Generating A Debuggable Dump File For An Operating System Kernel And Hypervisor

US Patent:
2011022, Sep 15, 2011
Filed:
Mar 9, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/720460
Inventors:
YUE ZUO - REDMOND WA, US
FRANCIS MANOJ DAVID - BELLEVUE WA, US
YIMIN DENG - SAMMAMISH WA, US
FORREST CURTIS FOLTZ - REDMOND WA, US
Assignee:
MICROSOFT CORPORATION - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 11/36
G06F 9/455
US Classification:
714 37, 718 1, 714E11208
Abstract:
Cloud computing platforms having computer-readable media that perform methods to generate debuggable dump files are provided. The cloud computing platform includes server devices running operating system kernels. Optionally, the server may include a hypervisor. The operating system kernel receives a command to generate a debuggable dump file. In response, the operating system estimates memory requires to store the requested memory pages, allocates an appropriately sized buffer, and freezes computation. A hypervisor is present and if its memory pages are requested, the hypervisor freezes its computation. The hypervisor stores its memory pages in the buffer and resumes computation. The operating system kernel stores its pages to the buffer in priority order and resumes its computation. The contents of the buffer are written out as a debuggable dump file.

Generating A Debuggable Dump File For A Virtual Machine

US Patent:
2011022, Sep 15, 2011
Filed:
Mar 9, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/720474
Inventors:
THOMAS FAHRIG - REDMOND WA, US
YUE ZUO - REDMOND WA, US
FRANCIS MANOJ DAVID - BELLEVUE WA, US
YIMIN DENG - SAMMAMISH WA, US
FORREST CURTIS FOLTZ - REDMOND WA, US
Assignee:
MICROSOFT CORPORATION - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 11/36
G06F 9/455
US Classification:
714 37, 718 1, 714E11208
Abstract:
Cloud computing platforms having computer-readable media that perform methods to generate debuggable dump files are provided. The cloud computing platform includes at least one server having a host virtual machine, guest virtual machine, and hypervisor. The host virtual machine receives a command to generate the debuggable dump file. In response, it suspends all virtual processors executing on the guest virtual machine. The memory pages of the suspended virtual machine are written into a debuggable dump file, and the suspended processors are resumed at an appropriate time.

Mitigation Of Impact Of Intermittent Storage Unavailability On Virtual Machines

US Patent:
2017002, Jan 26, 2017
Filed:
Jul 22, 2015
Appl. No.:
14/805800
Inventors:
- Redmond WA, US
Suraj Puri - Redmond WA, US
Raghu Murthy - Redmond WA, US
Kai Chen - Bellevue WA, US
Francis M. David - Bellevue WA, US
Melur Raghuraman - Sammamish WA, US
Mian Naeem ul Haque - Bothell WA, US
Saad Syed - Redmond WA, US
International Classification:
G06F 9/455
Abstract:
A virtual machine hosting environment executing on a physical machine is operable to instantiate a virtual machine that is capable of initiating I/O operations directed to a remote storage. The virtual machine hosting environment is operable to determine when an unavailability condition exists with respect to the remote storage and when such unavailability condition no longer exists. The virtual machine hosting environment is further operable to suspend the virtual machine based at least on the determination that the unavailability condition exists and to resume the virtual machine based at least on the determination that the unavailability condition no longer exists. The virtual machine hosting environment may be still further operable to save one or more pending I/O requests generated by the virtual machine in conjunction with pausing the virtual machine and to send the pending I/O request(s) to the remote storage in conjunction with resuming the virtual machine.
