Methods And System For Identifying A Reference Region On An Image Of A Dropped-Out Form

US Patent:
6539112, Mar 25, 2003
Filed:
Feb 28, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/514671
Inventors:
Brent R. Smith - Redmond WA
Assignee:
RAF Technology, Inc. - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06K 900
US Classification:
382181, 382182
Abstract:
This invention relates to the field of optical character recognition for data in drop-out forms. In the absence of permanent, fixed landmarks, this invention uses the structure of the entered data to provide a landmark to be used in solving various problems encountered in automated processing of drop-out forms. An expected data pattern is located in a scanned image and compared to a defined data pattern in a template form that serves as a reference.

Rollup Functions For Efficient Storage Presentation And Analysis Of Data

US Patent:
6597809, Jul 22, 2003
Filed:
Mar 20, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/528749
Inventors:
David Justin Ross - Redmond WA
Stephen E. M. Billester - Bothell WA
Brent R. Smith - Redmond WA
Assignee:
RAF Technology, Inc. - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06K 972
US Classification:
382229, 382226, 382228, 382187, 704251, 715534
Abstract:
Methods of organizing a series of sibling data entities in a digital computer are provided for preserving sibling ranking information associated with the sibling data entities and for attaching the sibling ranking information to a joint parent of the sibling data entities to facilitate on-demand generation of ranked parent candidates. A rollup function of the present invention builds a rollup matrix ( ) that embodies information about the sibling entities and the sibling ranking information and provides a method for reading out the ranked parent candidates from the rollup matrix in order of their parent confidences ( ). Parent confidences are based on the sibling ranking information, either alone or in combination with n-gram dictionary ranking or other ranking information.

Secure, Limited-Access Database System And Method

US Patent:
6643648, Nov 4, 2003
Filed:
Jun 30, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/608806
Inventors:
David Justin Ross - Redmond WA
Jack Love - Bellevue WA
Stephen E. M. Billester - Bothell WA
Brent R. Smith - Redmond WA
Assignee:
RAF Technology, Inc. - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 1730
US Classification:
707 9, 707 10, 709101
Abstract:
A limited-access database system is designed for rapid access of data records with reduced memory storage requirements. The database system employs a set of obfuscated data records stored in data crystals that can only be accessed and read by an iterator, which is not directly accessible by the users of the database. The iterator accesses information responsive to a predefined query sent from a customer application. Rather than providing general tools to customers for constructing any possible queries, such as is done in structured query language database systems, database systems embodying the present invention allow only predefined types of queries to be used by customer applications. By restricting the types of queries customer applications can call, valuable data records remain secure from unauthorized reconstruction or duplication while still allowing limited access for specific purposes.

Content Personalization Based On Actions Performed During A Current Browsing Session

US Patent:
6853982, Feb 8, 2005
Filed:
Mar 29, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/821826
Inventors:
Brent R. Smith - Redmond WA, US
Gregory D. Linden - Seattle WA, US
Nida K. Zada - Ellicott City WA, US
Assignee:
Amazon.com, Inc. - Seattle WA
International Classification:
G06F017/60
US Classification:
705 27, 705 14, 705 26
Abstract:
Various methods are disclosed for monitoring user browsing activities, and for using such information to provide session-specific item recommendations to users. In one embodiment, a monitoring component of a merchant's Web site maintains a record of products viewed by each user during a current browsing session—preferably based on visits to product detail pages. A recommendations component uses the resulting history of viewed products to identify additional products to recommend, preferably using a pre-existing table that maps products to related products. In one embodiment, this table is generated by periodically analyzing user browsing histories to identify correlations between purchases, viewing events, and/or other actions performed with respect to particular products. The recommended items may be displayed together with an option to individually deselect the recently viewed items on which the recommendations are based. Embodiments are also disclosed that use recent browse node visits, and recent searches, to generate the recommendations.

Use Of Product Viewing Histories Of Users To Identify Related Products

US Patent:
6912505, Jun 28, 2005
Filed:
Mar 29, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/821712
Inventors:
Gregory D. Linden - Seattle WA, US
Brent R. Smith - Redmond WA, US
Nida K. Zada - Seattle WA, US
Assignee:
Amazon.com, Inc. - Seattle WA
International Classification:
G06F017/60
US Classification:
705 14, 705 26, 705 27
Abstract:
Various methods are disclosed for monitoring user browsing activities that indicate user interests in particular products or other items, and for using such information to identify items that are related to one another. In one embodiment, relationships between products within an online catalog are determined by identifying products that are frequently viewed by users within the same browsing session (e. g. , products A and B are related because a significant portion of those who viewed A also viewed B). The resulting item relatedness data is preferably stored in a table that maps items to sets of related items. The table may be used to provide personalized product recommendations to users, and/or to supplement product detail pages with lists of related products. In one embodiment, the table is used to provide session-specific product recommendations to users that are based on the products viewed by the user during the current browsing session.

Computer Processes And Systems For Adaptively Controlling The Display Of Items

US Patent:
7295995, Nov 13, 2007
Filed:
Oct 30, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/286430
Inventors:
Jeremy C. York - Seattle WA, US
Robert Cottrell - Seattle WA, US
Brent Smith - Seattle WA, US
Assignee:
A9.com, Inc. - Palo Alto CA
International Classification:
G06Q 30/00
US Classification:
705 26, 705 27, 707 1, 707 2, 707 3, 707 4, 707 5, 707 10
Abstract:
The invention comprises a computer-implemented system and method for refining the order and/or content of a list of items. In one embodiment, the amount of user activity associated with each item displayed to users in a given context is monitored, used is to generate context-specific item weights. The weights for the same item in different contexts may be different. The selection of items included in a list presented to users, as well as the order in which the items in the list are displayed, may be adjusted over time based upon the relative weights associated with the items. This allows the items generating the greatest user interest in a particular context to be presented to first, or otherwise emphasized.

Filed:
May 3, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/848608
Inventors:
Andrej Gregov - Seattle WA, US
Greg Linden - Seattle WA, US
Josh Petersen - Seattle WA, US
Brent Smith - Redmond WA, US
Jeremy Charles York - Bothell WA, US
Assignee:
Amazon.com, Inc. - Seattle WA
International Classification:
G06Q 30/00
US Classification:
705 26
Abstract:
A facility for presenting information about new items, such as new items available via a web site is described. The facility receives a request for information submitted on behalf of an identified user. In processing the request, the facility accesses a set of items having effective times. The facility performs a first filtering process to eliminate items of the set whose effective times indicate that the items are not new. The facility performs a second filtering process to eliminate items of the set in which the user likely has a low level of interest. Subsequent to both the first and second filterings, the facility presents to the user information about each of at least a portion of the filtered items.
