Antenna For A Portable Information Device

US Patent:
6353414, Mar 5, 2002
Filed:
Jun 27, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/605320
Inventors:
Jeffrey L. Jones - Orem UT
Sy Prestwich - West Jordan UT
John M. Wheeler - Salt Lake City UT
David J. Moore - Riverton UT
Steven Lo Forte - Midvale UT
Brent D. Madsen - Providence UT
Kurt J. Stewart - Lehi UT
Assignee:
3Com Corporation - Rolling Meadows IL
International Classification:
H01Q 124
US Classification:
343702, 455 90
Abstract:
An apparatus and method of mounting an antenna in a portable information device (PID) are provided. The PID includes a housing having an elongated slot formed therein. A circuit board is disposed with the housing. An elongated antenna housing including a first end and a second end is received in the elongated slot. A conductive contact member is positioned within the elongated antenna housing, and an antenna member is positioned within the elongated antenna housing. The antenna member is electrically connected with the conductive contact member. A conductive connection clip is attached to the housing for providing an electrical connection between the conductive contact member and the circuit board. The conductive connection clip includes a first end portion and a second end portion. The second end portion of the conductive connection clip is operatively connected to the circuit board and the first end portion of the conductive connection clip contacts the conductive contact member positioned within the elongated antenna housing to allow signals to be transmitted from the antenna member to the circuit board and vice versa.

Antenna For Wireless Communication System

US Patent:
6509876, Jan 21, 2003
Filed:
Sep 8, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/657500
Inventors:
Jeffrey L. Jones - Orem UT
Kurt Stewart - Lehi UT
Rick D. Giles - Sandy UT
Robert Merrill - Bountiful UT
Assignee:
3Com Corporation - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
H01Q 124
US Classification:
343702, 343700 MS, 455 90, 361737
Abstract:
An antenna system for a communication card provides wireless or radio frequency (RF) communication with other networks or communication systems. The antenna system includes an antenna attached to a retractable platform that is selectably movable between an extended position and a retracted position. When wireless communication is desired, the retractable platform is located in the extended position and the antenna is substantially disposed outside of the body of the communications card. When wireless communication is not desired, the retractable platform and antenna are stored inside the body of the communications card in the retracted position. Desirably wireless communication is automatically available when the retractable platform is in the extended position, and wireless communication is automatically unavailable when the retractable platform is in the retracted position.

Wireless Communication Apparatus For Portable Electronic Devices

US Patent:
6807437, Oct 19, 2004
Filed:
Jan 31, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/775022
Inventors:
David C. Andrus - Provo UT
Matthew Scott Martin - Pleasant Grove UT
Kurt Stewart - Lehi UT
Assignee:
3com Corporation - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
H04B 138
US Classification:
4555757, 343702
Abstract:
An apparatus and system for providing wireless communication for a portable computer system. In one embodiment, the present invention is a wireless communication apparatus. The wireless communication apparatus is adapted to be communicatively coupled to a portable computer system. In the present embodiment, the apparatus is comprised of a PCB (printed circuit board). It is noted that the PCB of the present invention is separate from and in addition to the PCB of the portable computer system to which it is coupled. The apparatus is further comprised of an antenna, coupled to the PCB adapted to transceive a specific radio frequency band. The apparatus is further comprised of a passive radiator coupled to the PCB. The passive radiator is adapted to provide an omindirectional radiation pattern for the wireless communication apparatus.

Multiple Antenna Ports For Electronic Devices

US Patent:
6191743, Feb 20, 2001
Filed:
Apr 5, 2000
Appl. No.:
9/543037
Inventors:
Jeffrey L. Jones - Orem UT
Sy Prestwich - West Jordan UT
Steven LoForte - Midvale UT
Kurt Stewart - Lehi UT
David Moore - Riverton UT
John M. Wheeler - Salt Lake City UT
Assignee:
3Com Cororation - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
H01Q 124
US Classification:
343702
Abstract:
An apparatus for facilitating the various placement of an antenna within a wireless transceiver device such as a wireless personal data assistant is presented. Such an apparatus enables the relocation of an antenna device in accordance with a user preferred configuration. The relocation of the antenna device does not effect the overall performance and does not require further termination of unused antenna configurations. Such an apparatus facilitates the preferred placement of an antenna in accordance with a user's hand preference (e. g. , right handedness verses left handedness).

Stylus Antenna

US Patent:
6262684, Jul 17, 2001
Filed:
Jun 27, 2000
Appl. No.:
9/604713
Inventors:
Kurt Stewart - Lehi UT
Sy Prestwich - Riverton UT
Jeffrey L. Jones - Orem UT
Steven Lo Forte - Midvale UT
Assignee:
3Com Corporation - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
H01Q 124
US Classification:
343702
Abstract:
The present invention discloses antenna structures for portable digital devices that continuously receive radio signals in both the extended and the retracted antenna positions. In addition, the disclosed antenna structures tune the antenna based on the position of the antenna to achieve good impedance matching, which is particularly useful in reducing the noise and interference, while maximizing the available power for radiation from the portable digital devices. More specifically, a multiple position stylus antenna is disclosed that incorporates an antenna into a stylus for use with a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). The stylus antenna uses one radiating element tuned for optimal performance in the extended position and synthesizes a compensation impedance to match the impedance of the feeding transmission line in the retracted position.
