Abstract:
A target wheel for providing timing information for a crankshaft in an internal combustion engine, the target wheel comprising a substantially circular member having a plurality of teeth, the teeth having variable widths, and the teeth having rising edges distributed in a non-uniform fashion and falling edges distributed in a uniform fashion, where the target wheel provides speed and timing information for multiple internal combustion engine configurations.

Methods And Apparatus For Sensing Misfire In An Internal Combustion Engine

US Patent:
6801848, Oct 5, 2004
Filed:
Jun 25, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/602376
Inventors:
David S. Mathews - Howell MI
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
G01M 1500
US Classification:
701111, 701114, 12340614
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus are provided for sensing a misfire in an engine having at least one cylinder and for providing a misfire indication signal in response to the occurrence of the misfire. The apparatus comprises an electronic controller that calculates an expected time period for a cylinder event during which fuel is combusted in a cylinder to provide an expected time period value. The time period of the cylinder event is measured to provide a measured time period value. The difference between the expected time period value and the measured time period value is calculated to provide a difference time period value. The difference time period value is compared to a predetermined threshold time. The misfire indication signal is provided in response to the difference time period value exceeding the predetermined threshold time.

Idle Speed Control Using Alternator

US Patent:
7036484, May 2, 2006
Filed:
Apr 16, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/414702
Inventors:
David S. Mathews - Howell MI, US
Nick S. Kapsokavathis - Shelby Township MI, US
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
F02D 41/16
US Classification:
12333911, 12333916, 12333923, 290 40 A
Abstract:
An engine system includes an engine, an alternator, a load, and a controller that communicates with the engine, the alternator, and the load. The controller signals the engine to drive the alternator when the engine idles. When a load increase on the engine is detected, the controller reduces an alternator load on the engine in response to the load increase. Air flow into the engine is adjusted to compensate for the load increase, and concurrently the alternator load is increased. When a load decrease is detected, the alternator load is increased, and the air flow is subsequently adjusted while decreasing the alternator load. In another embodiment, spark timing of the engine is adjusted to compensate for the load decrease.

Misfire Detection System For Displacement On Demand (Dod) Engine

US Patent:
7188023, Mar 6, 2007
Filed:
Oct 27, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/260876
Inventors:
Gregory F. O'Daniel - Davisburg MI, US
David S. Mathews - Howell MI, US
Douglas J. Moening - Farmington MI, US
Tameem K. Assaf - Milford MI, US
Assignee:
GM Global Technology Operations, Inc. - Detroit MI
International Classification:
F02P 5/152
G01L 23/22
US Classification:
701111, 12340614
Abstract:
A cylinder misfire control system for a displacement on demand (DOD) engine that is operable in an activated mode and a deactivated mode includes a sensor that is responsive to rotation of a crankshaft of the engine and a first module that calculates a time derivative based on a first time period associated with a first deactivated cylinder and a second time period associated with a second deactivated cylinder. The first and second time periods are based on the rotation of the crankshaft. A second module detects a misfire occurrence in an activated cylinder based on the time period derivative.

Misfire Detection Apparatus For Internal Combustion Engine Based On Piston Speed

US Patent:
7353803, Apr 8, 2008
Filed:
Mar 28, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/390974
Inventors:
David S. Mathews - Howell MI, US
Tameem K. Assaf - Milford MI, US
David L. St. Pierre - Mason MI, US
Assignee:
GM Global Technology Operations, Inc. - Detroit MI
International Classification:
F02P 5/00
F02M 7/00
US Classification:
12340618, 123436, 73 3508, 701110
Abstract:
The present invention generally includes a method of detecting a misfire in an internal combustion engine. The method includes detecting a first engine speed at a first crankshaft position that corresponds to about a top dead center compression position of a first piston within a first cylinder and detecting a second engine speed at a second crankshaft position that corresponds to about a position subsequent to the top dead center compression position. The method determines whether the misfire occurred in the first cylinder based on the first engine speed and the second engine speed. The method provides an improved signal to noise ratio for engine misfire detection.

Cylinder Torque Balancing For Internal Combustion Engines

US Patent:
7500470, Mar 10, 2009
Filed:
May 11, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/432446
Inventors:
Kenneth J. Buslepp - Brighton MI, US
Douglas R. Verner - Sterling Heights MI, US
Randall J. Guild - Okemos MI, US
David S. Mathews - Howell MI, US
Assignee:
GM Global Technology Operations, Inc. - Detroit MI
International Classification:
F02D 41/14
US Classification:
123436, 123673
Abstract:
An engine torque control system for balancing torque output across cylinders of an internal combustion engine includes a first module that determines a derivative term for each cylinder of the engine based on rotation of a crankshaft. A second module determines a torque correction for a first cylinder based on an average derivative term associated with the first cylinder. The second module adjusts a torque output of the first cylinder based on the torque correction and adjusts a torque output of a second cylinder based on the torque correction.
