Wall System With Masonry External Surface And Associated Method

US Patent:
7415805, Aug 26, 2008
Filed:
Dec 8, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/728588
Inventors:
David L. Nickerson - West Brookfield MA, US
International Classification:
E04B 2/00
US Classification:
52426, 52442, 52424, 5230911
Abstract:
An improved wall system comprising a plurality of blocks formed at least partially of a masonry material, a layer of an insulative material, and a layer of a curable or settable material interposed between the blocks and the layer of insulative material. The blocks may provide the wall with a masonry external surface or an exterior surface that is substantially aesthetically completed upon arrangement of the blocks and prior to the pouring of the layer of curable or settable material. In an alternate embodiment, ties may extend between a pair of blocks to form a construction unit that can be assembled in a factory or other location and then transported to a work site. The construction unit may be configured to include a space between spaced apart blocks into which a layer of an insulative material and a layer of a curable or settable material may be received.

Method Of Manufacturing Hinged Cellular Insulating Inserts For Masonry Building Blocks

US Patent:
4543229, Sep 24, 1985
Filed:
Jul 8, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/511843
Inventors:
David L. Nickerson - Wilbraham MA
International Classification:
B29D 2700
US Classification:
264 464
Abstract:
A molded insulating insert of expanded polystyrene has a central section and hingedly connected side sections which are bendable toward each other to bring the insert to a U-shaped configuration for insertion in a building block cavity. The hinges are formed to provide resistance to full ninety degree bending of the side sections so that the insert side sections are inclined slightly outwardly in a free condition. On flexing inwardly and insertion in a block cavity the side sections tend to spring outwardly and frictionally grip the walls of the cavity. Lug-notch connection means frictionally retain the inserts in the U-shaped configuration and prevent dislodgement of sections in the event of hinge rupture. In molding the inserts, a transfer process is employed with the hinges partially formed in a hot mold and thereafter fully formed in a cold mold. The polystyrene is compressed in the hinge area to a higher density for hinge integrity.

Insulating Insert For Masonry Building Block And Method For Making Same

US Patent:
4462195, Jul 31, 1984
Filed:
Jan 13, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/339147
Inventors:

US Classification:
52405

Machine For The Automated Fitting Of Insulative Foam Inserts Into Masonry Building Blocks

US Patent:
5208954, May 11, 1993
Filed:
Jul 26, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/736690
Inventors:
David L. Nickerson - Wilbraham MA
Jeffrey A. Nickerson - Warren MA
Assignee:
Insulated Concrete Corporation - MA
International Classification:
B29D 2200
E04B 200
US Classification:
29 33K
Abstract:
Machine for the automated fitting of insulative foam inserts into the cores of masonry building blocks includes a frame for straddling, in superposed relation, a masonry block conveyor. The machine has a magazine section for sequentially feeding pairs of laterally compressible inserts linked together in juxtaposed relation by a frangible web of the foam material. The machine includes a vertically reciprocal tamping mechanism for moving each of the linked-pairs of inserts sequentially from the magazine section into the cavities of building blocks being carried on the block conveyor disposed below the machine. The machine further includes adjacent throat channels vertically aligned with the tamping mechanism and with the cores of each building block positioned to receive the inserts therein. The channels are each defined, in part, by a central wedge having its apex disposed upwardly to sever the web and separate the linked-pair of inserts as each is moved through the channels past the wedge. Each channel is substantially narrower at its lower end than the corresponding dimension of the insert in order to compress the same laterally for fitting or "stuffing" into the cores of the blocks in side-by-side relation.

Insulated Building Block

US Patent:
4856249, Aug 15, 1989
Filed:
Dec 15, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/285282
Inventors:
David L. Nickerson - Wilbraham MA
International Classification:
E04B 188
US Classification:
52405
Abstract:
An improved masonry building block has rectangular side walls and a pair of connecting arms spaced from each other and from the ends of the block. The arms are notched adjacent one side wall to receive an insulating insert. A rectangular insulating insert has cooperating notches which receive the arms with portions of the insert disposed in the arm notches. Both the block side walls and the insert have marginal flanges which overlap and interlock with contiguous blocks and inserts in a composite wall structure. A multi-part insert is provided and has a first portion where it resides within the block for transport and a second position where it projects into overlapping relationship with a subadjacent insert.

Insulated Block

US Patent:
4027445, Jun 7, 1977
Filed:
Dec 4, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/637641
Inventors:
David L. Nickerson - Wilbraham MA
Assignee:
Korfil, Incorporated - Chicopee MA
International Classification:
E04B 188
E04B 208
US Classification:
52405
Abstract:
A preformed masonry building block having a U-shaped preformed insulating insert of molded expandible polystyrene disposed in each cavity thereof. Each web of the building block is provided with a vertical insulating slot which is at least three fourths (3/4) of an inch wide and which has a volume equal to at least one half (1/2) a volume found by multiplying slot width by web height and thickness. Each end web has a slot adjacent the end of each leg of the adjacent insert and the legs project into and fill the slots. The intermediate web has a slot on each side thereof adjacent the body portions of the inserts and a projection on the body portion of each insert enters and fills its adjacent slot.
