Abstract:
A seating system for an automotive vehicle includes a side airbag mounted to an outboard portion of a seatback, with the side airbag having an occupant reaction surface which is combined with deployable upper and lower reaction members attached to the airbag to define an augmented occupant reaction surface available upon inflation of the airbag.

Side Airbag System

US Patent:
7350803, Apr 1, 2008
Filed:
Feb 10, 2005
Appl. No.:
10/906231

B60R 21/207
US Classification:
2807302
Abstract:
A side airbag system () for a vehicle is provided. The side airbag system () includes a seatback frame () having a front side (), a rear side (), and an outboard side (). The outboard side () of the seatback frame () has an airbag module () coupled thereto and extending substantially outboard from the seatback frame (). The airbag module () is positioned for deploying an airbag () substantially forward. The rear side () of the seatback frame () has a rear cover panel () attached thereon. This rear cover panel () is a one-piece element for covering the airbag module () and both the rear side () and the outboard side () of the seatback frame (). The system () also includes foam cushion padding (), which is deformed by the airbag () upon its deployment.

Tension-Member Automotive Door Trim Pull

US Patent:
7549689, Jun 23, 2009
Filed:
Oct 3, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/866561
Inventors:
John Pinkerton - Canton MI, US
Joseph Edward Abramczyk - Farmington Hills MI, US
Assignee:
Ford Global Technologies, LLC - Dearborn MI
International Classification:
B60N 3/02
US Classification:
296 102, 2961467, 296153
Abstract:
A pull cup in a vehicle door is fitted to a door trim panel substrate and is connected to the inner door panel of the vehicle door by way of a bracket. The bracket is oriented to resist vertical loads and tension loads such that the bracket is allowed to deflect in compression loading in the event of a side impact. In one embodiment the bracket has horizontal slots through which shoulder fasteners are fitted to attach the bracket to the inner door panel. This configuration allows deflection in compression loading. In another embodiment of the bracket a pair of arms is provided between the pull cup and the inner door panel. This configuration allows buckling of the arms on compression loading.

Door Spacer Block Design For Side Impact Protection

US Patent:
8272679, Sep 25, 2012
Filed:
Feb 25, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/712259
Inventors:
Zhibing Deng - Northville MI, US
Joseph Edward Abramczyk - Farmington Hills MI, US
Djamal Eddine Midoun - Ann Arbor MI, US
Richard Lee Matson - Canton MI, US
Matthew Ammons - Plymouth MI, US
Assignee:
Ford Global Technologies, LLC - Dearborn MI
International Classification:
B60J 5/00
US Classification:
2961466, 29618712
Abstract:
A strategically located door spacer block for transferring door beam bend/kink away from the occupant seating position is provided. The door spacer block is positioned between the door inner panel and the door outer panel and is aligned with the door beam. The door spacer block of the disclosed invention is placed between door inner panel and the door outer panel with the intention of minimizing the effect that the bend/kink in the door beam has on the occupant loading. The door spacer block engages the door beam and transfers the effective position of the kink of the door structure in a side impact away from the occupant seating position, thus freeing up crushable space in the occupant loading zone. The door spacer block of the disclosed invention eliminates or delays the loading of the beam surface to the pelvis bolster material, thus enabling additional free-crush space and allowing for a lower force transfer to the occupant.

Seating System For Automotive Vehicle

US Patent:
2006011, Jun 8, 2006
Filed:
Dec 3, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/904900
Inventors:
JAMES PENG - YPSILANTI MI, US
JOSEPH ABRAMCZYK - FARMINGTON HILLS MI, US
KURT EWING - PLYMOUTH MI, US
JOHN PINKERTON - CANTON MI, US
BRIAN SPAHN - PLYMOUTH MI, US
Assignee:
FORD MOTOR COMPANY - DEARBORN MI
International Classification:
B60R 21/22
B60R 21/16
US Classification:
280730200, 280743200
Abstract:
A seating system for an automotive vehicle includes a seat frame mounted upon a vehicle floorpan. A seat cushion and seatback are mounted to the seat frame. A side airbag is mounted to an outboard portion of the seatback and has at least one flexible tension member attached to and extending between the seat frame and an external surface of the airbag. The flexible tension member maintains the airbag in an appropriate position during a deployment event.

Side Curtain Airbag With Pressure Control Device

US Patent:

Filed:
Jul 17, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/504765
Inventors:
Kurt Lewis Ewing - Plymouth MI, US
Matthew B. Makowski - Northville MI, US
Joseph Edward Abramczyk - Farmington Hills MI, US
Brian Robert Spahn - Plymouth MI, US
Mary A. Mason - Dearborn MI, US
Anthony Edmond Rencher - Southfield MI, US
Abdelmonaam Sassi - Windsor, CA
Selvakumar Inbaraj Daniel - Novi MI, US
Assignee:
FORD GLOBAL TECHNOLOGIES, LLC - Dearborn MI
International Classification:
B60R 21/16
US Classification:
2807302
Abstract:
An inflatable safety curtain for use in a vehicle interior is provided. A first inflatable portion may be mounted to the vehicle interior. A second inflatable portion may be mounted to the first portion. The first and second portions may be in fluid communication. A pressure control device is disposed between the first and second inflatable portions to selectively prevent fluid communication between the first and second portion. The pressure control device is a flexible valve from fabric or a memory shape material, a chamber valve having an enlarged opening, or a flapper valve.

Automotive Vehicle With Enhanced Lateral Collision Intrusion Resistance

US Patent:
6758516, Jul 6, 2004
Filed:
Jun 13, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/250214
Inventors:
Joseph Edward Abramczyk - Farmington Hills MI
Karthik Chitoor - Canton MI
Paul Culbertson - Farmington Hills MI
Zheng James Peng - Ypsilanti MI
Sandeep Kumar Gupta - West Bloomfied MI
Eric Layton Stratten - Plymouth MI
Herbert Yang - Ann Arbor MI
Assignee:
Ford Global Technologies, LLC - Dearborn MI
International Classification:
B62D 2522
US Classification:
29618712, 29619305, 29620303, 296209
Abstract:
An automobile includes a door, inner and outer rocker panels, and a floor pan joined to the inner rocker panel. A structural frame extends under the body. A frame standoff member is mounted to the inner rocker panel and extends inboard to a frame rail. The frame standoff member is separated from the frame rail by a clearance gap. Once the gap is closed due to lateral deformation of the door, rocker panels, and floor pan, the frame standoff member will resist further deformation of the door and rocker panels without dynamically coupling the door or rocker panels to the frame rail during normal operation of the vehicle.

Cable Reinforcement For Vehicle Doors

US Patent:
2022037, Dec 1, 2022
Filed:
May 25, 2021
