Self-Retracting Tool

US Patent:
4043229, Aug 23, 1977
Filed:
Apr 5, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/673642
Inventors:
Robert M. Ortlieb - Southfield MI
Assignee:
DeVlieg Machine Company - Royal Oak MI
International Classification:
B23B 2100
US Classification:
82 24A
Abstract:
There is disclosed a self-retracting tool holder assembly for mounting a tool on a machine in a predetermined location with respect to a workpiece, the assembly incorporating a tool holder mounted for pivotal movement about an axis so arranged that when the tool is fed by the machine into engagement with the workpiece the forces created by such engagement will cause the tool holder to pivot about said axis to advance the tool into a seated machining position in which the machining portion of the tool is displaced into the workpiece both in the feed direction and in a direction at right angles thereto, and spring means to automatically retract the tool to an inactive position out of engagement with the workpiece when the feed of the tool stops, whereby when the tool is returned by the machine the tool will not cause a drag line to be formed on the just-machined surface of the workpiece.

Machine Tool And Method

US Patent:
4250775, Feb 17, 1981
Filed:
Aug 24, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/069583
Inventors:
Richard A. Jerue - Bloomfield Hills MI
Robert M. Ortlieb - Southfield MI
Assignee:
DeVlieg Machine Company - Royal Oak MI
International Classification:
B23B 300
B23B 4100
US Classification:
82 1C
Abstract:
The present invention relates generally to numerically controlled contour machining, and particularly to an apparatus and method for performing such operations on a "bar-type" horizontal boring mill using the spindle bar to vary the cutting radius of the rotating cutting tool and the machine table to feed the workpiece toward the cutting tool.

System For Automatic Fine Adjustment Of Tools

US Patent:
4473937, Oct 2, 1984
Filed:
Sep 7, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/415662
Inventors:
Robert M. Ortlieb - Southfield MI
Assignee:
De Vlieg Machine Company - Royal Oak MI
International Classification:
B23Q 3157
US Classification:
29568
Abstract:
A novel machining center having a plurality of tools, including adjustable tools incorporating an externally accessible rotatable socket for fine-adjusting the tool bit thereon; a tool drive for actuating each tool; a storage device for storing a plurality of tools, at least one of which is one of the adjustable tools, the storage device being operable to move the tools between first and second positions; an automatic tool changer for transporting a tool in both directions between said first position and the tool drive; a powered wrench engagable with said socket on an adjustable tool disposed in said second position; a numerical controller for controlling the operations of said machining center; and a technique for inputing to the control means information as to the identity of a given adjustable tool requiring adjustment and the amount of adjustment desired, said powered wrench being actuatable to engage said socket of said given adjustable tool in response to said information when the given tool is in said second position. A novel method of handling tools is also disclosed.

Precision Adjustable Cutting Tool

US Patent:
4516889, May 14, 1985
Filed:
Sep 7, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/415663
Inventors:
Robert M. Ortlieb - Southfield MI
Assignee:
DeVlieg Machine Company - Royal Oak MI
International Classification:
B23B 2902
US Classification:
408152
Abstract:
A tool is disclosed that offers precision fine adjustment of a cutting tool bit on the tool, having an opening provided with a conical seat, an internally-threaded tool adjustment cartridge having a conical surface engageable with the conical seat, an externally-threaded tool ajustment member threadably engaged within the cartridge, a tensioning mechanism for maintaining the conical surface in self-centering engagement with the conical seat, external gear teeth on the cartridge, and a worm wheel engageable with the external gear teeth of the cartridge to provide for very small movements of the cartridge. Fine adjustment can be performed automatically or manually, and may be performed by access to either axial end of the tool, or to the side thereof adjacent the tool bit.

Presettable Tool Supporting Device

US Patent:
4206665, Jun 10, 1980
Filed:
Oct 15, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/732936
Inventors:
Horst Schurfeld - Bielefeld, DE
Wolfgang Peters - Bielefeld, DE
Robert M. Ortlieb - Southfield MI
Assignee:
DeVlieg Machine Company - Royal Oak MI
International Classification:
B23B 2900
US Classification:
82 36R
Abstract:
There is disclosed a presettable tool supporting device for machine tools which permits the tool to be preset in its tool holder away from the machine and then quickly and easily mounted on the machine in an accurately predetermined position, thus eliminating the need for adjusting the tool on the machine. The disclosed tool supporting device generally comprises a tool holder having means for affixing a tool thereto, a base member having attaching means for semi-permanently attaching the base member to a machine tool, locating means preferably in the form of complementary corrugated surfaces engageable with one another when the tool holder is placed in engagement with the base member to locate each with the other along two major axes while permitting relative movement between the two along a third major axis, stop means for locating the tool holder with respect to the base member in a predetermined position along the third axis, and releasable locking means for detachably locking the tool holder to the base member in said predetermined position. Several embodiments are disclosed, including one in which the locking means is accessible from the side and another in which access is from the top, and a further one in which locating and locking is accomplished on a second set of axes in addition to the first set. Alternative stop means and locking means are also disclosed.
