Drive Shaft Damper

US Patent:
5976021, Nov 2, 1999
Filed:
Jul 14, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/892146
Inventors:
Martin H. Stark - Saginaw MI
Gary A. Conger - Hemlock MI
Donald S. Agnew - Saginaw MI
Donald W. Brewster - Bay City MI
David A. Galonska - Saginaw MI
Assignee:
Arrow Paper Products, Co. - Saginaw MI
International Classification:
F16C 300
US Classification:
464180
Abstract:
A vibration and noise attenuating damper for an automotive drive shaft has a cylindrical body of such size as snugly to fit within the shaft between its reduced diameter ends and be retained in fixed position. The damper has at each end thereof a seal which bears against the surface of the bore of the shaft. The seal has a wall which is accommodated within the tubular body of the damper. The seal may include an impervious closure which closes the end of the damper. The inner surface of the tubular damper body may be formed of a waterproof material.

Power Steering Gear With Piston Nut And Screw Operatively Connected By Centralizing Root Diameter Thread

US Patent:
4036110, Jul 19, 1977
Filed:
Nov 14, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/631838
Inventors:
David A. Galonska - Saginaw MI
James B. McCarthy - Saginaw MI
Joseph A. Rutkiewicz - Saginaw MI
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
F15B 910
F15B 1310
US Classification:
91375A
Abstract:
This power steering gear comprises a piston nut movably mounted in a housing for turning a gear sector and the steerable wheels of a vehicle operatively connected thereto. The piston nut is mechanically moved by a rotatable screw, threadedly engaged with the piston nut and operatively connected to an input stub shaft. Hydraulic power assist is provided with the piston nut forming separate expansible and contractible chambers filled with hydraulic fluid and controlled by integral valve means in the gear. The threads of the piston nut and screw are profiled to contact at their minor diameters to increase thread efficiency by reducing the friction radius. The threads of the piston nut are made with optimized thickness to reduce flank clearance to further restrict the hydraulic flow path through the thread to effectively seal the chambers from each other.

Tube Cutting Apparatus And Methods

US Patent:
5014579, May 14, 1991
Filed:
Feb 27, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/315935
Inventors:
David A. Galonska - Saginaw MI
Assignee:
Arrow Paper Products Company - Saginaw MI
International Classification:
B23B 100
US Classification:
82 47
Abstract:
A tube supported on a rotating mandrel is cut by a pair of cutter blades spaced apart a distance corresponding substantially to the diameter of the mandrel and which are moved simultaneously in a direction toward the mandrel and transversely of its axis of rotation a distance sufficient to enable the cutters to engage the tube at circumferentially spaced zones and sever the wall of the tube. The cutters move along a path that is tangential, rather than radial, relative to the mandrel.

Vibration Damping Shaft Liner

US Patent:
5924531, Jul 20, 1999
Filed:
Sep 26, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/721550
Inventors:
Martin H. Stark - Saginaw MI
David A. Galonska - Saginaw MI
International Classification:
F16C 100
US Classification:
188372
Abstract:
A vibration damping liner for insertion in the bore of a cylindrical shaft has a cylindrical core the exterior of which is corrugated and defined by alternating grooves and upstanding flutes. The liner has an undeformed flute diameter greater than that of the bore. All of the flutes are deformed prior to insertion of the liner into the cylindrical shaft laterally of their length and in the same direction to produce a liner having a deformed flute diameter less than the undeformed flute diameter, but still greater than the diameter of the bore. As the liner is inserted in the bore, the deformed flutes may deform further radially inwardly, but once the liner is in the shaft the flutes expand into engagement with the surface of the bore. The flutes have thereon a coating of material having a coefficient of friction greater than that of the flute-forming material.
