Roll Grinder

US Patent:
5402606, Apr 4, 1995
Filed:
Mar 4, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/206863
Inventors:
Dale E. Helgren - Green Bay WI
Assignee:
Voith Sulzer Paper Technology North America, Inc. - Appleton WI
International Classification:
B24B 100
US Classification:
451184
Abstract:
A dual roll grinder employs a first and second work station including a dual drive headstock disposed therebetween. A grinding assembly and the dual drive headstock translatably move along a bed to engage rolls in either of the two stations. This permits unloading and loading of a new roll in the station not currently active.

Real Time Straightness Deviation Measuring And Compensation Device For Machine Tools

US Patent:
5245264, Sep 14, 1993
Filed:
Mar 24, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/856484
Inventors:
Dale E. Helgren - Green Bay WI
Thomas J. Doyle - Winneconne WI
Assignee:
J. M. Voith, GmbH - Heidenheim
International Classification:
G05B 1937
G05B 1941
US Classification:
31856822
Abstract:
A real time straightness deviation measuring and compensation device for a machine tool that automatically and continuously compensates for bed way deviation from a truly straight line relative to a workpiece. A wire, parallel to the workpiece or axis of workpiece rotation and perpendicular to the direction of machine tool compensation is utilized as a straightness reference, with the wire being stretched in the direction of machine tool carriage travel and supported on either end by weights for gravity induced straightness. A position indication device, such as a laser micrometer, is attached to the machine tool carriage and positioned around the reference wire in order to read the position of the wire relative to the machine tool carriage during real time operation. An electronically controlled servo motor attached to a machine tool supported on the carriage automatically adjusts the machine tool to compensate for carriage deviation caused by bed way deviation relative to the straight reference wire.

Roll Grinder With Vibration Dampening

US Patent:
6200204, Mar 13, 2001
Filed:
Sep 17, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/399274
Inventors:
Dale Helgren - Green Bay WI
Assignee:
Voith Sulzer Paper Technology North America, Inc. - Appleton WI
International Classification:
B24B 700
US Classification:
451124
Abstract:
A roll grinder system including a roll grinder bed of high dynamic stiffness, having a roll support and a grinding wheel support fixedly mounted to the roll grinder bed. The roll grinder bed is comprised of a monolithic epoxy granite block with a steel plate embedded in the top surface and a steel plate embedded in the bottom surface. The bed for the support for the roll being ground is rigidly affixed to the top plate. The bed for the traversing carriage of the grinding wheel head is also rigidly affixed to the top plate. A bed for the caliper is affixed to a lateral side of the block. The grinding wheel and the caliper traverse along the axis of the roll being ground. Vibration isolators are disposed below the bottom plate of the block.

Caliper Assembly For Grinder

US Patent:
5551906, Sep 3, 1996
Filed:
Nov 23, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/344095
Inventors:
Dale Helgren - Green Bay WI
Assignee:
Voith Sulzer Paper Technology North America Inc. - Appleton WI
International Classification:
B24B 4900
US Classification:
451 8
Abstract:
A caliper assembly for a grinding apparatus includes a pair of spaced apart, moveable, caliper arms for measuring a dimension of a workpiece held in the grinding apparatus. The caliper arms are independently movable. Each has a dimension measuring probe for contacting a workpiece surface and measuring a dimension of the workpiece. An inspecting device located at an end of one caliper arm for inspecting characteristics of the workpiece surface is supported spaced from the dimension measuring probe and so that the surface inspecting device is located at a desired, fixed distance from the workpiece surface when the dimension measuring probe contacts the workpiece surface. The surface inspecting device is movably adjusted in accordance with the adjustments of the caliper arm so that the surface inspecting device is accurately located at a constant distance from the surface of the workpiece. In one embodiment, the inspecting device is on the inward facing surface of one of the caliper arms. In another embodiment, the inspecting device is on the outward facing surface of one of the caliper arms.

Roll Grinding System For A Roll

US Patent:
6257964, Jul 10, 2001
Filed:
Nov 1, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/431356
Inventors:
Dale E. Helgren - Green Bay WI
Assignee:
Voith Sulzer Paper Technology North America, Inc. - Appleton WI
International Classification:
B24B 100
US Classification:
451 49
Abstract:
A roll grinding system includes a roll with a pair of longitudinally opposite ends, a longitudinal axis extending between the ends, and an outer surface. A material removal tool is movable in a travel path along a length of the roll. The material removal tool has a generally flat working surface oriented generally parallel to the travel path. A longitudinal displacement drive is connected with the material removal tool for moving the material removal tool along the travel path. A pair of supports are respectively positioned at and rotatably carry a corresponding end of the roll. At least one transverse displacement drive is provided, with each transverse displacement drive being connected with a corresponding support and configured to move the corresponding support in directions generally toward and away from the longitudinal axis. A controller is coupled with and controls operation of each transverse displacement drive, dependent upon a position of the material removal tool along the travel path whereby the outer surface of the roll is positioned substantially tangent to the working surface of the material removal tool.
