Awards:
FAA Airport Safety Enhancement Award to Downtown Airport (with KCMO Downtown Airport and their staff)
Federal Aviation Administration
Downtown Airport received the prestigious FAA Airport Safety Enhancement Award this September KCFD will share in that award at the insistence of Mike Roper, Downtown Airport manager. This award means that the airport, for three consecutive years has had no discrepancies in any area including ARFF when inspected by the FAA and no violations. MKC has maintained this high standard during a period of near-constant construction on the airfield and while simultaneously resolving the large sinkhole at the north end. Very few airports ever get this award. MKC is getting its second (back to back) award. The award is not for heroics at any incident, but for day-in, day-out, solid professionalism and high degree of attention to safety. The involved personnel should be officially commended for their work and the ongoing way they have represented the KCFD. All of the credit for our portion of this success goes to Captain Marshall, Battalion Chief 102 and DSO, and most especially the crews of KCFD Pumpers 8, 9 and 25. Perhaps the most representative story I can use to try to properly describe their professionalism is that a pilot who experienced a recent in-flight emergency out in western Kansas aboard a very small aircraft chose to limp it in to Downtown Airport for a belly landing, bypassing several airports with staffed, onsite ARFF protection in order to come to MKC. When asked why he took the exceptional risk of flying further, he responded that he has seen our firefighters out on the airfield repeatedly, training and practicing. He stated that he selected Downtown Airport (the furthest option he had) because he felt that the KCFD-provided ARFF protection there offered him the best possibility of surviving such an event. He made an affirmative choice to place his life in their hands. That’s a pretty high recommendation. I am proud of the KCFD and MKC personnel who made this happen.
