Medical Device With Orientable Tip For Robotically Directed Laser Cutting And Biomaterial Application

US Patent:
2009017, Jul 2, 2009
Filed:
Dec 27, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/964945
Inventors:
Raymond A. BONNEAU - San Francisco CA, US
Assignee:
Intuitive Surgical, Inc. - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
A61B 18/18
A61B 19/00
US Classification:
606 15, 606130
Abstract:
A medical device used in a medical robotic system has a conduit and an orientable tip. An optical fiber coupled to a laser source and/or a catheter coupled to one or more biomaterial sources extends through the conduit and tip so that the tip of the medical device may be robotically directed towards a target tissue for laser and/or biomaterial application as part of a medical procedure performed at a surgical site within a patient. A protective sheath covers the fiber as it extends through the conduit and tip. A first coupler adjustably secures at least the sheath to the medical device and a second coupler adjustably secures the fiber to at least the sheath. A similar dual coupler mechanism may be used to secure the sheathed catheter to the medical device.

Apparatus, Systems, And Methods For Removing Obstructions In The Urinary Tract

US Patent:
2013016, Jun 27, 2013
Filed:
Dec 14, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/716001
Inventors:
The Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Jr. University - Palo Alto CA, US
Raymond Bonneau - San Francisco CA, US
Mary K. Garrett - Redwood City CA, US
Dan E. Azagury - Geneve, CH
Assignee:
The Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Jr. University - Palo Alto CA
International Classification:
A61B 17/22
US Classification:
606127
Abstract:
Systems and methods are provided for removing an obstruction from a ureter using a catheter including a distal end sized for introduction into a ureter, an infusion lumen, and an aspiration lumen. An infusion tip is provided on the distal end that includes infusion ports communicating with the infusion lumen, and one or more aspiration ports communicating with the aspiration lumen. One or more sources of fluid and/or vacuum are connectable to the tubular member such that fluid is delivered into the infusion lumen and suction is delivered into the aspiration lumen. A controller is coupled to the source(s) to control delivery of fluid to generate a radially outward pressure against a wall of a ureter adjacent the infusion tip and to control suction through the aspiration port(s) to apply a suction force against a kidney stone located adjacent the infusion tip.

Devices And Methods For Preventing Tracheal Aspiration

US Patent:
2014000, Jan 2, 2014
Filed:
Dec 13, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/714124
Inventors:
Mary K. GARRETT - Redwood City CA, US
David GAL - San Francisco CA, US
Raymond BONNEAU - San Francisco CA, US
Assignee:
THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE LELAND STANFORD JUNIOR UNIVERSITY - Stanford CA
International Classification:
A61M 16/04
US Classification:
12820715
Abstract:
Devices and methods for preventing tracheal aspiration as described where a cuff assembly having an inflatable member with an inflation tube fluidly coupled may be placed over a proximal end of an endotracheal tube or laryngeal mask and inserted into the patient trachea with the endotracheal tube or separately after the endotracheal tube has already been positioned. In either case, the inflatable member may be positioned distal (or inferior) to the vocal cords and proximal to the endotracheal balloon via a delivery instrument which automatically positions the balloon in proximity to the vocal cords.

Phantom Degrees Of Freedom For Manipulating The Movement Of Surgical Systems

US Patent:
2014005, Feb 20, 2014
Filed:
Aug 14, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/966437
Inventors:
Samuel Kwok Wai Au - Mountain View CA, US
Raymond A. Bonneau - San Francisco CA, US
Nicola Diolaiti - Menlo Park CA, US
Arjang M. Hourtash - Santa Clara CA, US
Amy E. Kerdok - San Jose CA, US
Michael Turner - Sunnyvale CA, US
Assignee:
Intuitive Surgical Operations, Inc. - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
A61B 19/00
US Classification:
606130
Abstract:
Methods, apparatus, and systems for performing minimally invasive surgery through an aperture of a patient. In accordance with a method, parameters are received from an input device associated with a surgeon, the parameters indicating a desired state of an end effector of a surgical instrument oriented through the aperture. The surgical instrument is included in a mechanical assembly having a first set of joints. Instructions are then computed for controlling the mechanical assembly using the received parameters by computing instructions for controlling a second set joints, the second set of joints including the first set of joints and an additional joint, the additional joint being absent from the mechanical assembly. The mechanical assembly is then driven so as to move the end effector toward the desired state based on the computed instructions.

Phantom Degrees Of Freedom In Joint Estimation And Control

US Patent:
2014005, Feb 20, 2014
Filed:
Aug 14, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/966494
Inventors:
Raymond A. Bonneau - San Francisco CA, US
Nicola Diolaiti - Menlo Park CA, US
Pushkar Hingwe - Los Altos CA, US
Arjang M. Hourtash - Santa Clara CA, US
Amy E. Kerdok - San Jose CA, US
Michael Turner - Sunnyvale CA, US
Assignee:
Intuitive Surgical Operations, Inc. - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
A61B 19/00
US Classification:
606130
Abstract:
Methods, apparatus, and systems for operating a surgical system. In accordance with a method, a position of a surgical instrument is measured, the surgical instrument being included in a mechanical assembly having a plurality of joints and a first number of degrees of freedom, the position of the surgical instrument being measured for each of a second number of degrees of freedom of the surgical instrument. The method further includes estimating a position of each of the joints, where estimating the position of each joint includes applying the position measurements to at least one kinematic model of the mechanical assembly, the kinematic model having a third number of degrees of freedom greater than the first number of degrees of freedom. The method further includes controlling the mechanical assembly based on the estimated position of the joints.

Phantom Degrees Of Freedom For Manipulating The Movement Of Mechanical Bodies

US Patent:
2014005, Feb 20, 2014
Filed:
Aug 14, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/966406
Inventors:
Samuel Kwok Wai Au - Mountain View CA, US
Raymond A. Bonneau - San Francisco CA, US
Nicola Diolaiti - Menlo Park CA, US
Pushkar Hingwe - Los Altos CA, US
Amy E. Kerdok - San Jose CA, US

Assignee:
Intuitive Surgical Operations, Inc. - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
B25J 9/16
US Classification:
700263, 700245, 901 2
Abstract:
Methods, apparatus, and systems for controlling the movement of a mechanical body. In accordance with a method, desired movement information is received that identifies a desired motion of a mechanical body, the mechanical body having a first number of degrees of freedom. A plurality of instructions are then generated by applying the received desired movement information to a kinematic model, the kinematic model having a second number of degrees of freedom greater than the first number of degrees of freedom, each of the instructions being configured to control a corresponding one of the second number of degrees of freedom. A subset of the plurality of instructions are then transmitted for use in controlling the first number of degrees of freedom of the mechanical body.
