System For Assuring Recharge Of Brake Pipe Pressure In Holding Position Of Locomotive Brake Valve

US Patent:
4971399, Nov 20, 1990
Filed:
Nov 6, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/432004
Inventors:
Richard F. Balukin - Pittsburgh PA
Robert J. Worbois - North Huntingdon PA
John R. Reiss - North Versailles PA
Frank J. Jerina - Irwin PA
Assignee:
American Standard Inc. - Wilmerding PA
International Classification:
B60T 1134
US Classification:
303 33
Abstract:
In an electropneumatic brake control system including a brake valve in which a holding position permits brake pipe recharge without effecting a concurrent release of brakes, there is provided an arrangement for preventing a release control valve of a penalty application valve from being actuated to a position in which charging of equalizing reservoir pressure is interrupted when the brake valve handle is in Holding position, as well as Release position during electropneumatic brake control, while preventing such actuation of the penalty release control valve only in Release position in the event the electropneumatic brake control is inoperative.

Brake Valve Device Arranged For Electro-Pneumatic Control

US Patent:
4944564, Jul 31, 1990
Filed:
May 26, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/357567
Inventors:
Richard F. Balukin - Pittsburgh PA
John R. Reiss - North Versailles PA
Frank J. Jerina - Irwin PA
Assignee:
American Standard Inc. - Wilmerding PA
International Classification:
B60T 1554
US Classification:
303 33
Abstract:
An operators's brake valve device for a railway locomotive that is adapted to provide brake pipe recharging in a holding position of the brake valve handle in which the release of brake cylinder pressure is cut off by a release magnet valve device that, in conjunction with an appliction magnet valve device, provides electro-pneumatic control of the train brakes. These magnet valves are controlled electrically via pneumatically piloted electrical switches that receive discrete pressure signals according to the different positions of the brake valve handle.

Electro-Pneumatic Locomotive Brake Control System

US Patent:
5192118, Mar 9, 1993
Filed:
Jun 6, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/710849
Inventors:
Richard F. Balukin - Pittsburgh PA
John B. Newingham - Pittsburgh PA
Frank J. Jerina - Irwin PA
Assignee:
Westinghouse Air Brake Company - Wilmerding PA
International Classification:
B60T 1514
US Classification:
303 15
Abstract:
A microprocessor based electro-pneumatic locomotive brake control system in which a brake application is obtained automatically on the locomotive consist and train only in response to a loss of power at the lead or controlling locomotive microprocessor, and not in response to a loss of power at a trail or non-controlling locomotive microprocessor. The brake control system provides for releasing such a fail-safe brake application at the locomotive independently of the train brakes.

Tamper-Resistant Independent Brake Valve Device For Locomotive Air Brake Equipment

US Patent:
5439276, Aug 8, 1995
Filed:
Sep 30, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/128966
Inventors:
Frank J. Jerina - Irwin PA
Michael E. Romansky - North Huntingdon PA
Dale A. Chovan - Trafford PA
Assignee:
Westinghouse Air Brake Company - Wilmerding PA
International Classification:
B60T 1504
US Classification:
303 56
Abstract:
A tamper-resistant independent brake valve device for use in a brake equipment on railway locomotives including a main body casing carrying a movable handle, a rotatable cam, a pivotal cam dog and an exhaust and supply valve assembly, a spring housing attached to the main body casing by a plurality of one-way screws, a break-away adjusting screw for setting the maximum brake cylinder pressure on the railway locomotive, the pivotal cam dog including an enlarged head portion to preclude the insertion of a prying tool, and the pivotal cam dog having cam engaging roller which is rotated on a round head roller pin.

Safety Valve Arrangement

US Patent:
5246030, Sep 21, 1993
Filed:
Dec 21, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/994159
Inventors:
Frank J. Jerina - Irwin PA
Assignee:
Westinghouse Air Brake Company - Wilmerding PA
International Classification:
F16K 1706
US Classification:
137478
Abstract:
A safety or pressure relief valve which relieves excessive pressure in a storage reservoir in a compressed air system. The valve includes a lower valve body and an upper valve housing. A valve seat member is secured in the lower valve body. The valve seat member includes an annular dovetail groove for accommodating and retaining a fluorocarbon rubber O-ring seat. A valve disc and stem slidable within a stem guide member located in the upper valve housing. A compression spring for urging the valve disc against the fluorocarbon rubber O-ring seat to positively seal off the flow of air between an inlet and outlet port.
