Glass Breakage Detector

US Patent:
6351214, Feb 26, 2002
Filed:
Apr 9, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/829118
Inventors:
Kenneth G. Eskildsen - Bayside NY
Ying Xiong - Middleton WI
Christopher R. Paul - Bayport NY
John E. Foster - Huntington NY
Assignee:
Pittway Corp. - Chicago IL
International Classification:
G08B 1300
US Classification:
340550, 340566, 340541, 340426, 181 56, 181104
Abstract:
A method and a device for detecting the breakage of glass. A glass breakage detector that uses an acoustic transducer, an analog-to-digital converter, and a processing means which uses software algorithms to determine if a signal received by the acoustic transducer is a result of glass breaking. The glass breakage detector also uses amplifiers which have a greater gain response for higher frequency components in the received signal. The glass breakage detector is also able to correct the offset error generated by the amplifiers. The processing means or digital signal processor (DSP) uses a feature extraction software algorithm that extracts characteristics of the received sound using a plurality of filters centered at different frequencies and a rules analysis software algorithm to compare the extracted features to features from glass breakage and false alarms. The DSP is also capable of transmitting the extracted features to an external computing device for further analysis. The DSP may use different software routines which may be selected by a user to process the signal from the acoustic transducer.

System And Method For Power Delivery To Computing Terminals

US Patent:
7412610, Aug 12, 2008
Filed:
May 18, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/131811
Inventors:
Kenneth Rivalsi - Lake Grove NY, US
Christopher R. Paul - Bayport NY, US
Assignee:
Symbol Technologies, Inc. - Holtsville NY
International Classification:
G06F 1/26
US Classification:
713300, 379412
Abstract:
Described is a method wherein a computer terminal is coupled to a power supply through a docking arrangement. The docking arrangement includes a protection circuit. A current supplied to the computing terminal is detected. When the current is greater than a predetermined value, the computer terminal is decoupled from the power supply. After the computer terminal is decoupled from the power supply, the computer terminal is recoupled to the power supply, and the method repeats beginning with detecting the current supplied to the computing terminal.

User Interface For Rechargeable Batteries

US Patent:
8552877, Oct 8, 2013
Filed:
Sep 17, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/561921
Inventors:
Richard Martin - New Hyde Park NY, US
William Bang - Baiting Hollow NY, US
Mark Palmer - Bayshore NY, US
Christopher Paul - Bayport NY, US
Quintin Morris - Issaquah WA, US
Assignee:
Symbol Technologies, Inc. - Holtsville NY
International Classification:
G08B 21/00
US Classification:
34063619, 3406361, 34063615, 3408154, 34081558, 34081565, 320107, 320110, 320112, 320113
Abstract:
A rechargeable battery includes a housing having an external surface including a user interface region. A battery cell within the housing is characterized by a charging status, a state of charge, and a state of health. A processor disposed within the housing determines and/or stores the charging status as well as one or more of the state of charge and the state of health of the battery cell. The user interface region provides a plurality of visual components configured to provide a plurality of visual cues relating to the charging status, the state of charge, and the state of health of the battery cell. The plurality of visual components may include a persistent display, an on-demand display, and an input component. The input component may be used to select the manner in which the visual cues are provided.

Methods And Apparatus For Power Source Authentication

US Patent:
2007014, Jun 21, 2007
Filed:
Dec 15, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/303181
Inventors:
Joe Cabana - Centereach NY, US
Christopher Paul - Bayport NY, US
Kevin Cordes - Miller Place NY, US
International Classification:
G06F 11/00
US Classification:
726036000
Abstract:
A power source management system disposed within a device is configured to communicate with a power source and perform an authentication procedure to determine whether the power source is an approved power source. The authentication procedure may involve the use of a challenge-response procedure using keys resident in the device and the power source. If it is determined that the power source is not an approved power source, the power source management system prevents use of or disables certain functionality of the device.

Electronic Article Surveillance System

US Patent:
5825291, Oct 20, 1998
Filed:
Mar 25, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/827041
Inventors:
Victor Platt - Ronkonkoma NY
Christopher Reinard Paul - Bayport NY
Thomas A. Nicolette - Centerport NY
Peter Y. Zhou - Smithtown NY
Assignee:
Sentry Technology Corporation - Hauppauge NY
International Classification:
G08B 1314
US Classification:
340572
Abstract:
An electronic article surveillance system capable of reliable operation at high frequencies such as about 8 MHz, has an arrangement of transmitter and receiver antennas each lying in a flat, horizontal plane in substantial alignment with each other, with the receiver antenna positioned at the floor of a passageway at an interrogation zone and the transmitter antenna positioned overhead. Each antenna takes the form of a pair of parallel-connected, coplanar loops with the transmitter-connected loops being positioned such that electrical current flows around each loop in parallel in the same direction (a ++ configuration) and in the receiver antenna electrical current flows around each loop in parallel in mutually opposite directions (a +- configuration). The antennas are approximately of the same size and overall configuration, and they are positioned in substantial alignment so that the currents induced in the receiver antenna by the field from the transmitter antenna will effectively cancel. Current variations caused by the passage of a target through the interrogation zone will be greater in some of the conductors of the receiver antenna than in others and so can be detected.
