High Precision Cartesian Robot For A Planar Scanner

US Patent:
6545440, Apr 8, 2003
Filed:
Jun 4, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/873907
Inventors:
Dan Slater - La Habra Heights CA
Frank R. Mitchell - South Pasadena CA
Assignee:
Nearfield Systems, Inc. - Carson CA
International Classification:
G05B 1910
US Classification:
318567, 31856811, 901 16, 414749
Abstract:
A Cartesian robot comprises a base member disposed along an x-axis, a transverse member moveably mounted to the base member, and disposed along a y-axis transverse to the x-axis. The robot has a y-carriage for a measurement probe moveably mounted to the transverse member along the y-axis. The x, y, and z axes define a Cartesian coordinate system. The robot includes an innovative structure that achieves high precision with respect to the z-axis by providing a planarized and stable reference surface along the y-axis (vertical axis). The position of the y-carriage with respect to a z-axis is a predictable function of the measured position of the y-carriage on the reference surface, and rigid-body tilt of the reference surface. High accuracy and precision are achieved by utilizing a granite slab for providing the planarized reference surface disposed along the y-axis for the transverse member. The granite slab is supported by a structural frame, and a measurement probe may be mounted to a y-carriage which is moveably mounted to the reference surface of the granite slab.

Time Space Coherence Interferometer

US Patent:
2013029, Nov 7, 2013
Filed:
Apr 30, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/874249
Inventors:
Dan SLATER - La Habra Heights CA, US
International Classification:
H04J 3/14
US Classification:
370252
Abstract:
A time space coherence interferometer (TSCI) system is provided. In one embodiment of the present invention the TSCI system includes an interferometer in communication with an RF source and a receiver. The interferometer includes a first switch, a second switch, a transmit element, a receive element and a sequencer circuit, wherein the sequencer circuit is configured to alternate the first and second switches between first and second configurations. In a first configuration, the signal from the RF source is provided to the transmit element, where it is communicated to the receive element via a signal path, and provided to the receiver. In the second configuration, the signal from the RF source is provided to the receiver via a reference path. The switching sequence results in a complex ratio of the signal path signal to the reference path signal (e.g., an S21 transmission ratio) being provided to the receiver.

Wide Range Straightness Measuring Stem Using A Polarized Multiplexed Interferometer And Centered Shift Measurement Of Beam Polarization Components

US Patent:
5408318, Apr 18, 1995
Filed:
Aug 2, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/101226
Inventors:
Dan Slater - La Habra Heights CA
Assignee:
Nearfield Systems Incorporated - Carson CA
International Classification:
G01B 902
US Classification:
356351
Abstract:
A wide range straightness measuring system of the present invention accurately determines lateral and angular displacement of a probe carriage of a cartesian robot. The system includes a laser aligned with an x-axis rail of the cartesian robot system which generates a laser beam having two polarization components. A pentaprism beamsplitter is disposed on an x-axis carriage aligned with the laser. The beamsplitter orthogonally splits the laser beam into an x-axis reference beam and a y-axis reference beam. An x-axis interferometer receives the x-axis reference beam and determines a relative position value of the probe carriage measured along the x-axis. A y-axis interferometer receives the y-axis reference beam and determines a relative position value for the probe carriage measured along the y-axis. A beam monitor receives a polarized multiplexed output of the y-axis interferometer and monitors the lateral shift of the energy centroids of the beam polarization components. Both lateral and angular displacement values of the x and y-axis reference beams can be obtained by measuring the magnitude of the lateral shift.

System For Creating A Servo Control Signal

US Patent:
4245298, Jan 13, 1981
Filed:
Jan 15, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/003742
Inventors:
Dan Slater - La Habra CA
Assignee:
Magicam, Inc. - Hollywood CA
International Classification:
G06F 1546
US Classification:
364118
Abstract:
A system for creating a control reference signal for a remote electrical servo device having a movable output unit wherein the velocity and position of the output unit are controlled by the vector magnitude of the control reference signal. This system includes a digital circuit for creating a first fixed analog signal indicative of a known or desired velocity for the unit during a preselected controlled time interval and a second digital means for creating a desired time base positional profile during the preselected time interval. An encoder arrangement is employed for detecting the actual time base positional profile of the servo output unit during the given time interval so that an analog signal generally proportional to the algebraic difference between the actual and desired time base positional digital profile can be created at various times during the time interval. The control reference signal is then created by a summing circuit as a function of both the first and second analog signals the first of which is proportional to a desired velocity and the second of which is proportional to the algebraic difference between a desired and actual position of the servo output unit.

Foreground Stabilization System For Use In Composite Photography

US Patent:
4169666, Oct 2, 1979
Filed:
Jan 23, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/871757
Inventors:
Dan Slater - La Habra CA
John C. Gale - Hollywood CA
Joseph L. Matza - Malibu CA
Assignee:
Magicam, Inc. - Hollywood CA
International Classification:
G03B 2132
US Classification:
352 85
Abstract:
In a composite photography system of the type wherein a foreground camera photographs life-size actors and objects while a background camera photographs scenery on a life-size scale or a scale different from life-size so that when the outputs from both cameras are combined the actor or foreground objects will appear to be located in the scenery filmed by the background camera, it is crucial that the motion of the background camera be slaved to the motion of the foreground camera. The foreground camera is mounted on a yaw and pitch support mechanism which is in turn mounted on a boom that provides movement along the z axis. The boom is carried by a dolly that moves the entire assembly in the x-y plane. Sensors on the dolly detect movement along the five axes of x, y, z, yaw and pitch, and cause the background camera to move its corresponding amount. These sensors, however, do not detect dolly rotation about its vertical, or z, axis which is perpendicular to the stage floor, or x-y plane, on which the dolly moves.

Dual Beam Laser Device For Linear And Planar Alignment

US Patent:
6034763, Mar 7, 2000
Filed:
Oct 13, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/170626
Inventors:
Dan Slater - La Habra Heights CA
David M. Kramer - Palos Verdes CA
Assignee:
Nearfield Systems Incorporated - Carson CA
International Classification:
G01B 1126
US Classification:
356138
Abstract:
A high precision alignment apparatus is provided that utilizes a semiconductor laser device, such as a laser diode, to provide a source laser beam. The alignment apparatus permits the division of a pair of beam components from the source laser beam useful for either linear or planar alignment. A centroid measurement between the beam components provides a corrected reference point that accounts for the inherent instability of the source laser beam to yield a high level of alignment accuracy. For linear alignment purposes, the beam components are collinearly directed. In the alternative, for planar alignment purposes, the beam components may be either collinear or directed in opposite directions, and rotated to sweep respective planar regions. The laser alignment apparatus is capable of providing a level of accuracy heretofore achievable only with gas lasers, while maintaining the economical attributes of commercial semiconductor laser diodes.
