Method For Identifying Hydrothermal Alteration Areas Of The Earth

US Patent:
4581531, Apr 8, 1986
Filed:
Nov 16, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/552522
Inventors:
Eric P. Dion - Dallas TX
Assignee:
Mobil Oil Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
G01T 120
US Classification:
250253
Abstract:
An aerial natural gamma radiation survey is conducted over an exploration region. A change in the measured T1-208/K-40 ratio in the exploration region in contrast to a region known not to be hydrothermally altered identifies the exploration region as a hydrothermal alteration. A surface natural gamma radiation survey is conducted over the hydrothermally altered exploration region. A change in the T1-208/K-40 ratio at specific sites within the exploration region indicates the location of alteration products.

Method For Depth Referencing Hydrocarbon Gas Shows On Mud Logs

US Patent:
4578579, Mar 25, 1986
Filed:
Sep 1, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/528503
Inventors:
Eric P. Dion - Dallas TX
Assignee:
Mobil Oil Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
G01V 1100
G01V 506
US Classification:
250256
Abstract:
A hydrocarbon mud log and a natural gamma-ray mud log are recorded for well drilling operations. A natural gamma-ray wireline log is run in the well following drilling operations. The natural gamma-ray mud log and natural gamma-ray wireline log are correlated to identify the correct depth interval of gas shows on the hydrocarbon mud log.

Method For Monitoring Potassium Chloride Concentration In Drilling Fluids

US Patent:
4546252, Oct 8, 1985
Filed:
Jul 25, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/634090
Inventors:
Eric P. Dion - Dallas TX
Assignee:
Mobil Oil Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
G01V 500
US Classification:
2502521
Abstract:
The potassium chloride concentration of a drilling fluid is monitored during well drilling operations to identify any depletion in such concentration with time. Initially, the gamma radiation measuring apparatus utilized is calibrated by making gamma radiation measurements on self-shielded drilling fluid samples having successively increasing potassium chloride concentrations. A calibration constant is derived from the measured relationship between the potassium chloride concentrations of the various drilling fluid samples and their respective gamma radiation count rates. This calibration constant is then used along with the measured gamma radiation count rates from drilling fluid taken during well drilling operations to identify drilling fluid potassium chloride concentration.

System For Measuring The Natural Gamma Radiation Of Surface And Subsurface Formations

US Patent:
4580048, Apr 1, 1986
Filed:
Aug 31, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/528359
Inventors:
Eric P. Dion - Dallas TX
Assignee:
Mobil Oil Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
G01V 500
US Classification:
250256
Abstract:
A natural gamma radiation measuring system includes a gamma ray detector and a multichannel analyzer for recording a full gamma-ray energy spectrum. An artificial source of gamma radiation that is temperature insensitive provides a known level of gamma radiation which is utilized by the multichannel analyzer to provide gain stabilization for the full energy spectrum output of the gamma ray detector.

Method For Identifying Non-Magnetic Minerals In Earth Formations Utilizing Magnetic Susceptibility Measurements

US Patent:
4507613, Mar 26, 1985
Filed:
Oct 15, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/434443
Inventors:
Eric P. Dion - Dallas TX
Assignee:
Mobil Oil Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
G01V 336
G01V 328
G01N 2772
G01R 3316
US Classification:
324340
Abstract:
A magnetic susceptibility log is run through an earth formation to identify the presence of any select non-magnetic minerals in association with magnetic minerals. The select non-magnetic mineral is identified as being present when the magnetic susceptibility measurement exceeds a level at which a measurable concentration of the select non-magnetic mineral is expected to be present.

Method For Determining The Presence Of Platinum In Earth Formations

US Patent:
4463256, Jul 31, 1984
Filed:
Oct 15, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/434444
Inventors:
Eric P. Dion - Dallas TX
Assignee:
Mobil Oil Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
G01V 500
US Classification:
250256
Abstract:
A spectral natural gamma radiation logging tool is calibrated with a material of known potassium content so that the natural gamma radiation measured by such logging tool is related to potassium concentration. The earth formations surrounding a borehole are logged with such logging tool to identify the presence of potassium. A specified concentration of potassium correlates inversely with a magnetic mineral content in the earth formation. The amount of magnetic mineral content is a measure of the presence of the non-magnetic mineral platinum in the earth formation.

Method For Identifying Select Non-Magnetic Minerals In The Presence Of Magnetic Minerals

US Patent:
4523149, Jun 11, 1985
Filed:
Oct 15, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/434445
Inventors:
Eric P. Dion - Dallas TX
Assignee:
Mobil Oil Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
G01V 300
US Classification:
324377
Abstract:
A sample of an earth formation is subjected to a magnetizing field. The magnetic and non-magnetic fractions of the earth formation sample are separated while under the influence of the magnetizing field. The weights of the magnetic and non-magnetic fractions are measured and the weight percentage of the magnetic fractions determined. The presence or absence of select minerals in the non-magnetic fraction is determined on the basis of the weight percentage of the magnetic fraction.
