Filed:
Jun 5, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/874735
Inventors:
James J. Britto - Westport MA
Robert D. Monahan - Canton MA
Thomas A. Hagerty - Somerville MA
Jon R. Rossman - Chelmsford MA
Bryan R. Hotaling - Arlington MA
Assignee:
First Years Inc., The - Lake Forest CA
International Classification:
E06B 908
US Classification:
160 231, 1602931, 160294, 160305, 2423824
Abstract:
A method is disclosed of installing a barrier device at a passageway. The method includes attaching a barrier housing containing a retractable barrier to a structural element on one side of the passageway, extending the barrier a desired distance from the barrier housing, with the barrier so extended, setting an extension limit of the barrier to prevent subsequent extension of the barrier beyond the desired distance from the barrier housing and, with the extension limit set, retracting the barrier into the housing. The set extension limit can permit subsequent retraction and re-extension of the barrier up to the set extension limit.

Positionable Pillow

US Patent:
6658681, Dec 9, 2003
Filed:
Apr 19, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/126046
Inventors:
James J. Britto - Westport MA
Richard M. Foley - Medfield MA
Assignee:
The First Years, Inc. - Lake Forest CA
International Classification:
A47G 910
US Classification:
5655, 5636, 5640
Abstract:
A nursing pillow has a flexible, positionable spine that allows the pillow to be deformed into a number of stable shapes. The spine is enclosed within a resilient body forming a medial region and first and second cantilever arms extending from opposite ends of the medial region to define a central opening between the arms in an unloaded, nominal shape. The spine is of sufficient stiffness to keep the pillow from returning from an adjusted shape to its nominal shape when unloaded. The spine may be formed of articulating links, or a malleable rod.

Pumping Breast Milk

US Patent:
6673036, Jan 6, 2004
Filed:
Oct 13, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/687452
Inventors:
James Joseph Britto - Westport MA
Assignee:
The First Years Inc. - DE
International Classification:
A61M 106
US Classification:
604 74, 604346
Abstract:
A portable, electric breast pump has an electronic controller adapted to track time and operate a solenoid to automatically maintain a predetermined suction and release rhythm as a function of time to mimic the natural sucking rhythm of an infant. Suction is produced by a continuously running diaphragm pump. A needle valve permits user vacuum level adjustment, but no other user control is required. A flapper valve in the top of the bottle reduces the suction rise time but incorporates a fixed amount of leakage to build a small amount of bottle pressure for pulling collected milk into the bottle during the release portion of the cycle. An improved bulkhead design helps to keep milk from entering the diaphragm pump if the unit is shaken or turned on its side.

Booster Seat

US Patent:
6692072, Feb 17, 2004
Filed:
May 10, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/852549
Inventors:
Elizabeth Nelson - Walpole MA
Gerry J. Kaeblein - North Attleboro MA
Vincent J. DeSanto - Lincoln RI
John P. Kearney - North Attleboro MA
Dana L. Padula - Cumberland RI
Kyle A. Nanna - Westwood MA
Susan M. Grassel - Lincoln RI
James J. Britto - Westport MA
Assignee:
The First Years Inc. - Avon MA
International Classification:
A47C 102
US Classification:
2972501, 297485, 297467, 297129
Abstract:
A booster seat comprises a base having a lower surface sized to rest upon a chair seat and an upper surface generally parallel to the lower surface, a seat back hinged connected to the base at a rearward portion of the booster seat and constructed to be folded toward and secured against the base for storage, an adjustable strap extending from the booster seat a length sufficient to secure the booster seat upon a chair, wherein the upper surface and the lower surface are spaced apart by at least about 1 inch when supporting a child weighing about 20 pounds thereupon to provide an elevated seating position, and wherein, with the seat back folded against the upper surface of the base for storage, the booster seat has an overall thickness, measured perpendicularly to the lower surface of the base, of less than about 3 inches.

Pumping Breast Milk

US Patent:
6749582, Jun 15, 2004
Filed:
Apr 30, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/135288
Inventors:
James J. Britto - Westport MA
Richard M. Foley - Medfield MA
Brian R. DAmelio - Maynard MA
Thomas A. Hagerty - Somerville MA
Bryan R. Hotaling - Arlington MA
James R. Varney - Medford MA
Jon R. Rossman - Chelmsford MA
Assignee:
The First Years Inc. - Lake Forest CA
International Classification:
A61M 106
US Classification:
604 74, 604316
Abstract:
A breast pump provides multiple orientations of the pumping lever with respect to the breast shield. A breast pump includes a liner extending from the breast shield, through the suction chamber, and out of the suction chamber, which liner shields other components of the pump from contamination by the flow of milk through the pump during pumping operation. A breast pumping device includes a pumping lever for manually providing a cyclical vacuum within the suction chamber and an external pumping source, connected to the suction bell, that the user can activate to provide a cyclical vacuum within the suction chamber. A breast pump provides a smaller change in the grip width from when the lever is fully-extended to when the lever is fully-retracted, allowing more comfortable manual pumping.

Drinking Container

US Patent:
6923337, Aug 2, 2005
Filed:
Aug 27, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/648974
Inventors:
