Reversible Torque Back-Up Tong

US Patent:
7685910, Mar 30, 2010
Filed:
Mar 12, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/047196
Inventors:
Charles Robert Kennedy - Ventura CA, US
Assignee:
Westco International, Inc. - Ventura CA
International Classification:
B25B 17/00
US Classification:
81 5716, 81 5715, 81 5717, 81 5719
Abstract:
A back-up tong for assembling or disassembling threaded joints of tubing for use in oil and gas wells is provided. The back-up tong has both a first and second gripping mechanism. The first gripping mechanism has a plurality of jaws for engaging the tubing to prevent rotation of the tubing in a clockwise direction and the second gripping mechanism has a plurality of jaws for engaging the tubing to prevent rotation of the tubing in a counter-clockwise direction.

Read Amplifier Having Retriggerable, Variable Duty Cycle Inhibit Pulse Generator

US Patent:
3949394, Apr 6, 1976
Filed:
Apr 8, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/458895
Inventors:
Charles J. Kennedy - Pasadena CA
Assignee:
C. J. Kennedy Company - Altadena CA
International Classification:
H03K 500
G11B 509
US Classification:
340347DD
Abstract:
A read amplifier generates pulses in response to the transitions of a phase encoded signal and selectively gates the pulses to an output and to a retriggerable one shot multivibrator under the control of inhibit pulses produced by the multivibrator. During a preamble of the data signal in which a known sequence of zeros is produced, a decade counter prevents generation of pulses in response to the polarity return transitions between the zeros and prevents the inhibit pulses from being applied to gate the pulses produced by the data signal until a predetermined number of zero pulses has been counted. During the preamble the inhibit pulses at the output of the multivibrator are averaged and compared with a reference so as to adjust the duty cycle of the multivibrator to produce inhibit pulses which are 70 percent of the duration of the bit intervals of the data signal. Thereafter, the system is self-adjusting with the multivibrator responding to each pulse at the beginning of a bit interval to begin generation of an inhibit pulse and the averaging circuit being operative to adjust the multivibrator duty cycle as the bit intervals change so as to maintain the duration of the inhibit pulses at a selected ratio of the length of the bit intervals.

Magnetic Tape Cartridge Recorder Having Releasable Cartridge Catch Arrangement And Non-Resonant Type Drive

US Patent:
3976262, Aug 24, 1976
Filed:
Dec 17, 1973
Appl. No.:
5/425301
Inventors:
Charles J. Kennedy - Pasadena CA
Assignee:
C. J. Kennedy Company - Altadena CA
International Classification:
G03B 104
G11B 1532
US Classification:
242192
Abstract:
A recorder slidably receives the opposite edges of a magnetic tape cartridge within grooved guides and locks the cartridge in an operative position using an opposite pair of movable catches which engage notches in the opposite edges of the cartridge. Cartridge ejection is effected by energizing a solenoid which pulls the opposite catches out of the cartridge edge notches along enough for a pair of spring-loaded elements to push the cartridge forward out of the operative position. A wheel located within the cartridge and coupled to drive a length of magnetic tape therein is engaged with and driven by a drive wheel when the cartridge is in the operative position. The drive wheel is mounted on a drive shaft having an end thereof opposite the drive wheel rotatably supported by a bearing and an opposite portion thereof adjacent the drive wheel supported by another bearing which is resiliently mounted by a spring within an aperture at the top of the housing for the recorder. A motor mounted within the housing provides positive, non-resonant driving of the drive wheel via a bevelled wheel mounted on the motor shaft and having a resilient outer periphery thereof engaged with a second bevelled wheel mounted on the drive shaft adjacent the first-mentioned bearing.

Angular Position Transducer

US Patent:
3949339, Apr 6, 1976
Filed:
Nov 18, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/524635
Inventors:
Charles J. Kennedy - Pasadena CA
Assignee:
C. J. Kennedy Company - Altadena CA
International Classification:
H01F 2106
US Classification:
336135
Abstract:
An angular position transducer includes a core of magnetic material of circular shape and having a central hub extending from a central portion of and opposite outer rims extending from the outer periphery of a disk-shaped web. An armature which is of like size and shape to one half of the core so as to be semi-circular in configuration is mounted so as to undergo rotation relative to the core, the single outer rim of the armature being disposed adjacent one or the other or both of the outer rims of the core. A primary winding wrapped around the central hub of the core produces magnetic flux which flows into the armature, then through the single outer rim of the armature and adjacent portions of the outer rims of the core to a pair of secondary windings wound around the web of the core on opposite sides of the hub. The voltages induced in the two different secondary windings provide an indication of the angular position of the armature relative to the core, the algebraic sum of the voltages varying in generally linear fashion with changing angular positions of the armature relative to the core.
