Railroad Grade Crossing Motorist Warning System

US Patent:
4942395, Jul 17, 1990
Filed:
Aug 24, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/088579

A three-piece, compact wireless railroad grade crossing motorist warning device comprising: a locomotive mounted transceiver which simultaneously communicates (upon close proximity) with a similar transceiver mounted at railroad grade crossing, and motor vehicles equipped with sympathetic receivers. Upon signal receipt verification, the grade crossing transceiver emits a coded radio signal to local motoring public sympathetic receivers. Upon signal reception, an audio/visual alert is presented to the motor vehicle operator, alerting the motor vehicle operator to the locomotive-occupied railroad crossing. Additionally, a contact verification display is displayed to the operator of the locomotive, upon activation of the grade site transceiver.

Solar Electric Generator

US Patent:
4353003, Oct 5, 1982
Filed:
Nov 17, 1980
Appl. No.:
6/207376
Inventors:
Dale Sommers - Englewood CO
International Classification:
H02K 4500
US Classification:
310306
Abstract:
A solar electric generator is provided wherein a plurality of propellers are mounted transversely to a shaft journaled on bearings in a housing. Each propeller includes a plurality of equiangularly spaced arms with each arm terminating in a vane member which is coated with a light absorbing medium. The housing is provided with a transparent window so that sunlight may fall on the coated side of the vanes as they rotate with the shaft mounted in the housing. The shaft is connected to a suitable electric generator such that rotation of the shaft is converted into electrical energy by the generator. A focusing system is provided to direct light along different paths to strike the absorbing surface of the vanes as they rotate about the shaft and a tracking mechanism is operative to track the sun both daily and seasonally.

Ultra-Miniature Collapsible Butane Fueled Mantle Lantern

US Patent:
4702690, Oct 27, 1987
Filed:
Jul 21, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/887534
Inventors:
Dale C. Sommers - Englewood CO
Frank L. Hibberd - Denver CO
Doreen M. Jayko - Denver CO
International Classification:
F21H 700
US Classification:
131110
Abstract:
Disclosed is an improved, ultra-compact, piezoelectric spark start, butane fueled, incandescent mantle type lantern for backpackers and the like, which utilizes readily available, common disposable butane cigarette lighters as an insertable and removable "fuel cell". Illumination intensity is operator controlled at the fuel cell flame adjustment control. Piezo sparking is sequenced with push-button movement of the butane lighter gas release lever, for convenient and controlled gas discharge. The lantern base portion is retractable on upright posts, into the globe (upper assembly) once the "fuel cell" is removed from the base guide, and the combination piezoelectric element and fuel cell receiver. Once removed from the receiver integral to the lantern, the "fuel cell" again may be used as a conventional cigarette lighter. A perforated, sleeve-type, sliding cylindrical shroud is located at the top of the present design, and is moveable vertically, so as to protect the globe during transport, and a wire handle is located thereupon, which folds under the base of the lantern in the collapsed mode, for convenient packaging and transport.
