Abstract:
The present invention provides high mechanical strength amphiphilic polymer networks and implantable biological devices that are capable of encasing and, thus, immunoisolating biological material from the immunological response of a host individual. The present invention also provides methods for the formation of the amphiphilic networks and implantable biological devices. The present invention also provides a method for the treatment of type I diabetes mellitus comprising the steps of encasing a sufficient amount of islet of Langerhans cells within said biological device, wherein said biological device is capable of immunoisolating said encased islet cells upon implantation into an individual; implanting said biological device into a diabetic host individual; allowing said implanted biological device to remain implanted said diabetic individual for a time sufficient to normalize the blood glucose level in said diabetic individual.

Poly(Vinyl Chloride)-G-Poly(-Methylstyrene) Having A Single Glass Transition Temperature

US Patent:
6384147, May 7, 2002
Filed:
Mar 19, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/811938
Inventors:
Joseph P. Kennedy - Akron OH
Zhengjie Pi - Akron OH
Assignee:
University of Akron - Akron OH
International Classification:
C08F25902
US Classification:
525292, 525104, 525317
Abstract:
A grafted poly(vinyl chloride) having at least one pendant chain which comprises poly(-methylstyrene). The graft copolymer has only a single glass transition temperature of from about 100Â C. to about 130Â C. The poly(vinyl chloride)-g-poly(-methylstyrene) can be utilized as a high heat distortion poly(vinyl chloride) material, as the single glass transition temperature is considerably higher than that of homopolymer poly(vinyl chloride). The molecular weight of the pendant poly(-methylstyrene) chain is less than about 10,500 g/mol number average.

Hydrophobizing Microemulsions Which Improve The Protection, Drying Rate And Shine Of Surfaces

Joseph P. Kennedy - Akron OH
Lonn L. Swinehart - Naples FL
Assignee:
Capital Chemical Company - North Canton OH
International Classification:
C11D 318
US Classification:
510417, 510475, 510504, 106 2
Abstract:
The present invention relates to microemulsion compositions which can be utilized as coatings to improve the drying rate, protection, and shine of various surfaces, specifically metallic vehicle surfaces. Polyisobutylene copolymers and derivatives thereof are utilized as a hydrophobe.

Star Polymers Having Statistical Poly(Isobutylene-Co-Styrene) Copolymer Arms

US Patent:
6512056, Jan 28, 2003
Filed:
Mar 9, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/802338
Inventors:
Joseph A. Kennedy - Akron OH
Diana L. Hull - Lausanne, CH
Assignee:
The University of Akron - Akron OH
International Classification:
C08L 5302
US Classification:
525314, 525316, 525244, 525 98
Abstract:
The synthesis and characterization of star copolymers by living carbocationic copolymerization of statistical polymers comprising monomers of isobutylene (IB) and another monomer selected from the group consisting of styrene, isoprene and living carbocationically copolymerizable derivatives thereof is described. The poly(isobutylene-co-styrene) arms emanate from a calix[n]arene core where n preferably equals 8, forming an multi(octa)-arm star. The arms are advantageously fitted with crosslinkable termini such as allyl or hydroxyl end groups. The hydroxyl-terminated arm star copolymers are particularly suitable for use in coatings when reacted with crosslinking agents such as isocyanates.

Multi-Component Polymeric Networks Containing Poly(Ethylene Glycol)

US Patent:
6528584, Mar 4, 2003
Filed:
Apr 12, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/833774
Inventors:
Joseph P. Kennedy - Akron OH
Pious V. Kurian - Akron OH
Assignee:
The University of Akron - Akron OH
International Classification:
C08L 8312
US Classification:
