Multi-Color Image Display Apparatus

US Patent:
4754324, Jun 28, 1988
Filed:
Apr 14, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/039816
Inventors:
Gordon R. Spencer - Westwood MA
Assignee:
Raytheon Company - Lexington MA
International Classification:
H04N 574
H04N 922
US Classification:
358 60
Abstract:
Multi-color image display apparatus including a cathode ray tube having an electron gun disposed for directing an axially emerging electron beam onto an output phosphor screen comprised of two portions, each of which is disposed symmetrically with respect to the emerging electron beam and is provided with a respective different color phosphor material. The apparatus also includes a deflection system coupled to the emerging electron beam for deflecting it sequentially in respective inverted raster patterns over the two portions of the phosphor screen to produce respective different color mirror images of the same subject matter. Also, the apparatus includes an optical system coupled to the phosphor screen for superimposing the two color mirror images to produce a single multi-color image.

Color Image Display System For Producing And Combining Two Similarly-Oriented Color Component Images And An Inverted Color Component Image

US Patent:
4709261, Nov 24, 1987
Filed:
Dec 5, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/557981
Inventors:
Gordon R. Spencer - Westwood MA
Assignee:
Raytheon Company - Lexington MA
International Classification:
H04N 922
H04N 916
H04N 931
US Classification:
358 66
Abstract:
A multi-color image display system comprising a cathode ray type of tube having a single electron gun disposed for directing a beam of electrons onto an output image display screen provided with three juxtaposed segments of different phosphor materials which emit respective different color light when penetrated by electrons from the beam. The display system also includes a beam directing assembly coupled to the tube for deflecting the electron beam to scan respective raster patterns sequentially on the three segments of the output screen and varying the intensity of the electron beam accordingly to produce thereon respective different color component light images of the same subject matter, the outer images being inverted with respect to one another and the central image being oriented similarly to one of said outer images. Also, the display system includes an optical combiner assembly coupled to the output screen for providing equivalent optical paths for each of said different color component light images within the optical combiner assembly and for combining said different color component light images to display a single multi-color image of said subject matter.

Color Image Display System For Producing And Combining Four Color Component Images Each Inverted In At Least One Aspect Relative To The Other Images

US Patent:
4737843, Apr 12, 1988
Filed:
Dec 29, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/947294
Inventors:
Gordon R. Spencer - Westwood MA
Assignee:
Raytheon Company - Lexington MA
International Classification:
H04N 922
H04N 916
H04N 931
G03B 2106
US Classification:
358 66
Abstract:
An image display system comprising a cathode ray type of tube having an electron gun disposed for directing an electron beam onto an output phosphor screen provided with quadrant portions extending from a common point and made of respective different phosphor materials; a beam directing assembly coupled to the electron beam for deflecting the beam over each of the quadrant portions sequentially in a manner inverted in at least one aspect relative to the deflection of the beam over the other quadrant portions and producing thereon a respective component image of a subject inverted in at least one aspect relative to the other component images; and an optical combiner assembly coupled to the output screen for combining the component images and producing a single composite image of the subject. The optical combiner assembly includes a beamsplitter disposed in alignment with one of the quadrant portions and oriented at an angle with respect thereto for directing first and second portions of an image received from the aligned quadrant portion along respective first and second paths to respective first and second reflectors, combining the resulting reflected portions received back from the first and second reflectors, and directing the combined portions along a third path to the output of the optical combiner assembly.

Cathode Current Control System

US Patent:
4247801, Jan 27, 1981
Filed:
Mar 2, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/016860
Inventors:
Andras Dallos - Lincoln MA
John A. Buckbee - Wellesley MA
Gordon R. Spencer - Westwood MA
Assignee:
Raytheon Company - Lexington MA
International Classification:
H01J 2998
US Classification:
315107
Abstract:
A cathode current control system comprising an electron discharge device having a tubular envelope wherein an electron gun is disposed to beam a cathode current of electrons onto a spaced anode collector electrode, the gun including an electron emitting cathode, an apertured control grid electrode spaced from the cathode, and a further spaced series of beam forming electrodes; and external circuit means connected to the cathode and other electrodes of the device for maintaining the electrodes at respective predetermined electrical potentials relative to the cathode and for maintaining electron emission from the cathode sufficient for providing a predetermined level of cathode current associated with the predetermined electrical potentials of the electrodes.

Multi-Color Display

US Patent:
5121233, Jun 9, 1992
Filed:
Apr 18, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/510655
Inventors:
Gordon R. Spencer - Westwood MA
David B. Kanaly - Melbourne FL
Assignee:
Harris Corporation - Melbourne FL
Raytheon Company - Lexington MA
International Classification:
G02F 113
US Classification:
359 48
Abstract:
A display having as a light source thereof an electron tube. The electron tube has disposed in an evacuated envelope thereof a plurality of cathode means, each one thereof adapted to emit electrons in response to a control signal. A plurality of sets of at least one cathodoluminescent stripe is disposed within the envelope. Each one of said sets is associated with a corresponding one of the cathode means and adapted to emit light with a predetermined one of a set of primary colors in response to electrons emitted by the corresponding cathode means striking such stripe. An anode for collecting electrons emitted by said cathode is also disposed within the evacuated envelope.

Symmetrical Beamsplitter

US Patent:
4772095, Sep 20, 1988
Filed:
Dec 31, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/946670
Inventors:
Gordon R. Spencer - Westwood MA
Assignee:
Switchcraft, Inc. - Chicago IL
International Classification:
G02B 2714
US Classification:
350172
Abstract:
An optical system including a symmetrical beamsplitter comprised of a semi-transparent film of light reflective material sandwiched between two optical plates of transparent materials having respective thicknesses and indices of refraction suitable for providing equivalent optical paths on either side of the film. The beamsplitter may be positioned in optical alignment with an image source and oriented to have one of its surfaces at an angle to said source. Thus, a light ray emanating from the source will have a fractional component transmitted through the film along one optical path and a fractional component will be reflected from the film along an equivalent optical path disposed at an angle to said one optical path. Also, the beamsplitter may be located symmetrically between two image sources such that the light rays emanating from one source and reflected by the beamsplitter together with corresponding light rays emanating from the other source and transmitted by the beamsplitter combine and travel common paths from the beamsplitter film. As a result, an observer's eye or any similar focusing system may be positioned over a relatively large range of viewing angles to receive said combined light rays and produce a composite image.
