Retroreflective Materials And Methods For Their Production And Use

US Patent:
4756931, Jul 12, 1988
Filed:
Jun 5, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/870807
Inventors:
John J. Giordano - Belleville NJ
Jeffrey P. Shawcross - Phillipsburg NJ
Alfred E. Fuchs - Denville NJ
Robert DeJaiffe - Oak Ridge NJ
Assignee:
Potters Industries, Inc. - Hasbrouck Heights NJ
International Classification:
B05D 506
US Classification:
427163
Abstract:
Retroreflective materials are made by coating glass particles with both hydrophobic polymers and coupling agents or with siloxane compounds which have both hydrophobic side chains and coupling-type side chains capable of chemically bonding to, or of forming loose associations with, a wide variety of materials.

Microbicidal Coated Beads

US Patent:
4682992, Jul 28, 1987
Filed:
Jun 25, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/624350
Inventors:
Alfred E. Fuchs - Denville NJ
Assignee:
Potters Industries, Inc. - Hasbrouck Heights NJ
International Classification:
B01D 1900
US Classification:
55279
Abstract:
Organosilicon quaternary ammonias and other microbicidal compounds are bound to the surface of discrete inorganic particles such as glass spheres. Inorganic particles coated with the microbicidal compounds are used in hospital fluidized beds, air filters, and other products in which microbicidal qualities are desired.

Dansyl Chloride Testing Method

US Patent:
4610966, Sep 9, 1986
Filed:
May 23, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/613593
Inventors:
Alfred E. Fuchs - Denville NJ
Assignee:
Potters Industries, Inc. - Hasbrouck Heights NJ
International Classification:
G01N 2178
US Classification:
436 2
Abstract:
A method of analyzing molecular layers of amino-functional group coupling agents on inorganic substrates is disclosed. A saturated solution of 1-dimethylaminonaphthalene-5-sulfonyl chloride is added to a sample to be tested, and sufficient time is allowed, with or without heating, for the reaction of the 1-dimethylaminonaphthalene-5-sulfonyl chloride with any amino functional group coupling agent which might be present. The color intensity of the reaction product is compared under ultraviolet light in an otherwise substantially dark room with the color intensity of standards representative of known thicknesses of coupling agent to determine the existence and thickness of the coupling agent on the particles being analyzed. If the reaction is allowed to progress without heating, rinsing will wash away some of the coating that is not sufficiently chemically bound to the substrate, and thus will decrease the amount of reaction product - of which the coating is a substituent - that can be observed on the substrate. The reduced reaction product is manifested by a reduced color intensity of the sample when viewed under ultraviolet light in a dark room.
