Easy Open Container End Closure

US Patent:
4687116, Aug 18, 1987
Filed:
Sep 10, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/905416
Inventors:
Herbert V. Dutt - Sarasota FL
Paul A. Santostasi - Sarasota FL
Assignee:
Sun Coast Plastics, Inc. - Sarasota FL
International Classification:
B65D 1734
US Classification:
220270
Abstract:
An easy open container end closure utilizes a pair of angled force directing score lines to direct an upward closure opening force which is applied to a pull ring or pull tab to an initial break line of finite length. The force directing score lines allow the container lid to pucker and to direct the applied opening force to the initial break line. Once this line has severed, continued lid separation acts in shear at two points of separation. The result is a container end closure which requires substantially less opening force than do prior art devices.

Two Part Closure

US Patent:
4637519, Jan 20, 1987
Filed:
Sep 3, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/771964
Inventors:
Herbert V. Dutt - Sarasota FL
Paul A. Santostasi - Sarasota FL
Assignee:
Sun Coast Plastics, Inc. - Sarasota FL
International Classification:
B65D 5304
US Classification:
215232
Abstract:
A two part closure for a container is comprised of a flexible foil sealing disk together with a flanged linerless screw threaded closure cap. The cap's sealing flanges contact the flexible foil sealing disk on opposite edges of the container's mouth rim and, as the cap is screwed down, these flanges bring the flexible foil sealing disk into continuous, intimate sealing contact with the container rim. Additionally, the inner closure flange draws the portion of the flexible foil sealing disk situated within the container mouth tight to eliminate creases and wrinkles in the foil sealing disk. Once the closure has been opened and the foil sealing disk removed, the container can be resealed by using the flanged linerless closure cap.

Tamper Evident Closure With Hook-Like Locking Tabs

US Patent:
4856665, Aug 15, 1989
Filed:
Dec 15, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/284959
Inventors:
Herbert V. Dutt - Sarasota FL
Duane H. Lewis - Claysville PA
Assignee:
Continental Plastics, Inc. - Triadelphia WV
International Classification:
B65D 4134
US Classification:
215252
Abstract:
A tamper evident closure has frangible bridges detachably connecting a tamper indicating band to the skirt of a cap, and hook-like locking tabs for securing the tamper indicating band to a transfer bead on a container, circumferentially displaced from one another and all aligned with a radially extending annular gap between the tamper indicating band and the cap, such that the closure can be integrally molded from thermoplastic material in a straight draw mold without slides, inserts or post molding operations. The frangible bridges extend along, as well as across, the annular gap and are flexible so that the tamper indicating band can be extended axially relative to the cap to accommodate for variations in dimensions and tolerances in containers to which the closure is applied.

Tamper Proof Closure Cap, Method, And Tool For Making Same

US Patent:
4526282, Jul 2, 1985
Filed:
Jan 5, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/567077
Inventors:
Herbert V. Dutt - Sarasota FL
Paul A. Santostasi - Sarasota FL
Assignee:
Sun Coast Plastics, Inc. - Sarasota FL
International Classification:
B65D 4134
US Classification:
215252
Abstract:
A tamper proof closure cap for a container, a tool for manufacturing the cap and a method for removing the cap from the tool are defined. The cap is designed with the tamper proof skirt as a unitary structure with the main body of the cap. The skirt has unique structural aspects which allow for less complexity in the tool and ease of removal of the cap from the tool. The tool includes a stripper ring which laterally support the skirt and permits a shift of the pivot plane for the skirt relative to the main body portion during removal of the cap from the mold.

Tamper Evident Closure With Tear Out Tab Integrally Molded Without Slides

US Patent:
4986430, Jan 22, 1991
Filed:
May 29, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/498326
Inventors:
Herbert V. Dutt - Sarasota FL
Assignee:
Continental Plastics, Inc. - Triadelphia VA
International Classification:
B65D 4132
US Classification:
215253
Abstract:
A tamper evident closure is integrally molded in a straight draw mold with a tear out tab extending laterally outward adjacent a slot in the free edge of the closure skirt and connected to the skirt by flexible, frangible bridges. After the closure is removed from the straight draw mold, the tear out tab is rotated about the flexible, frangible bridges into the slot and is retained therein by bevelled engagement ribs along the side edges of the tear out tab which snap over and engage the side edges of the slot. A radially inwardly directed projection on the tear out tab engages the conventional transfer bead on a container, and remains engaged thereby as the closure is unthreaded, thus, producing an axial force which fractures the bridges. The tear out tab then slides free of engagement with the edges of the slot and separates leaving a visual indication of prior removal of or tampering with the closure. If an attempt is made to reinsert the tear out tab in the slot, the torn ends of the fractured bridges extend laterally outward to provide an indication of the tampering.

Container Closure With Pop-Up Spout Fitment

US Patent:
5076475, Dec 31, 1991
Filed:
Jan 10, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/463296
Inventors:
Herbert V. Dutt - Sarasota FL
Assignee:
Continental Plastics, Inc. - Triadelphia WV
International Classification:
B67D 300
US Classification:
222530
Abstract:
A resealable container enclosure includes a fitment with an annular body which snap fits over the mouth of a container, a resilient frusto-conical wall integrally molded with the annular body in a convex configuration to extend outward from the container, and a spout extending outward from frusto-conical wall. The enclosure includes a cap which, as it is screwed onto the container, engages the spout and deforms the resilient frusto-conical wall into the concave configuration producing bending moments which cause the spout to pop-up as the resilient frusto-conical spout returns to the convex configuration upon removal of the cap. A plurality of circumferentially spaced ribs extending axially and radially along the inner surface of the resilient frusto-conical stiffen the frusto-conical wall in the preferred embodiment of the invention.

Process For Forming A Two Part Closure

US Patent:
4683016, Jul 28, 1987
Filed:
Sep 3, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/771952
Inventors:
Herbert V. Dutt - Sarasota FL
Istvan Foldesi - Laval, CA
Paul A. Santostasi - Sarasota FL
Assignee:
Sun Coast Plastics, Inc. - Quebec FL
Montreal Milling Cutter and Company, Inc. - Quebec
International Classification:
B29C 6502
B32B 3112
B32B 3120
B65D 5120
US Classification:
156 69
Abstract:
A two part closure for a container is comprised of a flexible foil sealing disk together with a flanged linerless screw threaded closure cap. During the process of applying the closure to a container, the flexible foil sealing disk is formed, heated, and is tack adhered to the rim of the container. A closure cap having downwardly extending spaced sealing flanges is then screwed onto the container. Once the closure cap has been applied and tightened down, the two part closure is subjected to a second heating step to fully activate the heat sensitive adhesive carried on the under surface of the flexible foil sealing disk thus securely adhering the flexible foil sealing disk to the container. Once the closure has been opened and the foil sealing disk removed, the container can be released by using the flanged linerless closure cap.
