Inventors:
Lawrence J. Andrews - Cheswick PA, US
Mark S. Krampitz - Hunker PA, US
Gary M. Sich - Irwin PA, US
Assignee:
Wabtech Holding Corp. - Wilmerding PA
International Classification:
B60T 11/10
B23P 11/00
US Classification:
188153 R, 29428
Abstract:
The brake cylinder comprises a cylinder body comprising an annular flange and a non-pressure head. The annular flange of the cylinder body defines a plurality of openings. The non-pressure head has an annular flange and a head portion extending from the annular flange. The annular flange of the non-pressure head has a plurality of bosses and a plurality of openings corresponding to and aligned with the plurality of openings in the annular flange of the cylinder body. At least one vent is positioned in one of the plurality of bosses. The cylinder body and the non-pressure head are secured to each other at the respective flanges. The vent is positioned in the boss disposed opposite a mounting portion so that when the brake cylinder is mounted to a railway vehicle, the vent is oriented in a bottom position on the cylinder body with respect to a ground surface.

Short Travel Detector For Empty/Load Brake Control

US Patent:
6305756, Oct 23, 2001
Filed:
Aug 4, 2000
Appl. No.:
9/635038
Inventors:
Daniel G. Scott - Pittsburgh PA
Mark S. Krampitz - Hunker PA
Assignee:
Westinghouse Air Brake Company - Wilmerding PA
International Classification:
B60T 818
US Classification:
303 222
Abstract:
An empty/load brake control system mountable on a sprung and an unsprung member of a railway car and disposed between the car brake control valve and brake cylinder for adjusting the brake cylinder pressure during a brake application according to the car load condition. Such system includes an empty/load sensor valve device and a sensor arm coupled to a sensor cable whose movement is controlled by a sprung member and a terminal member disposed on an end of sensor cable, in contact with sprung member so that any downward movement of sprung member forces such terminal member in a similar downward direction and similarly pulls on the sensor cable. A piston, under pressure, urges the sensor arm to rotate and retract sensor cable but must overcome resistance of a spring. The system includes a load proportional valve.

Single-Cylinder, Truck-Mounted Brake Assembly

US Patent:
4793446, Dec 27, 1988
Filed:
Dec 10, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/939996
Inventors:
James E. Hart - Trafford PA
William K. Mong - North Huntingdon PA
Allen W. Kyllonen - Plum PA
Mark S. Krampitz - Hunker PA
Assignee:
American Standard Inc. - Wilmerding PA
International Classification:
B61H 1300
B61H 1334
US Classification:
188 52
Abstract:
A single-cylinder, truck-mounted brake assembly for a railway vehicle truck in which low-cost, lightweight, truss-type brake beams are employed, with one beam having the single brake cylinder mounted thereon. Force-transfer levers pivotally-mounted to the respective brake beams at the beam-midpoint are interconnected by force-transmitting members that pass through openings in the bolster to move the brake beams into brake shoe/wheel engagement when a brake application is made. The brake rigging is set up so that the transfer lever bail imparted to the force-transmitting members is split. With respect to the force-transfer lever connected to the one force-transmitting member (brake cylinder), this has the effect of the brake cylinder piston skewing equally on opposite sides of the cylinder centerline to prevent piston seal leakage. In addition, diagonally-opposed lever arms of the respective force-transfer levers are greater in length than the other lever arms to obtain brake force multiplication without unbalancing the brake shoe forces. A further advantage found by making the one transfer lever arm longer than the corresponding lever arm of the other transfer lever is to split the lateral swing of the other force-transmitting member (slack adjuster) equally on opposite sides of the centerline of the bolster opening to avoid interference therebetween.

Railroad Car Brake Cylinder Piston Travel Indicator And Mount Therefor

US Patent:
5492203, Feb 20, 1996
Filed:
Mar 10, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/402248
Inventors:
Mark S. Krampitz - Hunker PA
Assignee:
Westinghouse Air Brake Company - Wilmerding PA
International Classification:
F16D 6602
US Classification:
188 111
Abstract:
A visual brake cylinder piston travel indicator for a railroad car having a brake cylinder device located remotely from a convenient viewing area. An indicator rod is suitably sized and configured to extend from the remote brake cylinder device to the viewing area where the brake cylinder piston travel may be determined by the relationship of the indicator rod end with respect to a reference point. At the brake cylinder device, the indicator rod is connected to the piston hollow rod by a bearing assembly that includes the hollow rod collar. The bearing assembly provides for relative rotation between the indicator rod and hollow rod, while concurrently transmitting axial movement of the piston to the indicator rod, such relative rotation being necessitated by the fact that the piston and hollow rod typically rotate during reciprocal movement between a brake application and brake release position, due to torsional forces imparted by the piston return spring.

Handbrake For Single-Cylinder Truck-Mounted Railway Car Brake

US Patent:
5069312, Dec 3, 1991
Filed:
Oct 15, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/597121
Inventors:
Wajih Kanjo - Lockport IL
Mark S. Krampitz - Hunker PA
Michael J. Moriarity - Lansing IL
Assignee:
Westinghouse Air Brake Company - Wilmerding PA
International Classification:
B61H 1302
US Classification:
188 52
Abstract:
A handbrake system for use with a truck-mounted, single-cylinder brake rigging including truss-type brake beams, there being a single handbrake pivotal lever supported intermediate its ends by a twisted transfer link that is, in turn, fixed to the brake rigging transfer lever. A fulcrum end of the handbrake lever is free to engage the bearing surface of a thrust block mounted on the brake beam at the juncture of the beam tension and strut members in order to allow the point of engagement between the fulcrum end and the bearing surface to change with rotation of the handbrake lever. In addition, the fulcrum end of the handbrake lever is arranged with two, spaced-apart arcuate segments that successively engage the bearing surface of the thrust block during rotation of the handbrake lever to change its lever ratio and, accordingly, limit the degree of rotation of the handbrake lever.

Single-Cylinder Truck-Mounted Brake Assembly

US Patent:
4613016, Sep 23, 1986
Filed:
Aug 9, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/764047
Inventors:
James E. Hart - Trafford PA
William K. Mong - North Huntingdon PA
Allen W. Kyllonen - Plum Boro PA
Mark S. Krampitz - Hunker PA
Assignee:
American Standard Inc. - Wilmerding PA
International Classification:
B61H 1324
US Classification:
188 52
Abstract:
A single-cylinder, truck-mounted brake assembly for a railway car truck in which low-cost, light-weight, truss-type brake beams are employed, with one beam having an expansible brake actuator in the form of an air bag mounted thereon. The brake rigging arrangement employs an equalizing lever that is pivotally-connected to each brake beam at its centrally-located strut bar, and force-transmitting members between the respective ends of the equalizing levers, so that the force of the brake actuator is transferred from the brake beam strut bar to the brake shoes via the beam tension member. Accordingly, the light-weight, low-cost brake beams are not subjected to such bending forces as would otherwise require a stronger beam. The single-cylinder air bag arrangement is made possible by utilizing a slack adjuster device as the one force-transmitting member.

Low Stress Diaphragm
