Finger Merge Protection For Rake Receivers

US Patent:
7194051, Mar 20, 2007
Filed:
Aug 30, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/233047
Inventors:
Tao Li - San Diego CA, US
Chandra Ramabhadra Murthy - La Jolla CA, US
Assignee:
Qualcomm Incorporated - San Diego CA
International Classification:
H04B 1/10
US Classification:
375349
Abstract:
Techniques to prevent fingers from merging. For each update command to adjust the timing of a particular “target” finger, a list of “candidate” fingers for which merging is to be prevented is determined. Detection for merging is then performed for each candidate finger, e. g. , one at a time. For each candidate finger, a comparison is performed using the position of the target finger, the position of the candidate finger, and a merge threshold. A determination is then made whether merging is detected for the candidate finger based on the comparison result. The update command may be disallowed for the target finger if merging is detected for any candidate finger, and may be allowed if merging is not detected for all candidate fingers. A “preferred” target finger may be allowed to be adjusted even if merging is detected for a non-preferred candidate finger, which may be moved instead.

Demodulating Encoded Data

US Patent:
2003011, Jun 19, 2003
Filed:
Nov 30, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/000817
Inventors:
Chandra Murthy - San Jose CA, US
Serguei Glazko - San Diego CA, US
Christopher Riddle - San Diego CA, US
Angelica Wong - San Francisco CA, US
International Classification:
H04L027/14
US Classification:
375/324000
Abstract:
The invention provides the ability to exploit redundancy characteristics of an equation set used to generate waveforms for wireless communication. In doing so, the invention can reduce the number of correlation values that need to be calculated in order to determine the most likely transmitted code word. In particular, the invention can exploit the redundancy characteristics of the equation set in a novel and unique fashion by separating the vector and calculating partial correlations for each separated portion of the vector. The techniques can drastically reduce the number of correlation values that need to be computed for demodulation, and can also reduce the total number of computations. In this manner, the demodulator of a wireless communication device can be simplified without negatively impacting performance.

Pilot Processing Architecture

US Patent:
2004012, Jul 1, 2004
Filed:
Oct 31, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/286043
Inventors:
Tao Li - San Diego CA, US
Chandra Murthy - La Jolla CA, US
International Classification:
H04B001/707
US Classification:
375/147000
Abstract:
A pilot signal processor is used to handle the Pilot Channel related processing. This is accomplished using dedicated hardware processing instead of with firmware in a DSP processor at the demodulation front end. Typically the DSP processor is much less power efficient than dedicated hardware, so by moving some tasks out of the firmware into dedicated hardware engine, the MIP requirement of the DSP processor and the overall power consumption will reduce. Further, moving these functions to a hardware processor results in improved system performance due to the reduced processing latency (hardware-hardware-hardware vs. hardware-firmware-hardware). The functions of the pilot signal processor include a pilot filter, odd pilot processing, RSSI lock detection, Nt_Io estimation, frequency tracking loop, and time tracking loop.
