Automatic Reconfiguration System For Change In Management Servers Having Protocol Destination Addresses

US Patent:
6353854, Mar 5, 2002
Filed:
Oct 1, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/164657
Inventors:
Daryl Carvis Cromer - Cary NC
Brandon John Ellison - Raleigh NC
Eric Richard Kern - Durham NC
Howard Jeffrey Locker - Cary NC
James Peter Ward - Raleigh NC
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 15173
US Classification:
709224, 709220, 714 4
Abstract:
A client on a network is provided with auxiliary low power logic, at the network adoptor, that is always active and simulates network traffic (e. g. , Ethernet format) normally sent under control of the main client system processor(s). This logic collects client status information and reports to the network manager, even when the system CPU is powered down, information which allows the network manager to exercise broader control and perform maintenance and upgrades which would otherwise require a dialog with the user and/or limit maintenance and reconfiguration of the client system to off-hours activity.

System For Detecting Tamper Events And Capturing The Time Of Their Occurrence

US Patent:
6357007, Mar 12, 2002
Filed:
Jul 1, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/108416
Inventors:
Daryl C. Cromer - Cary NC
Howard Locker - Cary NC
James P. Ward - Raleigh NC
Michael J. Steinmetz - Cary NC
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 1134
US Classification:
713194, 713178, 713192
Abstract:
A system for monitoring tamper events in a computer system is disclosed. The computer system is on a network. The system comprises a tamper real time clock (RTC) means which receives at least one tamper event signal from the computer system. The tamper RTC means includes a timer for indicating the time of a tamper event and a management device for receiving the at least one tamper event signal. The management device issues a command to the tamper RTC means to obtain the time of the at least one tamper event. The management device also generates a network packet which includes the time of the tamper event to a system administrator of the network. The present invention in a preferred embodiment is directed to a computer system which has the ability to functionally detect and store the time of a tamper event. A tamper real time clock (RTC) circuit is operatively connected with logic to store the date and time of an event as it occurs. In a preferred embodiment, the tamper event could be as simple as a toggle switch being activated when a cover on the computer system is removed.

Method And System In A Data Processing System For Deactivating A Password Requirement Utilizing A Wireless Signal

US Patent:
6370650, Apr 9, 2002
Filed:
Oct 8, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/169287
Inventors:
Daryl Carvis Cromer - Cary NC
Richard Alan Dayan - Wake Forest NC
Howard Locker - Cary NC
Michael Steinmetz - Cary NC
James Peter Ward - Raleigh NC
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
H04L 932
US Classification:
713202, 340 561
Abstract:
A method and system are described for deactivating a password requirement in a computer system included within a data processing system. The computer system requires the entry of a password in order to operate the computer system. A wireless signal is transmitted to the computer system such that computer system receives the signal. In response to a receipt of the wireless signal, the requirement that a password be entered is temporarily deactivated. The computer system is thus operable without the entry of the password.

Data Processing System And Method For Permitting A Server To Remotely Access A Powered-Off Client Computer Systems Asset Information

US Patent:
6381636, Apr 30, 2002
Filed:
Mar 10, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/265920
Inventors:
Daryl Carvis Cromer - Cary NC
Brandon Jon Ellison - Raleigh NC
Howard Locker - Cary NC
Michael Sievert - Monte Sereno CA
James Peter Ward - Raleigh NC
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 1516
US Classification:
709211, 709208, 709223, 709224, 709217, 709218
Abstract:
A data processing system and method are described for permitting a server computer system to remotely access asset information stored within one of a plurality of client computer systems. The client computer systems are coupled to the server computer system utilizing a network. Asset information is stored in a storage device within the particular client computer system. The asset information includes information identifying a plurality of components of the client computer system. The server computer system transmits a message to the client computer system while the client computer system is powered-off. A network adapter is included within the client computer system. The network adapter accesses the storage device to obtain the asset information while the client computer system is powered-off.

Data Processing System And Method For Determining A Physical Location Of A Client Computer System

US Patent:
6397249, May 28, 2002
Filed:
Nov 24, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/206259
Inventors:
Daryl Carvis Cromer - Cary NC
Brandon Jon Ellison - Raleigh NC
Eric R. Kern - Durham NC
Gregory W. Kilmer - Raleigh NC
James Peter Ward - Raleigh NC
Howard Jeffery Locker - Cary NC
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY

G06F 15173
US Classification:
709224, 709223, 709227, 709228, 709248, 370402, 370342
Abstract:
A data processing system and method are described for determining a physical location of a client computer system. The client and server computer systems are coupled together to form a local area network. Identifying information is associated with a tag. The client computer system transmits a wireless query signal to a physical region. In response to the tag being located within the physical region, the tag receives the wireless query signal. In response to a receipt of the query signal by the tag, the tag transmits a reply signal. The reply signal includes the identifying information. In response to a receipt of the reply signal by the client computer system, the physical location of the client computer system is determined utilizing the identifying information.
