Filed:
Apr 22, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/112445
Inventors:
Chandra S. Namuduri - Troy MI, US
Balarama V. Murty - West Bloomfield MI, US
Anthony L. Smith - Troy MI, US
Jie Tong - Sterling Heights MI, US
Mark A. Golden - Washington MI, US
John C. Ulicny - Oxford MI, US
Assignee:
GM Global Technology Operations, Inc. - Detroit MI
International Classification:
F16D 27/00
US Classification:
192 215
Abstract:
A magnetorheological (MR) fluid coupling for vectoring torque with respect to a shaft capable of rotary motion is disclosed. The coupling includes a stator, a rotor having a rotational degree of freedom with respect to the stator and configured for physical communication with the shaft, and a magnetic field generator. The stator and rotor define an annular space therebetween and are coupled via a MR fluid disposed within the annular space. The magnetic field generator is in field communication with the MR fluid and is disposed to produce a substantially radially directed magnetic field across the annular space. The rotor is rotationally responsive to the application of a magnetic field at the MR fluid.

Rotary Actuator Ball-Detent Locking Mechanism

US Patent:
8148670, Apr 3, 2012

Magneto-Rheological Coupling With Sealing Provisions

US Patent:
2006025, Nov 16, 2006
Filed:
Oct 7, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/246029
Inventors:
Balarama Murty - West Bloomfield MI, US
Chandra Namuduri - Troy MI, US
Jie Tong - Rowland Heights CA, US
Kenneth Shoemaker - Highland MI, US
International Classification:
F16D 27/00
US Classification:
192021500
Abstract:
A magneto-rheological coupling (MRC) is provided having an input assembly operable to receive a torque input and an output member operable to selectively transmit torque to a driveshaft. A magneto-rheological fluid, or MRF, having a variable viscosity in response to a magnetic flux field is operable to vary the torque transmitted from the input assembly to the output member. At least one annular lip forming a magneto-rheological fluid retention pocket is provided on at least one of the input assembly and the output member of the MRC. The annular lip is operable to direct MRF away from a roller bearing, thereby reducing the likelihood of MRF fluid incursion within the roller bearing. Additionally, a labyrinth seal may be employed to provide additional protection to the bearing. The labyrinth seal may have an annular bushing disposed therein to reduce the clearances of the labyrinth seal.

Mechanism For Variable Valve Lift And Cylinder Deactivation

US Patent:
6360705, Mar 26, 2002
Filed:
Oct 19, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/692379
Inventors:
Madhusudan Raghavan - West Bloomfield MI
Jie Tong - Troy MI
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
F01L 134
US Classification:
123 9016, 123 9039, 123 9041, 123 9044
Abstract:
A valve lift mechanism for an internal combustion engine is disposed on the engine cylinder head. The valve lift mechanism has a rocker arm pivotally mounted on the stem of an engine intake valve that is slidably mounted in the cylinder head of the engine. The inlet valve is reciprocated by rocking motion of the rocker arm to control the opening and closing of an inlet passage in the cylinder to thereby control the incoming air/fuel mixture. A contact roller is mounted adjacent one end of the rocker arm on one side of the pivotal mount and a contact surface is formed along the rocker arm on the opposite side of the pivotal mount. A positioning mechanism including a roller is operable to selectively position a contact point between the roller and the contact surface to establish a rocking point for the rocker arm between a maximum lift position for the inlet valve and a minimum lift position of the inlet valve.
