Gas Lighter With Safety Device

US Patent:
6431854, Aug 13, 2002
Filed:
Dec 18, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/029499
Inventors:
Ming Fang - Hacienda Heights CA, 91745
International Classification:
F23Q 246
US Classification:
431153, 431277
Abstract:
A safety fuel lighter with an improved ignitor assembly, including a striker wheel which rotates about an axis in response to force applied to the striker wheel by a users thumb or finger. The striker wheel has an annular center portion, two outer annular portions sandwiching the center portion, and a bore extending through the center portion and the two outer portions. An axle is positioned within the bore of the striker wheel, where the axle has a diameter which is smaller than the diameter of the bore. A mounting frame has a spring receptacle and a pair of mounting holes for receiving the axle so that the striker wheel can move from a first position to a second position. A spring is received within the spring receptacle and positioned below a flint. The spring exerts a compressive force against the flint and forces the flint into contact with the striker wheel. The compressive force exerted by the spring being insufficient to cause the flint to generate sparks when the striker wheel is in the first position and rotated, and the compressive force exerted by the spring being sufficient to cause the flint to generate sparks when the striker wheel is in the second position and rotated.

System And Method For Detecting And Excluding Outlier Sensors In Sensor-Based Monitoring

US Patent:
7096159, Aug 22, 2006
Filed:
Sep 2, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/932578
Inventors:
Zehra Cataltepe - Fair Haven NJ, US
Ming Fang - Princeton Junction NJ, US
Claus Neubauer - Monmouth Junction NJ, US
Chao Yuan - Plainsboro NJ, US
Assignee:
Siemens Corporate Research Corp. - Princeton NJ
International Classification:
G06F 15/00
G06F 19/00
US Classification:
702185, 700110
Abstract:
A system for detecting one or more faulty sensors in a multi-sensor monitor includes a partitioning module for partitioning sensor values generated by the multi-sensor monitor into two distinct sets, a training set and a validation set. The system also includes a training module for training a model using the sensor values belonging to the training set and applying the model to each sensor value belonging to the validation set so as to determine a range of acceptable sensor values. The system further includes an estimating module for obtaining an estimated sensor value for each sensor using the model, and a fault-determining module for testing at least one sensor combination if a sensor value is not within its range of acceptable sensor values. A sensor combination includes at least one sensor whose estimated sensor value is not within the range of acceptable values.

Utility Lighter With A Saftey Feature

US Patent:
2009006, Mar 5, 2009
Filed:
Mar 20, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/052631
Inventors:
Ming Fang - Diamond Bar CA, US
International Classification:
F23Q 2/16
F23D 11/36
F23Q 2/00
C10L 11/00
US Classification:
431153
Abstract:
A utility lighter with a safety device having a trigger, a stop and a safety button. The trigger has a trigger engagement element and a lever. The trigger engagement element is capable of initiating the creation of a spark. The lever is capable of rotational movement about a point located on the trigger and has a lever stop. The safety button comprises a lever engagement portion. The lever has a first position where the lever stop is aligned with the stop and the lever stop will arrest the movement of the trigger preventing the creation of a spark and/or the release of fuel. Thus when a user applies force to the safety button, the lever engagement portion interacts with the lever. The lever engagement portion moves in a direction that is approximately transverse to the direction of movement of the trigger and urges the lever to a second position. When the lever is in the second position, the lever stop is out of alignment with the stop such that the movement of the trigger will not be arrested.

Lockable Spark Generating Device For A Lighter

US Patent:
5676537, Oct 14, 1997
Filed:
Apr 23, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/636576
Inventors:
Ming Fang - Rowland Heights CA
Assignee:
ERA Intermarketing Co., Inc. - Rowland Hts. CA
International Classification:
F23D 1136
US Classification:
431153
Abstract:
A lockable spark generating device for a lighter includes a supporting frame, an ignition means and a locking means. The supporting frame is disposed on a gas reservoir having a valve which is actuated by a gas lever pivotally mounted on the supporting frame for releasing gas therefrom. The ignition means comprises a flint supported by a resilient element and a spark wheel which is rotatably mounted on the supporting frame for movement between a locking position and an ignition position. The spark wheel has a knurling surface adapted for contact by a user and rotatable by the user and a striking surface in contact with the flint. The flint is retained urging against the striking surface of the spark wheel by means of the resilient element for generating sparks directed toward the valve when the striking surface is driven to rotate against the flint by moving the knurling surface in the direction of the gas lever by the user. The locking means comprises at least a locking pawl member disposed on the supporting frame having a pawl surface adapted to engaged with the knurling surface of the spark wheel when the spark wheel is positioned in the locking position normally for stopping any rearward rotation movement of the spark wheel to prevent unexpected ignition, thereby rendering the lighter children resistant.
