Unified Web Hosting And Content Distribution System And Method For Assuring Predetermined Performance Levels

US Patent:
7657622, Feb 2, 2010
Filed:
Dec 23, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/743430
Inventors:
Frederick Douglis - Basking Ridge NJ, US
David H. Shur - Holmdel NJ, US
Joseph M. Sommer - Rutherford NJ, US
Jacobus E. Van Der Merwe - New Providence NJ, US
Assignee:
AT&T Intellectual Property II, L.P. - Reno NV
International Classification:
G06F 15/173
US Classification:
709224, 709226
Abstract:
A service model, integrated system, and method for enabling a service provider to deliver an integrated web hosting and content distribution service offering, which affords assured operational performance service levels, regardless of whether the customer's web site is served by the service provider's hosting center, the service provider's content distribution network (CDN), by a third party web host, or by a third party CDN. A monitoring system of the primary service provider receives detailed capacity and health statistics from any CDN under the operational control of the primary service provider, receives aggregate capacity and health statistics from other CDNs not under the operational control of the primary service provider. A redirection system then decides to which web host, content distribution network, or combination thereof, user requests for content are directed in order that operational performance service levels are maintained.

System And Method For Controlling Devices That Are Connected To A Network

US Patent:
8010369, Aug 30, 2011
Filed:
Oct 30, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/929408
Inventors:
Joseph A. Alfred - Somerset NJ, US
Joseph M. Sommer - Rutherford NJ, US
Assignee:
AT&T Intellectual Property I, L.P. - Atlanta GA
International Classification:
G10L 21/06
US Classification:
704275
Abstract:
A system, method and computer-readable medium for controlling devices connected to a network. The method includes receiving an utterance from a user for remotely controlling a device in a network; converting the received utterance to text using an automatic speech recognition module; accessing a user profile in the network that governs access to a plurality of devices on the network and identifiers which control a conversion of the text to a device specific control language; identifying based on the text a device to be controlled; converting at least a portion of the text to the device control language; and transmitting the device control language to the identified device, wherein the identified device implements a function based on the transmitted device control language.

Policy Based Dissemination Control Of Electronic Messages

US Patent:
8126969, Feb 28, 2012
Filed:
Mar 8, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/075568
Inventors:
Robert J. Hall - Berkeley Heights NJ, US
Joseph Michael Sommer - Rutherford NJ, US
Assignee:
AT&T Intellectual Property II, L.P. - Atlanta GA
International Classification:
G06F 15/16
G06F 17/30
US Classification:
709206, 726 26
Abstract:
Disclosed is a system and method for policy based dissemination control of controlled content (e. g. , electronic messages). Upon detection at a receiving device that a user is attempting further dissemination (e. g. , forwarding) of controlled content, the receiving device sends a query to a policy control server. The policy control server uses the information received in the query to perform a database lookup in order to determine dissemination control instructions. The dissemination control instructions are sent to the receiving device and the receiving device enforces the instructions with respect to the attempted dissemination. The dissemination control instructions may, for example, allow further dissemination, deny further dissemination, or allow further dissemination only upon receipt of permission from the content owner. The dissemination control instructions may also indicate that the content owner is to be notified of the attempted dissemination.

Method And Apparatus For Providing Broadband Signals To A Portable User Device

US Patent:
8155583, Apr 10, 2012
Filed:
Oct 31, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/590081
Inventors:
Joseph A. Alfred - Somerset NJ, US
Joseph M. Sommer - Rutherford NJ, US
Assignee:
AT&T Intellectual Property II, L.P. - Atlanta GA
International Classification:
H04B 7/185
US Classification:
455 121, 370312, 455 306, 455101
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for providing broadband signals to a portable user device is disclosed. Broadband signals, such as satellite radio signals, are received at a base station having a plurality of antennas. The content of the broadband signals are then encoded using space time coding (STC), and the STC encoded broadband content is transmitted from the plurality of antennas via a first wireless network protocol. The STC encoded broadband content can be received at a portable user device having a plurality of antennas or at a wireless access point having a plurality of antennas, which then transmit the broadband signals via a second wireless network protocol.

System And Method For Performing Speech Recognition To Control Devices On A Network

US Patent:
8244543, Aug 14, 2012
Filed:
Aug 27, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/219655
Inventors:
Joseph A. Alfred - Somerset NJ, US
Joseph M. Sommer - Rutherford NJ, US
Assignee:
AT&T Intellectual Property I, L.P. - Atlanta GA
International Classification:
G10L 21/00
US Classification:
704275
Abstract:
A system, method and computer-readable medium for using speech recognition to control devices connected to a network. The system converts an utterance from a user for controlling a remote device in a network to a device specific control language associated with the remote device, to yield a remote device communication. Next, the system synthesizes a response from the remote device that is based at least in part on the remote device communication, to yield an audible response. The system then communicates the audible response to the user.
