Method And Apparatus For Assigning Color Management Actions Within A Computing System

US Patent:
6571009, May 27, 2003
Filed:
Jul 16, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/354233
Inventors:
Mary Nielsen - Eagle ID
Michael Stokes - Boise ID
Denise Zimmerman - Boise ID
Assignee:
Hewlett-Packard Development Company - Houston TX
International Classification:
G06K 900
US Classification:
382162, 358523
Abstract:
The method of the invention adaptively assigns an image data color management action to a component of a computing system. The computing system includes control programs such as an application program and a peripheral driver program. The computing system further includes a peripheral device that may have both software color management capability and hardware color management capability. The method of the invention initially examines received image data to determine at least one characteristic thereof. The method then compares the characteristic with one or more decision parameters that enable an assessment of the complexity of the color management actions required for the image data. Thereafter, based upon the result of the comparing action, the image data is subjected to a color management action by a selected one of the control programs or by the peripheral device, dependent upon the determined complexity of the image data.

Method And Data Arrangement For Encapsulating Signed Over-Ranged Color Image Data To Accommodate In-Range File Formats

US Patent:
6611273, Aug 26, 2003
Filed:
Feb 22, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/790930
Inventors:
Michael D. Stokes - Redmond WA
Gilman K. Wong - Redmond WA
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G09G 502
US Classification:
345590, 345591, 345549
Abstract:
A new method and data encapsulation arrangement are disclosed for over-ranging color image data. The resulting data storage format renders color image data sets encoded in the over-ranging format compatible with in-range color image systems. Thus, color images including over-ranging portions will be readable by legacy systems that handle only in-range color data. The new arrangement of the color image data storage comprises a file header segment describing contents of a color image file. The new arrangement also includes an image data segment comprising digital image data representing a set of color image elements encoded in a signed over-ranged color space. A multi-partitioned color image bitmap data segment is created. A first partition in the multi-partitioned bitmap data segment includes image data corresponding to a first color image data word portion associated with an in-range color space. A second partition in the multi-partitioned bitmap data segment includes image data corresponding to a second color image data word portion associated with an over-ranging color space.

System And Method For Performing A Recoloring Operation Sequence On Color Objects

US Patent:
6628828, Sep 30, 2003
Filed:
Apr 24, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/556214
Inventors:
Michael D. Stokes - Redmond WA
Adrian Secchia - Bellevue WA
Gilman K. Wong - Redmond WA
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06K 900
US Classification:
382167, 358518
Abstract:
A system and method for recoloring color objects selectively applies color processing operations in a particular pipelined sequence to offer improved performance and quality of color processing. The recoloring sequence includes a transformation by a 5Ã5 matrix that handles various types of transformations in the color space of the color object, a gamma correction, a bi-level thresholding operation, and a conversion into a color space, such as the CMYK space, for an output device. Each of these operations in the recoloring sequence may be selectively activated or deactivated depending on the attributes of the color object being processed and the desired recoloring effects. The transformation with the 5Ã5 matrix allows various transformation operations, such as rotation, scaling, translation, shearing, and perspective in the color space of the color object to be combined and performed in a single step, resulting in significantly improved processing efficiency.

System And Method For Converting Color Data

US Patent:

Filed:
Apr 24, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/556672
Inventors:
Michael D. Stokes - Redmond WA
Adrian Secchia - Bellevue WA
Gilman Wong - Redmond WA
Hock San Lee - Sammamish WA
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06K 934
US Classification:

Abstract:
A system and method converts input color data in different formats into a working color space. In the case that the input data includes a device color profile and the desired working color space is an RGB space, gamma information of the input data may be extracted from the color profile. In a Simplified extraction process, the gamma information may be extracted by combining one-dimensional LUTs in the profile in a gray-scale conversion to form a gamma table. When the color profile is a more complex profile, such as one of the regular ICC profile format, a full extraction process may be used, in which gamma information is derived from each of the front end, middle and back end portions of the profile. The derived gamma information may then be combined to provide a final gamma table.

Color Conversion Acceleration Using Lookup Tables

US Patent:
6690489, Feb 10, 2004
