Method And Apparatus For Automatic Construction Of Faceted Terminological Feedback For Document Retrieval

US Patent:
6519586, Feb 11, 2003
Filed:
Aug 6, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/370639
Inventors:
Peter Anick - Marlboro MA
Suresh Tipirneni - Waltham MA
Assignee:
Compaq Computer Corporation - Maynard MA
International Classification:
G06F 1730
US Classification:
707 3, 707 4, 707 5, 704 9
Abstract:
Iterative information retrieval from a large database of textual or text-containing documents is facilitated by automatic construction of faceted representations. Facets are chosen heuristically based on lexical dispersion, a measure of the number of different words with which a particular search expression co-occurs within a given type of lexical construct (e. g. , a noun phrase) appearing in the document set. Words having high dispersion rates represent âfacetsâ that may be used to organize the documents conceptually in accordance with the search expression, effectively providing a concise, structured summary of the contents of a result set as well as presenting a set of candidate terms for query reformulation.

Search Engine For Selecting Targeted Messages

US Patent:
6778975, Aug 17, 2004
Filed:
Mar 5, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/799863
Inventors:
Peter Anick - Marlboro MA
Farzin Maghoul - Hayward CA
Johannes L. Marais - Mountain View CA
Laurent Chavet - San Mateo CA
Assignee:
Overture Services, Inc. - Pasadena CA
International Classification:
G06F 1730
US Classification:
707 1, 707 2, 707102
Abstract:
A search engine receives query terms from a client. In response, the search engine executes a search on a web directory to identify zero or more documents that match the query terms. The identified documents are associated with one or more categories. The search engine probabilistically selects one of the categories associated with the identified documents. Each message in a message database is also associated with one or more of the categories. The search engine accesses the message database and selects at least one message associated with the selected category. The search engine returns a web page containing references to the documents matching the query terms and the one or more messages selected from the message database to the client.

Systems And Methods For Interactive Search Query Refinement

US Patent:
6947930, Sep 20, 2005
Filed:
Apr 25, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/424180
Inventors:
Peter G. Anick - Marlboro MA, US
Alastair Gourlay - Boulder Creek CA, US
John Thrall - Fremont CA, US
Assignee:
Overture Services, Inc. - Pasadena CA
International Classification:
G06F017/30
US Classification:
707 5, 707100, 707102, 715513
Abstract:
A received query is processed so as to generate an initial group of ranked documents corresponding to the received query. Each document in all or a portion of the documents in the initial group of ranked documents is associated with a respective set of ranked candidate terms such that each candidate term in the respective set of ranked candidate terms is embedded within the document. Each respective set of ranked candidate terms is identified at a time prior to the processing of the received query. In accordance with a selection function, a subset of the candidate terms in one or more of the respective sets of candidate terms is selected. In response to the received query, the initial group of ranked documents and the subset of candidate terms are presented.

Speculative Search Result Based On A Not-Yet-Submitted Search Query

Appl. No.:
11/212044
Inventors:
Stephen Hood - Redwood City CA, US
Ralph Rabbat - Palo Alto CA, US
Mihir Shah - San Francisco CA, US
Adam Durfee - Mountain View CA, US
Alastair Gourlay - Boulder Creek CA, US
Peter Anick - Marlborough MA, US
Richard Kasperski - Creston, CA
Oliver Thomas Bayley - Pacifica CA, US
Ashley Woodman Hall - Menlo Park CA, US
Shyam Kapur - Sunnyvale CA, US
John Thrall - San Francisco CA, US
Assignee:
Yahoo! Inc. - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
G06F 17/30
G06F 17/00
US Classification:
707 3, 707 5, 707 7, 707100
Abstract:
Providing a speculative search result for a search query prior to completion of the search query. In response to receiving a search query from a client node, a speculative search result is provided to the client node for the search query prior to receiving an indication from the client node that said search query is completely formed. The speculative search result may be displayed on the same web page on the client node as the search query, while the search query is being entered by the user. As the user further enters the search query, a new speculative search result may be provided to the user.

Topic-Focused Search Result Summaries

US Patent:
7921092, Apr 5, 2011
Filed:
Dec 4, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/633762
Inventors:
Peter Anick - Marlborough MA, US
Swati Raju - San Jose CA, US
Daniel E. Rose - Cupertino CA, US
Assignee:
Yahoo! Inc. - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
G06F 7/00
US Classification:
707705, 707769
Abstract:
Techniques for automatically generating and displaying topic-focused summaries for search results are disclosed. Users can “peek” inside a search result to see document excerpts that pertain specifically to a user-selected topic. Thus, a user can view the aspects of a document that are most interesting prior to deciding whether to retrieve the complete document. For each search result, a user can select from among several different available summaries, each of which focuses on a different topic of the document to which that search result refers. According to one aspect, key concepts are automatically identified in a document. For each such key concept, contextual snippets that pertain to that key concept are automatically selected. The key concepts are displayed to the user at search time. A summary that contains the contextual snippets that pertain to a user-selected key concept is displayed in response to the user's selection of that key concept.

Filed:
May 31, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/755851
Inventors:
Liang-Yu Chi - San Francisco CA, US
Swati Raju - San Jose CA, US
Ashley Hall - Menlo Park CA, US

Abstract:
The present invention relates to providing vector terms for use in formulating search requests in response to a user query. The method according to one embodiment comprises receiving a search query from a client and identifying links to one or more content items corresponding to the search query. One or more term vectors are then generated corresponding to the content items and one or more vector terms are selected from the term vectors. The links to the one or more content items and selected vector terms are combined to form a final result page.
