The cell locations and power cells are sized and positioned so that each cell location may interchangeably accept either a regenerative power cell or a non-regenerative power cell.

Method For Optically Detecting An Electrical Arc In A Power Supply

US Patent:
7787113, Aug 31, 2010
Filed:
May 18, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/750628
Inventors:
Marc Aiello - Oakmont PA, US
Edward Alan Cheesman - Chicora PA, US
Xuan Zhang - Monroeville PA, US
Assignee:
Siemens Industry, Inc. - Alpharetta GA
International Classification:
G01N 21/00
US Classification:
3562371
Abstract:
A method for optically detecting an electrical arc in a power supply. The method includes capturing light with a light pipe, transmitting the captured light along at least a portion of a length of the light pipe, optically detecting the transmitted light with a photodetector which is optically coupled to the light pipe, generating a signal indicative of an intensity of the detected light, and determining whether the detected light is associated with an electrical arc.

Packaging Method For Modular Power Cells

US Patent:
7798892, Sep 21, 2010
Filed:
Aug 31, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/515294
Inventors:
Marc F. Aiello - Oakmont PA, US
Edward Alan Cheesman - Chicora PA, US
Wayne Sheldon Jordan - Cranberry Township PA, US
Assignee:
Siemens Industry, Inc. - Alpharetta GA
International Classification:
H05K 5/00
H05K 7/20
G06F 1/20
US Classification:
454184, 36167947, 361696
Abstract:
A method of operating a power delivery system that has at least one power cell includes directing air into the power cells to cool them, receiving the air from the cells, directing the air to a cooling system, and recirculating the cooled air to the power cells. Each cell may include an air intake, an air output, a water-cooled heat sink, and optionally a plurality of capacitor connectors and/or a circuit board. The air may be directed through the air intake to the air output so that air passes over the capacitor connectors and/or the circuit board before passing over the heat sink.

Abstract:
A power delivery system includes a group of removable power cells. Each power cell includes a water cooled heat sink, an air intake, and an air output. The system also includes a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger draws air from the cells, cools it, and recirculates the cooled air to the cells via each cell's air intake. The cell may be designed so that components that are not near the heat sink are cooled by air from the intake before that air reaches the heat sink.
