Lithium Extraction Through Pulsed Electrochemical Intercalation Method

US Patent:
2023007, Mar 9, 2023
Filed:
Sep 15, 2022
Appl. No.:
17/945759
Inventors:
- Stanford CA, US
Steven Chu - Menlo Park CA, US
Chong Liu - Chicago IL, US
Assignee:
The Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior University - Stanford CA
International Classification:
C25C 1/22
C25C 7/02
Abstract:
Electrochemical methods using intercalation chemistry to extract Li from seawater using the TiO2-coated FePO4 electrode. The difference in the thermodynamic intercalation potentials, as well as the diffusion barriers between Li and Na, could provide near 100% selectivity towards Li interaction when Li/Na molar ratio is higher than 10-3. For lower Li/Na ratio as in the authentic seawater case, pulsed-rest and pulse-rest-reverse pulse-rest electrochemical methods were developed to lower the intercalation overpotential and it was proven to successfully boost the Li selectivity. Moreover, the pulse-rest-reverse pulse-rest method can also promote electrode crystal structure stability during the co-intercalation of Li and Na and prolong the lifetime of the electrode. Finally, 10 cycles of successful and stable Li extraction with 1:1 of Li to Na recovery from authentic seawater were demonstrated, which is equivalent to the selectivity of 1.8×104. Also, with lake water of higher initial Li/Na ratio of 1.6×10-3, Li extraction with more than 50:1 of Li to Na recovery was achieved.

Remediation Of Heavy Metal Contaminated Soil By Asymmetrical Alternating Current Electrochemistry

US Patent:
2020032, Oct 15, 2020
Filed:
Apr 8, 2020
Appl. No.:
16/843693
Inventors:
- Stanford CA, US
Jinwei Xu - Menlo Park CA, US
Chong Liu - Chicago IL, US
International Classification:
B09C 1/08
B09C 1/02
Abstract:
Soil contamination by heavy metals constitutes an important environmental problem, whereas field applicability of existing remediation technologies has encountered numerous obstacles, such as long operation time, high chemical cost, large energy consumption, secondary pollution, and soil degradation. A design and demonstration of a method is provided which is based on asymmetrical alternating current electrochemistry (AACE) that achieves high degrees of contaminant removal for different heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Cd) at different initial concentrations (from 100 to 10,000 ppm), all reaching corresponding regulation levels for residential scenario after rational treatment time (from 30 min to 6 h). No excessive nutrient loss in treated soil was observed and no secondary toxic product was produced. Long-term experiment and plant assay showed the high sustainability of the method and its feasibility for agricultural use.
