Ink Jet Transparency With Improved Wetting Properties

US Patent:
4775594, Oct 4, 1988
Filed:
Jun 20, 1986
Appl. No.:
6/876682
Inventors:
Robert C. Desjarlais - Hadley MA
Assignee:
James River Graphics, Inc. - South Hadley MA
International Classification:
B32B 2708
B32B 2736
US Classification:
428421
Abstract:
An ink jet transparency is provided which exhibits improved wetting properties, thereby resulting in an even surface distribution of ink on the transparency. The ink jet transparency comprises a substantially transparent resinous support, e. g. , a polyester film, and a substantially clear coating thereon which includes a non-volatile organic acid. Glycolic acid, citric acid, malonic acid, tartaric acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, malic acid and succinic acid are among the preferred non-volatile organic acids employable in the present invention. The presence of the organic acid results in greatly improved wetting of ink jet ink in solid block areas, preventing the ink from coalescing onto itself. Undesired voids and pin holes in those areas where the ink has been applied are therefore avoided.

Fast Coupling Lemon-Yellow Phenolic Couplers

US Patent:
4642383, Feb 10, 1987
Filed:
Sep 30, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/428457
Inventors:
Robert C. Desjarlais - South Hadley MA
Assignee:
James River Graphics, Inc. - South Hadley MA
International Classification:
C07C14800
US Classification:
568 48
Abstract:
Substituted 2,2'-dihydroxydiphenyl sulfide, sulfoxide, and sulfone compounds, and their use as azo coupling components in light-sensitive diazo compositions. The novel compounds couple with rapidly developing diazonium compounds to provide lemon-yellow dyes, and can be used in combination with blue and violet couplers to provide a green-black diazo image in higher density areas with a neutral black in lower density areas.

Diazo Compositions And Diazotype Materials Prepared From Same

US Patent:
3976491, Aug 24, 1976
Filed:
Nov 26, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/527409
Inventors:
Robert C. Desjarlais - South Hadley MA
Assignee:
Scott Paper Company - Philadelphia PA
International Classification:
G03C 158
US Classification:
96 91R
Abstract:
Light-sensitive diazo compositions which comprise a resorcinol substituted in the 2-position with an alkyl group and in the 4-position with an aralkyl group as the yellow azo coupling component, and diazotype materials prepared therefrom.

Negative-Working Diazo Type Photoreproduction Having Improved Ph Control

US Patent:
4307170, Dec 22, 1981
Filed:
Jun 18, 1980
Appl. No.:
6/160649
Inventors:
Robert C. Desjarlais - South Hadley MA
Assignee:
James River Graphics, Inc. - South Hadley MA
International Classification:
G03C 152
US Classification:
430147
Abstract:
Negative-working diazography formulation is comprised of (i) at least one hexafluorophosphate diazonium salt adapted to photolytically cleave into an acid catalyst, (ii) at least one acid labile enolic, preferably arylenolic blocked-coupler adapted to be converted in the presence of acid to an active azo-coupling component, and (iii) an effective amount of an additive, such as p-toluenesulfonyl benzamide, capable of controlling the pH of films prepared from said formulation when subjected to a clearing step as defined herein.

Ink Jet Printable Coatings

US Patent:
4732786, Mar 22, 1988

6/809870
Inventors:
Robert Patterson - Neenah WI
David H. Hollenberg - Neenah WI
Robert C. Desjarlais - South Hadley MA
George E. Alderfer - Neenah WI
Assignee:
James River Corporation - Richmond VA
International Classification:
B41M 500
US Classification:
427261
Abstract:
A coated ink jet printing substrate where said coating utilizes an insolubilized hydrophilic polymer.

High Speed Diazonium Salts Useful In Diazo Type Photoreproduction

US Patent:
4590263, May 20, 1986
Filed:
Sep 30, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/428455
Inventors:
Robert C. Desjarlais - South Hadley MA
Everett W. Bennett - Longmeadow MA
Assignee:
James River Graphics, Inc. - South Hadley MA
International Classification:
C07C11300
C07C11304
G03C 152
G03C 518
US Classification:
534558
Abstract:
Novel diazonium salts which possess excellent photo speed, good thermal stability, exceptional resistance to discoloration in the D. sub. min areas, rapid development, and allow a wide range of azo dye colors are provided. The diazonium salts are of the following formula: ##STR1## wherein R. sub. 1 is tertiary butyl or tertiary amyl; Y is hydrogen, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, cyanoalkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, aralkoxy, aralkylthio, arylthio, alkylthio, halogen, allyl, allyloxy, allylthio, cyanoalkoxy, hydroxyalkoxy, methoxyalkoxy, trifluoroalkyl, alkylacetylamino, morpholino, or dialkyl carbonamido; R. sub. 2 and R. sub. 3 are the same or different, and are alkyl, aralkyl, allyl, cyanoalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, hydrogen, acyl, cycloalkyl, beta-chloroalkyl, branched alkyl, or a structure wherein R. sub. 2 and R. sub. 3 may be linked together to form a heterocyclic structure; and X is an anion. The desirable properties are provided at least in part by utilizing a tertiary butyl or tertiary amyl substituted phenoxy group metal to the diazonium group.

Negative-Working Diazo Type Photoreproduction Having Improved D-Min And Line Acuity

US Patent:
4307171, Dec 22, 1981
Filed:
Jun 18, 1980
Appl. No.:
6/160650
Inventors:
Robert C. Desjarlais - South Hadley MA
Assignee:
James River Graphics, Inc. - South Hadley MA
International Classification:
G03C 158
G03C 160
G03C 518
US Classification:
430147
Abstract:
Negative-working diazography material is comprised of (i) at least one hexafluorophosphate diazonium salt adapted to photolytically cleave into an acid catalyst, (ii) at least one acid labile enolic, preferably arylenolic blocked-coupler adapted to be converted in the presence of acid to an active azo-coupling component, and (iii) an effective amount of at least one additive such as benzotriazole, urea, thiourea and derivatives thereof. The additives are believed to react with the acid released during imaging to the extent that migration thereof into the areas which have not been exposed to light is reduced or eliminated. The reduction in the migration of the liberated acid improves the D-min and line acuity of the image obtained from the formulation and the presence of the additive provides a means for decreasing the photo speed of the formulation.
