Apparatus And Method For Determining Wind Profiles And For Predicting Clear Air Turbulence

US Patent:
6000285, Dec 14, 1999
Filed:
May 22, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/083484
Inventors:
Kenrick Rodford Leslie - Inglewood CA
Michael Lee Shand - Morristown NJ
Martin Carlin Baker - Budd Lake NJ
Joseph J. Barrett - Morris Plains NJ
Clint Patrick Kilroy - Parsippany NJ
Assignee:
Alliedsignal Inc. - Morristown NJ
International Classification:
G01F 100
G01C 2100
US Classification:
7317007
Abstract:
The invention provides a system for passive measurement of atmospheric temperature using a passive direction detector for detecting the energy of a narrow wavelength band emanating from a volume of atmospheric gas. The resulting signal can be associated with an effective temperature. The effective temperature can be associated with an effective range. The system generates a temperature map which can determine, at predetermined time intervals, atmospheric temperatures in an azimuth plane associated with a predefined range from the detector. The temperature map can then be used to calculate temperature gradients that in turn can be used to compute the vertical wind vector difference and to determine the presence of clear air turbulence.

High Range Resolution Active Imaging System Using A High Speed Shutter And A Light Pulse Having A Sharp Edge

US Patent:
5519209, May 21, 1996
Filed:
Jun 15, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/259943
Inventors:
William R. Rapoport - Bridgewater NJ
Martin C. Baker - Budd Lake NJ
Michael L. Shand - Morristown NJ
Joseph J. Barrett - Morris Plains NJ
Howard E. Aschoff - Wanaque NJ
Assignee:
AlliedSignal Inc. - Morris Township NJ
International Classification:
H01J 4014
US Classification:
250214VT
Abstract:
An active imaging system for viewing targets with a high degree of range resolution of approximately one foot. The imaging system utilizes a laser pulse which passes through an electro-optical pulse slicer which creates a sharp leading edge and/or a sharp falling edge on the laser pulse. The laser pulse travels to the target under observation, illuminates and reflects off of the target and returns to a camera. A target is viewed only during the time all or a portion of the returning laser pulse overlaps the time the camera shutter gate is open. The imaging system is particularly suited for determining depth information about a target by varying the time relationship when the returning laser pulse is received by the camera.

Optical Limiter

US Patent:
4723248, Feb 2, 1988
Filed:
Jun 11, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/743540
Inventors:
Donald J. Harter - Piscataway NJ
Michael L. Shand - Morristown NJ
Yehuda B. Band - Elizabeth NJ
Harold Samelson - Elizabeth NJ
Assignee:
Allied Corporation - Morris Township, Morris County NJ
International Classification:
H01S 310
US Classification:
372 25
Abstract:
An optical device that stabilizes the power in a cw laser beam comprises a material whose absorption coefficient increases wth increasing incident intensity. The same device acts as an energy limiter and pulse shortener for a pulsed laser. In either case, the device can be located either within the laser cavity or outside it. In another embodiment, the device is placed into the cavity of a passively mode-locked laser to permit mode-locking with laser materials that have high gain-saturation energy. Materials suitable for use in the device include Cr-doped crystalline solids and organic solutions, such as laser dyes, saturable absorber dyes, etc.
