Turbine Engine Lubrication System

US Patent:
4080783, Mar 28, 1978
Filed:
Jul 28, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/709449
Inventors:
Glenn Hamburg - Grosse Pointe Park MI
Gytis Jasas - Toledo OH
Assignee:
Teledyne Industries, Inc. - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
F02C 706
US Classification:
60 3908
Abstract:
A bearing lubrication system for a turbine engine is provided which utilizes a fuel-air mist to both lubricate and cool the bearing assembly. An annular fuel-air distributor is positioned adjacent the bearing assembly and includes an inlet and several outlet ports directed towards the bearing assembly. A fuel port and a source of pressurized air are coupled to the inlet of the fuel-air distributor so that the pressurized air mixes the fuel into the air and projects a fuel-air mist through the distributor and onto the bearing assembly. A fuel metering device maintains the fuel-air ratio outside of its flammability range to prevent fires within the bearing cavity. Exhaust passageways from the bearing cavity are disposed adjacent the bearing outer race to provide additional cooling of the bearing assembly during the exhaustion of the fuel-air mist from the bearing cavity.

Bearing Assembly With Lubrication And Cooling Means

US Patent:
4032198, Jun 28, 1977
Filed:
Jan 5, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/646872
Inventors:
Glenn W. Hamburg - Grosse Pointe Park MI
Assignee:
Teledyne Industries, Inc. - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
F16C 124
US Classification:
308 76
Abstract:
A bearing assembly with lubrication and cooling means for a bearing assembly of the type comprising an inner cylindrical ring, an outer cylindrical ring, and a plurality of bearing members disposed intermediate the inner and outer rings to permit rotation of the inner ring relative to the outer ring. An annular groove is formed around one end of the inner ring and a plurality of axial bores extend from the annular groove axially through the inner ring. At least one radial bore extends radially outward from each of said axial bores through the inner ring to provide fluid communication between the annular groove and the bearing members. In operation a lubricant, which is injected into the annular groove, flows through the axial bores in the inner ring. A portion of the lubricant is centrifugally forced through the radial bores to provide lubrication for the bearing members while the remainder of the lubricant flows through the axial bores to cool the bearing assembly. In the preferred form of the invention the radial bores are not only radially but also axially spaced apart from each other to provide a more even distribution of lubricant to the bearing members.

Turbine Bearing Lubrication System

US Patent:
4144950, Mar 20, 1979
Filed:
Dec 22, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/642687
Inventors:
Thomas D. Moyer - Toledo OH
Raymond Smith - Monclova OH
Aldo J. Urbani - Lambertville MI
Harley D. Greenburg - Monroe MI
Glenn W. Hamburg - Grosse Pointe Park MI
Francis X. Marsh - Maumee OH
Robert S. Van Huysen - Temperance MI
Assignee:
Teledyne Industries, Inc. - Los Angeles CA
International Classification:
F16D 346
US Classification:
184 611
Abstract:
A bearing lubrication system for use in a gas turbine engine which utilizes empellers on the drive shaft to pump a lubricant into a lubricant transfer housing. At least one passageway is formed in the transfer housing which directs the lubricant from the pump to a bearing. The lubricant passes through the bearing and thereafter is returned to the pump for the beginning of a new lubrication cycle.
