Methods For Using A Fluid Stream To Test A Honeycomb Body

US Patent:
8051703, Nov 8, 2011
Filed:
Feb 27, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/394129
Inventors:
David Lewin Poff - Pilot VA, US
Darin Wayne Felty - Elliston VA, US
John W Mikels - Riner VA, US
Robert A Smith - Riner VA, US
Assignee:
Corning Incorporated - Corning NY
International Classification:
G01M 3/02
G01N 19/04
US Classification:
73 37, 73150 A
Abstract:
Methods are provided for testing a honeycomb body comprised of a core portion comprising honeycomb cell walls and a circumferential skin portion overlying at least some outer honeycomb cell walls. The circumferential skin portion includes a cement mixture layer. The method comprises the step of directing a fluid stream from a pressurized fluid source at the honeycomb body. The fluid stream is capable of separating at least part of the skin portion from the outer honeycomb cell walls when the adherence between at least part of the skin portion and the outer honeycomb cell walls is below a minimum threshold. In one example, the method further comprises the step of inspecting at least part of the interface between the honeycomb body and the skin portion during or after directing the fluid stream at the honeycomb body. In further examples, an apparatus is provided for testing the honeycomb body.

Method And Apparatus For Extruding Honeycomb Articles And Thick-Skinned Ceramic Honeycomb Articles Manufactured Thereby

US Patent:
2007002, Feb 1, 2007
Filed:
Jul 28, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/494914
Inventors:
Dana Bookbinder - Corning NY, US

International Classification:
B32B 3/00
B29C 47/12
US Classification:
428073000, 264177120, 425113000
Abstract:
Disclosed is a method and apparatus for forming a circumferential skin surrounding a central cellular structure of an extruded honeycomb article. The method and apparatus may be used to produce defect-free skins and/or skins having large thickness and a high degree of particle alignment thereby preferably exhibiting CTE comparable to the extruded webs. These benefits are achieved by providing a die and method wherein a flow, Q, exiting any two active ones of a plurality of peripheral slots forming the skin is substantially equal. Also disclosed is a thick-skinned ceramic article having a thick extruded skin (t>5 t) with an I-value comparable to the webs.

Extrusion Components For Honeycomb Bodies

US Patent:
2019003, Jan 31, 2019
Filed:
Feb 13, 2017
Appl. No.:
16/077122
Inventors:
- Corning NY, US
Thomas William Brew - Corning NY, US
Darin Wayne Felty - Elliston VA, US
Tushar Gulati - Painted Post NY, US
Min Shen - Horesheads NY, US
Mark Allen Spetseris - Pine City NY, US
Eric Lee Thompson - Livonia NY, US
International Classification:
B28B 3/26
Abstract:
A honeycomb extrusion die assembly () comprising a honeycomb extrusion die () and a forming plate () to block batch flow to at least a portion of a skin forming region. The honeycomb extrusion die () comprising a step cut discharge surface () in the skin forming region and at least some slots () each with a divot () spaced toward a discharge surface () from a feedhole-slot intersection and a wide portion at the discharge surface () extending into the die body to the divot () to strengthen a peripheral region of a honeycomb extrudate in a reinforcement region, and a bulk nominal section corresponding to a bulk region of the honeycomb body.
