Abstract:
A method for laser marking a substrate which method comprises exposing a composition comprising a tetrabenzodiazadiketoperylene pigment to laser radiation to produce a fluorescent marking readily apparent under UV light is disclosed. Many of the tetrabenzodiazadiketoperylenes herein are novel. This method can yield fluorescent markings which are not readily apparent under ambient light. A method for producing non-fluorescent laser marked substrates containing tetrabenzodiazadiketoperylene dyes is also disclosed.

Low-Dust Additive And Pigment Blends With Improved Color

US Patent:
7789957, Sep 7, 2010
Filed:
Feb 15, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/070202
Inventors:
John Adams - The Woodlands TX, US
Roger Reinicker - Hockessin DE, US
Damien Thurber Cole - Drexel Hill PA, US
Gerard Finnegan - Wilmington DE, US
Assignee:
Ciba Corporation - Tarrytown NY
International Classification:
C08K 5/05
C08K 5/105
US Classification:
106493, 106499, 524236, 524379
Abstract:
Solid, low dust pigment compositions are formed i by mixing pigments with certain polymer stabilizers under conditions wherein the stabilizers are in a liquefied state. The pigment compositions are easily handled and have a high color yield when incorporated into polymer substrates. In many cases, the color development attained is not readily achievable using pigment compositions comprising conventional carriers.

Abstract:
A method for producing fluorescent markings on a substrate which method comprises exposing a composition comprising a polymer and an organic pigment to a heat source, such as laser radiation, to produce a fluorescent markings which are not discernable when viewed under ambient visible light but readily apparent under UV light is disclosed. The method produces novel compositions wherein a fluorescent form of a pigment is present at a higher concentration in defined domains relative to the remainder of the composition. The novel polymer composition is particularly useful in security marking applications.

Process For The Preparation Of Dialkyl Succinylsuccinates

US Patent:
5783723, Jul 21, 1998
Filed:
Sep 24, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/719044
Inventors:
Colin Dennis Campbell - Claymont DE
Damien Thurber Cole - Upper Darby PA
Harold Raymond Taylor - Wilmington DE
Assignee:
Ciba Specialty Chemicals Corporation - Tarrytown NY
International Classification:
C07C22900
C07C 6974
C07D22118
US Classification:
560 48
Abstract:
Dialkyl succinylsuccinates are prepared in a pure form and in high yield by reacting an alkali metal alcoholate with an excess of dialkyl succinate under anhydrous conditions followed by isolation of the di(alkali metal) salt of the dialkyl succinylsuccinate and then neutralization of the salt with acid. The resulting dialkyl succinylsuccinate is isolated or used without isolation as an intermediate in the production of quinacridone pigments. The disclosed process provides for high yields and reduced organic waste compared with known processes.
