Analysis System

US Patent:
5521698, May 28, 1996
Filed:
Jan 23, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/377127
Inventors:
Charles E. Carroll - Kingston NH
Garry C. Kunselman - Stow MA
Arthur E. Tobey - Salem NH
Richard J. Belmore - East Bridgewater MA
Assignee:
Thermo Jarrell Ash Corporation - Franklin MA
International Classification:
G01N 2100
G01N 2167
US Classification:
356 70
Abstract:
An analytical system for analyzing a liquid sample that includes structure defining an analysis region with an inlet and an outlet, a spectrometer system disposed in sensing relation to the analysis region, structure defining a sample inlet port, and structure connecting the sample inlet port to the inlet of the analysis region. The analysis region includes sample excitation apparatus with a pair of spaced metal electrodes, one of the electrodes having an upper surface in spaced juxtaposition to the other electrode and passage structure connected to the inlet of the analysis region, and the other electrode having a lower surface of annular configuration in spaced juxtaposition to the upper surface of the one electrode. The one metal electrode is disposed with the passage structure extending to an outlet port in its upper surface, and that electrode includes structure in the upper surface defining a plurality of channels extending away from the outlet port for discharge of excess quantities of a liquid sample to be analyzed that has been flowed through the passage structure. Control structure flows a sample to be analyzed from the sample inlet port through the analysis region, and output structure responsive to the spectrometer system provides output data as a function of the liquid sample flowed into the sample excitation apparatus.

Sample Analysis Apparatus

US Patent:
4804519, Feb 14, 1989
Filed:
Mar 6, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/022769
Inventors:
Mario A. Sainz - Londonderry NH
Richard C. Anderson - Boston MA
Richard J. Belmore - East Bridgewater MA
Stanley B. Smith - Westford MA
Assignee:
Thermo Jarrell Ash Corporation - Waltham MA
International Classification:
G01N 2173
G01J 342
US Classification:
422 81
Abstract:
An analysis system includes a sample inlet, a diluent inlet, and a mixing chamber that has an outlet through which a mixture of the sample and diluent is flowed and in which a mechanical mixing member is housed. Positive displacement pumps preferably concurrently flow diluent to the mixing chamber and draw diluted sample to be analyzed from the mixing chamber. Bubble separation apparatus has a first branch connected to a drain and a second branch connected to the analyzer input. In a particular embodiment, the analyzer apparatus includes a nebulizer that controls the flow rate of the bubble-free stream through the second branch, sample excitation apparatus in the form of an induction coupled plasma (ICP) torch for exciting the sample to spectroemissive levels, and means for spectroanalysis of the excited sample at the output of the torch.

Rotatable Refrigerated Valve

US Patent:
4117694, Oct 3, 1978
Filed:
Feb 9, 1977
Appl. No.:
5/767158
Inventors:
Richard J. Belmore - Randolph MA
International Classification:
B01D 500
US Classification:
62 555
Abstract:
A ball valve for use in a vacuum pumping system has the passage through the valve element provided with a series of metal plates disposed for contact by gas passing through the valve when open. A refrigerant conduit entering the passage through the neck of the valve element by which it is turned between open and closed positions includes a U-shaped portion within the passage with which the plates are in thermal contact and the conduit then exits through the neck. The valve casing has sealed clean-out ports through which the passage is accessible when the valve is closed thus permitting the thus established cold trap to be serviced without losing vacuum in the chamber being exhausted, the valve monitored, and the passage rough-pumped.

Spectroanalytical System

US Patent:
5141314, Aug 25, 1992
Filed:
Mar 1, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/662924
Inventors:
Richard J. Belmore - Bridgewater MA
John A. Bernier - Lexington MA
Assignee:
Thermo Jarrell Ash Corporation - Waltham MA
International Classification:
G01J 3443
G01N 2167
US Classification:
356313
Abstract:
A spectroanalytical system with radiation dispersing apparatus having structure for dispersing radiation into a spectrum for concurrent application to a plurality of exit ports; a plurality of radiation sensor channel circuits, each circuit being optically coupled to a corresponding exit port for monitoring radiation at that exit port; sample excitation apparatus for exciting sample material to be analyzed to spectroemissive levels for generating a beam of radiation for dispersion by the dispersion structure; and controller structure for triggering the excitation apparatus to excite the sample material and for generating a gating interval by the channel circuitry for accumulating radiation data during an interval that commences subsequent to application of maximum energy to the sample by the excitation apparatus.
