Low Bit Rate Compression Format Conversion For Improved Resolution

US Patent:
6573941, Jun 3, 2003
Filed:
Apr 22, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/127743
Inventors:
Donald Henry Willis - Indianapolis IN
Shu Lin - Indianapolis IN
Assignee:
Thomson Licensing SA - Boulgone Cedex
International Classification:
H04N 701
US Classification:
348448, 348446, 348459
Abstract:
A method for format conversion includes providing a first interlaced video signal including non-progressive video of a first resolution, downconverting fields of the first resolution to fields of a second resolution, and combining and interlacing the fields at a third resolution. The video signal is transmitted at the third resolution. The video signal of the third resolution is deinterlaced to form a progressive format video. The progressive format video is converted to the first non-progressive resolution by alternately adjusting position of the progressive format of the third resolution up and down to make upper and lower fields, respectively, of the first resolution for display.

User Selectable Variable Trick Mode Speed

US Patent:
6577809, Jun 10, 2003
Filed:
Aug 1, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/211803
Inventors:
Shu Lin - Indianapolis IN
Donald Henry Willis - Indianapolis IN
Assignee:
Thomson Licensing S.A. - Boulogne-Cedex
International Classification:
H04N 591
US Classification:
386 68, 386 82
Abstract:
Upon user selection of a particular trick mode, the number of pictures that are displayed can be accordingly adjusted to correspond with the selected trick mode speed based on a determined display time. Subsequently, the bandwidth usage can be can be determined to ensure that the channel capacity between a playback device ( ) and a remote decoder ( ) has not been exceeded. For forward trick modes, in a case where the bandwidth between the playback device ( ) and the remote decoder ( ) would be exceeded, B-pictures can be uniformly eliminated throughout the playback segment. Where B-pictures were present and they have been eliminated, they can be replaced by dummy B-pictures. Again, if there is still insufficient bandwidth available between the playback device ( ) and remote decoder ( ), then P-pictures can be eliminated from the playback segment and uniformly replaced by dummy P-pictures.

US Classification:
369 83, 386 52
Abstract:
A method and device for editing to a picture a group of pictures (GOP) in a DVD media without decoding and encoding of an MPEG encoded signal. The method includes the steps of: marking a user selected end picture to identify a selected segment of the encoded signal to be edited; automatically identifying an actual end picture for the selected segment based on a position of the user selected end picture relative to at least one other picture within the encoded signal; and performing an edit function on an actual segment delimited by the actual end picture.

Changing A Playback Speed For Video Presentation Recorded In A Modified Film Format

US Patent:
6707984, Mar 16, 2004
Filed:
Oct 31, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/001466
Inventors:
Shu Lin - Indianapolis IN
Jianlei James Xie - Carmel IN
Mark Alan Schultz - Carmel IN
Assignee:
Thomson Licensing S.A. - Boulogne
International Classification:
H04N 591
US Classification:
386 68, 386125, 386131
Abstract:
The invention includes a system and method for changing a playback speed of a selected video segment having repeat fields. To achieve fast motion play a selected video segment can be modified to delete repeat fields. Further pictures can be deleted as required to achieve a desired playback speed. To achieve slow motion play, a selected video segment can be modified by encoding repeat fields into conventional field pictures. Further pictures can be added as required to achieve a desired playback speed. Further, a repeat first field flag in the picture header of the picture containing the repeat field can be set to zero. Furthermore, a GOP structure of the modified video segment can be reencoded into a conventional or a desired GOP structure. Additionally, the modified video segment can be recorded exclusively on a desired portion of a storage medium.

Changing A Playback Speed For Video Presentation Recorded In A Non-Progressive Frame Structure Format

US Patent:
6714721, Mar 30, 2004
Filed:
Jun 18, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/883547
Inventors:
Shu Lin - Indianapolis IN
Jianlei James Xie - Carmel IN
Mark Alan Schultz - Carmel IN
Assignee:
Thomson Licensing - Boulogne
International Classification:
H04N 593
US Classification:
386 52, 386 68, 386110
Abstract:
The invention includes a system and method for changing a playback speed of a selected video segment having a non-progressive frame structure which has been recorded onto a portion of a storage medium. A selected video segment can be modified for a changed playback speed and the modified video segment can be recorded exclusively on the portion of the storage medium. A plurality of non-video packs in the selected video segment can be deleted to reduce the amount of data contained in the modified video segment. The video segment can be modified by decoding the frames in the video segment, reencoding such frames into their associated field pictures and adding at least one field picture. Alternatively, the video segment can be modified by removing at least one frame or field picture contained in the video segment. In either arrangement, the video segment can be reencoded to produce a smoother trick mode and playback performance.

Copy Feature For Recordable Dvd Editing

US Patent:
