Differential Flow Control Valve

US Patent:
6405803, Jun 18, 2002
Filed:
Apr 14, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/549785
Inventors:
Richard Lee Giroux - Katy TX
Corey E. Hoffman - Magnolia TX
Assignee:
Weatherford/Lamb, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 3410
US Classification:
166374, 166319, 166321, 137 14, 137509
Abstract:
A downhole differential flow control valve is provided that utilizes a differential pressure area having one pressure area on which the wellbore pressure acts and a second area different from the first area on which pressure in the tubing acts. The differential area reduces the load in which the spring is required to exert a closing force in the valve. Thus, a coil spring can be used to improve the closing speeds of the valve.

Jun 30, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/608077
Inventors:
William A. Grubb - Houston TX
David M. Haugen - League City TX
Corey E. Hoffman - Magnolia TX
Assignee:
Weatherford/Lamb, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 4316
US Classification:
1663051, 4174101
Abstract:
An isolation container designed for use with a downhole electric pump assembly commonly used in oil and gas drilling and production operations is disclosed. The isolation container has an annular housing with an axial inlet and outlet bore. A downhole electric pump assembly is centrally located within the pressure isolation container. The downhole electric pump assembly includes an electric pump positioned above and coupled to a motor seal section which is positioned above and coupled to a centrifugal pump, thereby providing a means to power the centrifugal pump. A blind coupling is positioned above the electric motor with a tubular member connected thereto and extending through the inlet of the isolation container. The tubular member connects to a tubing string supplying fluid from the surface. The blind coupling has a plurality of radially disposed ports to allow pressurized fluid from the surface to flow into the annulus between the downhole electric pump and the isolation container.

Method For Installing An Expandable Coiled Tubing Patch

US Patent:
6668930, Dec 30, 2003
Filed:
Mar 26, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/106178
Inventors:
Corey E. Hoffman - Magnolia TX
Assignee:
Weatherford/Lamb, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 2900
US Classification:
166298, 166380, 166297, 166207, 166 558
Abstract:
The present invention provides methods for expanding coiled tubing within a wellbore in order to form a patch. In one aspect, an expansion assembly is run into the wellbore at the lower end of a string of coiled tubing. The expansion assembly includes a cutting tool and an expander tool. The coiled tubing is run into the wellbore such that the expander tool is adjacent a portion of surrounding casing or other tubular body to be patched. The expander tool is actuated so as to expand a selected portion of the coiled tubing into frictional engagement with the surrounding casing, thereby forming a patch within the wellbore. The cutting tool is actuated so as to sever the coiled tubing downhole above the patch. The severed coiled tubing is then pulled, thereby removing the expansion assembly from the wellbore as well.

Fracturing Port Collar For Wellbore Pack-Off System, And Method For Using Same

US Patent:
6695057, Feb 24, 2004
Filed:
Feb 11, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/073685
Inventors:
Gary D. Ingram - Richmond TX
Corey E. Hoffman - Magnolia TX
Richard L. Giroux - Cypress TX
Assignee:
Weatherford/Lamb, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 4325
US Classification:
166308, 166185
Abstract:
A collar for injecting fluid, such as a formation treating fluid, into a wellbore, and a method for using same. The collar is disposed between the upper and lower packing elements of a pack-off system during the treatment of an area of interest within a wellbore. The collar first comprises an inner mandrel running essentially the length of the collar. The inner bore of the collar is in fluid communication with the annular region between the collar and the surrounding perforated casing by a set of actuation ports. A second set of ports, known as frac ports, is disposed within the mandrel. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, the collar further comprises a tubular case which substantially seals the frac ports in a first position, and slidably moves along the outer surface of the mandrel in order to expose the frac ports in a second position. In operation, the upper and lower packing elements are set at a first fluid pressure level. Upon application of a second greater fluid pressure level, the upper and lower packing elements are further separated in accordance with a designed stroke length, thereby exposing the frac ports.
