Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine With Integrated Magnetic Bearings

US Patent:
6020665, Feb 1, 2000
Filed:
Feb 25, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/030757
Inventors:
Joseph Michael Maurio - Waterford CT
Edgar S. Thaxton - Bradford RI
Assignee:
Electric Boat Corporation - Groton CT
International Classification:
H02K 709
US Classification:
310 905
Abstract:
In the particular embodiments described in the specification, a permanent magnet synchronous machine includes a stator with a plurality of stator coils and a rotor within the stator having a plurality of permanent magnets disposed around its periphery, and position detectors for detecting the horizontal, vertical and axial positions of the rotor within the stator. A magnetic bearing control arrangement generates control signals based on deviations of the rotor position from a desired position and supplies corrective signals to the stator coils and a motor control arrangement detects the angular position and speed of the rotor within the stator and supplies signals to the stator coils simultaneously with the magnetic bearing control signals to control the angular position and rotational speed of the rotor.

Energy Recovery Arrangement For A Power Electric Switch

US Patent:
6066902, May 23, 2000
Filed:
Oct 7, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/167353
Inventors:
Joseph M. Maurio - Waterford CT
Edgar S. Thaxton - Bradford RI
Assignee:
Electric Boat Corporation - Groton CT
International Classification:
H01H 3700
US Classification:
307117
Abstract:
In the embodiments disclosed in the specification, a thermoelectric generator is provided in a layer between a heat transfer plate and a plurality of power electronic switches and the voltage generated by the thermoelectric generator is used to control switching of the switches. When the voltage generated by the thermoelectric generator is insufficient to control the switches, power source is taken from the power to be controlled by the switches and stepped down for use in controlling the switches.

Parallel Resonant Dc Linked Inverter Arrangement And Method Utilizing Antiferroelectric Dielectric Material

US Patent:
6141228, Oct 31, 2000
Filed:
Jun 2, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/323801
Inventors:
Joseph M. Maurio - Waterford CT
Assignee:
Electric Boat Corporation - Groton CT
International Classification:
H02H 7122
US Classification:
363 56
Abstract:
In the parallel resonant DC link inverter described in the specification, a DC voltage is applied to a plurality of semiconductor switches to provide an AC driving voltage for an AC motor by way of an LC tank circuit containing a nonlinear capacitance device having an antiferroelectric material as its dielectric. As a result of the increase in capacitance with increased voltage, the voltage peak of the link voltages produced by the circuit is reduced without a corresponding reduction in the volt-second product applied to the motor load.

Method And Arrangement For A High Voltage Single-Stage Variable Speed Drive

US Patent:
6118932, Sep 12, 2000
Filed:
Dec 9, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/208115
Inventors:
Joseph M. Maurio - Waterford CT
Gregory A. Duba - Stonington CT
Edgar S. Thaxton - Bradford RI
Assignee:
Electric Boat Corporation - Groton CT
International Classification:
H02P 528
H02M 700
US Classification:
388811
Abstract:
A high voltage, single-stage variable speed motor power supply utilizes direct AC-to-AC converters that do not have any intermediate DC link, along with a multi-level, multi-phase, multi-circuit variable speed motor drive and a motor in which a stator is wound with a number of multi-phase circuits. Each multi-phase circuit includes semiconductor switches arranged in drive switch pairs which are operated to produce an effective DC supply with the switches being controlled so that the most positive line-to-line source voltage is utilized for the inversion process.

Linear Positioning System Utilizing Helically Polarized Magnet

US Patent:
2017029, Oct 19, 2017
Filed:
Mar 29, 2017
Appl. No.:
15/473160
Inventors:
JOSEPH MICHAEL MAURIO - WESTMINSTER MD, US
CHARLES C. MCCARTHY - TIMONIUM MD, US
MARK MULHERN - TIMONIUM MD, US
Assignee:
NORTHROP GRUMMAN SYSTEMS CORPORATION - FALLS CHURCH VA
International Classification:
G01R 33/04
G01D 5/14
G01R 33/00
G01R 33/028
Abstract:
A system includes a helically polarized magnet having a plurality of north and south poles circumferentially and helically patterned along a linear axis. Magnetic flux varies at different positions along a linear path in a direction aligned with the linear axis. A multi-axis magnetometer and/or magnetometer array is configured with at least two sensing coils to detect the position of the helically polarized magnet by sensing the magnetic flux variations at the different positions along the linear path.
