Power Outage Operation Of A Cable Modem

US Patent:
8156372, Apr 10, 2012
Filed:
Jan 9, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/351452
Inventors:
Lisa Voigt Denney - Suwanee GA, US
Roger W. Fish - Superior CO, US
Margo Dolas - Atlanta GA, US
Assignee:
Broadcom Corporation - Irvine CA
International Classification:
G06F 11/00
US Classification:
714 14
Abstract:
A method, system and computer program product for operation of a cable modem in response to Alternating Current (AC) power outage is described herein. When a loss of AC power is detected, the cable modem is switched to battery backup mode of operation using a single upstream and a single downstream channel. This switch occurs prior to receiving instructions from a cable modem termination system to use a single upstream and a single downstream channel. The cable modem notifies the cable modem termination system of the switch to battery backup mode of operation.

Linear Distortion And Interference Estimation Using Decision Feedback Equalizer Coefficients

US Patent:
2012023, Sep 13, 2012
Filed:
Feb 28, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/406777
Inventors:
Bruce J. Currivan - Los Altos CA, US
Thomas J. Kolze - Phoenix AZ, US
Roger Fish - Superior CO, US
Victor T. Hou - La Jolla CA, US
Assignee:
BROADCOM CORPORATION - IRVINE CA
International Classification:
H04L 27/01
US Classification:
375232, 375233
Abstract:
Linear distortion and interference estimation using decision feedback equalizer coefficients. Processing of different respective groups of equalizer coefficients may be made to determine the residual frequency response of an equalizer and/or device in which the equalizer is implemented. Such an equalizer may be in woman within any of a number of respective communication devices including those operative within satellite, wireless, wired, fiber-optic, and/or mobile communication systems. A first group of equalizer coefficients corresponds to certain filtering characteristics of the equalizer and/or device in which the equalizer is implemented. The equalizer is implemented to process a signal to generate a second group of equalizer coefficients. Processing and/or analysis of the first group of equalizer coefficients and the second group of equalizer coefficients will generate a third group of equalizer coefficients corresponding to the residual frequency response of the equalizer and/or device in which the equalizer is implemented.

Narrowband Ingress Estimation And Characterization Using Equalizer Taps

US Patent:
2012023, Sep 13, 2012
Filed:
Feb 28, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/406877
Inventors:
Bruce J. Currivan - Los Altos CA, US
Thomas J. Kolze - Phoenix AZ, US
Roger Fish - Superior CO, US
Victor T. Hou - La Jolla CA, US
Assignee:
BROADCOM CORPORATION - IRVINE CA
International Classification:
H04L 27/01
US Classification:
375233
Abstract:
Narrowband ingress estimation and characterization using equalizer taps. A equalizer including a feed forward equalizer (FFE) and a decision feedback equalizer (DFE) is implemented to process an input signal thereby generating an output signal. Analysis of the frequency response of the equalizer including the FFE and the DFE of the equalizer allows for the determination of whether or not narrowband ingress exists within the signal received by the equalizer. For example, analysis of the signal output from the equalizer provides for determination of the overall frequency response of the equalizer. In addition, analysis of the respective equalizer coefficients within one or both of the FFE and the DFE of the equalizer may be used to determine the overall frequency response of the equalizer. Narrowband ingress may be identified when the combination of the FFE (having a notch therein) and the DFE provides for an overall flat frequency response.

Spectrum Analysis Capability In Network And/Or System Communication Devices

US Patent:
2013028, Oct 31, 2013
Filed:
Jun 28, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/931626
Inventors:
Roger Fish - Superior CO, US
Harold Raymond Whitehead - Suwanee GA, US
Thomas J. Kolze - Phoenix AZ, US
International Classification:
H04L 12/26
US Classification:
370242
Abstract:
Spectrum analysis (SA) capability is included in various communication devices within a communication network. One or more of the devices use the SA information from other devices in the system to determine status of various communication links were devices in the system. One or more processors within one or more devices can identify any actual/existing or expected failure or degradation of the various components within the system. Such components may include communication devices, communication channels or links, interfaces, interconnections, etc. When an actual/existing or expected failure or degradation is identified, the affected components may be serviced or devices within the system may operate to mitigate any reduction in performance caused by such problems. Such SA functionality/capability may be implemented in one communication device or in a distributed manner across a number of devices in a communication system.

Trigger Synchronized Event For Channel Characterization Within Communication Systems

US Patent:
2015009, Apr 2, 2015
Filed:
Sep 30, 2014
Appl. No.:
14/502096
Inventors:
- IRVINE CA, US
Roger Wayne Fish - Superior CO, US
Lisa Voigt Denney - Suwanee GA, US
Niki Roberta Pantelias - Duluth GA, US
Assignee:
BROADCOM CORPORATION - IRVINE CA
International Classification:
H04B 17/00
H04L 27/26
H04B 3/46
H04W 24/08
H04J 11/00
US Classification:
370252
Abstract:
A new protocol uses a trigger message to identify one or more symbols transmitted between a first and a second communication device. The first device generates and transmits a trigger message to the second device. This process may be initiated based on the first device receiving a measurement initiation message from another device (e.g., such as the second device or another device within the system). Then, the first device transmits a signal that includes those one or more symbols to the second device. Before or during transmission, the first device generates a first capture of those one or more symbols. After receipt of the transmission from the first device, the second device performs a second capture of those one or more symbols identified within the trigger message. Then, any device having the first and second captures can determine a characterization of the communication pathway between the first and second devices.
