Integrated Power Capacitor And Inductors/Transformers Utilizing Insulated Amorphous Metal Ribbon

US Patent:
4922156, May 1, 1990
Filed:
Apr 8, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/179342
Inventors:
David E. Turcotte - Tucson AZ
Waseem A. Roshen - Tucson AZ
Dale F. Regelman - Tucson AZ
Assignee:
ITT Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
H05B 4114
US Classification:
315244
Abstract:
A discrete device in which a capacitive and inductive function has been integrated is comprised of at least two insulated amorphous ribbons which are spirally wound to form a cylindrical toroid. Each of the amorphous metal ribbons is insulated from each other ribbon by a dielectric layer and wound in a stacked configuration to provide the capacitive function. Two conductive windings are then wrapped around segments of the cylindrical toroid to provide inductive and/or transforming functions as desired. A magnetic circuit is formed through the windings by the amorphous metal ribbons. A dielectric insulating layer between the ribbons is offset from the longitudinal edge of the ribbon so that the longitudinal edge of each ribbon is exposed. One ribbon has its longitudinal edge exposed on one surface of the toroid while another ribbon has its longitudinal edge exposed on the opposing surface of the toroid. Electrical contacts are then laid across an intersecting line contacting the exposed edge of each ribbon at a plurality of points.

Transformer/Inductor With Integrated Capacitor Using Soft Ferrites

US Patent:
4837659, Jun 6, 1989
Filed:
Mar 21, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/171313
Inventors:
Waseem A. Roshen - Tucson AZ
David E. Turcotte - Tucson AZ
Dale F. Regelman - Tucson AZ
Assignee:
ITT Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
H01H 928
H01F 2728
US Classification:
361270
Abstract:
A discrete electromagnetic device in which the transformer/inductor function and a capacitive function are integrated is achieved by utilizing both the magnetic permeability and the dielectric constant of one or more soft ferrite layers. The device is comprised of a plurality of soft ferrite planar layers spaced apart in a stacked array. Between each soft ferrite layer is a metallic layer which forms one of the plates of the capacitor. A first and second set of apertures are defined through each of the planar ferrite layers. The first and second set of apertures are aligned among the plurality of ferrite layers so that a conductive element is led through one set of apertures to form a loop or coil. A similar conductive element or coil is led through the second set of apertures to form a second loop. The two loops thus serve as the secondary and primary of a transformer or alternatively as two inductors with the ferrite material acting as the magnetically permeable core.

Single-Turn Primary And Single-Turn Secondary Flat Voltage Transformer

US Patent:
4862129, Aug 29, 1989
Filed:
Apr 29, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/188247
Inventors:
Waseem A. Roshen - Tucson AZ
David E. Turcotte - Tucson AZ
Dale F. Regelman - Tucson AZ
Assignee:
ITT Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
H01F 2708
H01F 2724
H01F 2728
US Classification:
336 61
Abstract:
A low-profile, high-frequency power transformer is comprised of a plurality of insulated ferrite slabs formed in a stacked array. In one embodiment a pair of slots are defined through the stacked array of insulated slabs. A single-turn metallic ribbon conductor is then looped through each pair of slots to form a corresponding first and second loop which are coupled in a magnetic flux circuit with each other through the stack. The distance separating one pair of slots is unequal to the distance separating the other pair of slots so that the loops formed by the ribbons have a corresponding unequal cross section. Hence the ratio of the voltages on the ribbons is proportional to the ratio of the respective cross-sectional areas of the ribbon loops. In another embodiment, a third ribbon is added having a cross-sectional loop area equivalent to the second ribbon to provide symmetrical, single-turn output coils.
