Techniques For Automated Parameter Adjustment Using Ion Signal Intensity Feedback

US Patent:
2013005, Mar 7, 2013
Filed:
May 9, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/698336
Inventors:
Michael J. Tomany - North Grosvenordale CT, US
James P. Murphy - Franklin MA, US
Paul Rainville - Princeton MA, US
Assignee:
Waters Technologies Corporation - Milford MA
International Classification:
H01J 49/04
H01J 49/26
US Classification:
250282, 250288
Abstract:
Described are techniques for tuning parameters of a system. For one or more values of a distance, mass spectral analysis of a liquid analyte stream is performed. A corresponding ion signal intensity of a selected ion is obtained. The distance is measured from a first end of a first tube to a second end of a second tube which surrounds said first tube. Using a computing device, a current value of the distance is automatically adjusted in accordance with corresponding ion signal intensities obtained for the selected ion. Using a computing device, a desired value for the distance is automatically determined using the corresponding ion signal intensities. The desired value results in an ion signal intensity for the selected ion which is any of more than a threshold intensity and a maximum of ion signal intensities obtained by performing mass spectral analysis using different values for the distance.

Electrospray Emitter Assembly

US Patent:
2014004, Feb 20, 2014
Filed:
Mar 5, 2012
Appl. No.:
14/004240
Inventors:
Michael J. Tomany - North Grosvenordale CT, US
Paul Rainville - Princeton MA, US
James P. Murphy - Franklin MA, US
Assignee:
WATERS TECHNOLOGIES CORPORATION - Milford MA
International Classification:
G01N 30/72
B05B 5/025
US Classification:
73 6152, 239690, 295921
Abstract:
An electrospray emitter assembly () for an interface device () used to connect the output of a liquid chromatograph to the inlet of an electrospray ion source of a mass spectrometer (). The device () incorporates an electrospray emitter assembly () that includes an emitter needle (), a sheath () and a housing () with an attachment means in the form of a flange () for attachment to a mass spectrometer (). The sheath () is arranged to shield the electrospray emitter needle () when the assembly is not attached to a mass spectrometer (). The assembly () is operable to move the sheath () thereby to reveal, in use, the electrospray emitter needle () when the assembly () is attached to the mass spectrometer ().

Method For Determining B Vitamins And Their Vitamers

US Patent:
2022020, Jun 30, 2022
Filed:
Dec 29, 2021
Appl. No.:
17/564753
Inventors:
- Milford MA, US
Paul Rainville - Princeton MA, US
Assignee:
Waters Technologies Corporation - Milford MA
International Classification:
G01N 30/72
G01N 33/15
G01N 30/60
H01J 49/42
Abstract:
The present disclosure discusses a method of separating a sample (e.g., B vitamins and their vitamers) including coating a flow path of a chromatographic system; injecting the sample into the chromatographic system; flowing the sample through the chromatographic system; separating the sample; and analyzing the separated sample. In some examples, the coating applied to the surfaces defining the flow path is non-binding with respect to the sample—and the separated sample. Consequently, the sample does not bind to the low-binding surface of the coating (e.g., organosilica coating) of the flow path. The applied coating provides an inert barrier that is beneficial for B vitamin analysis, including improved peak shape (less tailing and narrower peak), high sensitivity, and no carry-over.

Differentiation Of Natural Vitamin E From Synthetic Vitamin E And Quantification Of Tocopherols By Supercritical Fluid Chromatography

US Patent:
2021033, Nov 4, 2021
Filed:
Apr 29, 2021
Appl. No.:
17/244451
Inventors:
- Milford MA, US
Paul Rainville - Princeton MA, US
Assignee:
Waters Technologies Corporation - Milford MA
International Classification:
B01D 15/38
B01D 15/40
Abstract:
The present disclosure provides methods for the separation and quantitation of enantiomers of vitamin E using supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) or carbon dioxide-based chromatography on chiral columns. The disclosed methods may be used to quantitatively determine the concentration of RRR-α-tocopherol in foods, food ingredients, dietary supplements, vitamin premixes, nutritional formulas, and medicines. Further provided is a method of differentiating the source of α-tocopherol as natural or synthetic.

Lc/Ms Adduct Mitigation By Vapor Deposition Coated Surfaces

US Patent:
2021023, Aug 5, 2021
Filed:
Jan 15, 2021
Appl. No.:
17/150802
Inventors:
- Milford MA, US
Paul Rainville - Princeton MA, US
Assignee:
Waters Technologies Corporation - Milford MA
International Classification:
G01N 30/72
C23C 14/04
C23C 14/12
Abstract:
The present disclosure discusses a method of separating a sample (e.g., small organic acid metabolite) including coating a flow path of a chromatographic system. The coating along the flow path is vapor deposited and prevents or severely decreases metal interactions between the metallic chromatographic system and the sample.

System And Method For Lipid Quantification

US Patent:
2020009, Mar 26, 2020
Filed:
Sep 19, 2019
Appl. No.:
16/575909
Inventors:
- Milford MA, US
Giorgis M. Isaac - Marlborough MA, US
Nyasha Clarence Munjoma - Sale, GB
Robert S. Plumb - Milford MA, US
Paul Rainville - Princeton MA, US
Assignee:
Waters Technologies Corporation - Milford MA
International Classification:
G01N 33/92
G01N 30/02
B01D 15/30
Abstract:
The present disclosure relates to methodologies, systems, and devices for screening lipids. The technique includes selecting a set of standards to identify at least one desired class of lipids, spiking the standards into a biological sample to form a sample matrix, extracting the lipids from the sample matrix, and introducing the sample matrix into a chromatography system to separate the desired class of lipids. Once the lipids are separated into different lipid classes using HILIC chromatography, they are directed to a detector, and the separated lipids are quantified based on a comparison between the measured detector response and a calibration curve generated with a known concentration of the selected set of standards.

Abstract:
A method is provided for authenticating a botanical. The method includes identifying at least one marker compound of the botanical. A sample comprising the botanical is injected into a chromatography system that includes a mobile phase delivery module, an autosampler, a chromatography column, a chromatography column manager, and at least one detector. The method also includes extracting a chromatogram of the at least one marker compound and extracting a spectrum at a chromatographic peak retention time of the at least one marker compound. The method also includes quantifying at least one peak of the extracted chromatogram and quantifying at least one band of the extracted spectrum. The quantified at least one peak of the extracted chromatogram and the quantified at least one band of the extracted spectrum are compared to a set of authentication criteria to determine authenticity of the botanical.
