Integrated Fin-Heat Pipe

US Patent:
5803159, Sep 8, 1998
Filed:
May 23, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/862678
Inventors:
Roswell W. Nourse - Huntsville AL
Richard A. Reynolds - Guntersville AL
Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Army - Washington DC
International Classification:
F28F 2700
US Classification:
165 41
Abstract:
To remove excess heat from the fin of a flying object that is driven by a opulsion means, heat pipe principle is integrated into the structure of the fin. The heat from hot exhaust gases that flow over the evaporator section of the fin is absorbed by a working fluid within the fin, such as water, which then vaporizes. The resulting vapors flow to the condenser section of the fin where it releases the heat to the ambient air that flows over the condenser section. As heat escapes into the ambient air, the vapors condense, becoming a liquid again. The liquid travels back to the evaporator section where the heat absorption/vaporization process is repeated.

Rocket Accuracy Improvement Device

US Patent:
6761330, Jul 13, 2004
Filed:
May 19, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/457695
Inventors:
David A. Bittle - Decatur AL
Donald E. Davis - Huntsville AL
Robert C. Glover - Huntsville AL
Roswell W. Nourse - Huntsville AL
Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Army - Washington DC
International Classification:
F42B 1000
US Classification:
244 323
Abstract:
Rocket Accuracy Improvement Device, when coupled between the warhead and motor of a typical free flight rocket, isolates the warhead from the rocket motor in the axis using a plurality of ball bearings and thereby enables the warhead to spin independently of the motor. The separation of the warhead from the motor allows the angular momentum of the warhead, which has reached its maximum spin rate by the time the motor burns out, to act gyroscopically to maintain the trajectory of the rocket even when the motor reverses its spin, thus achieving a much more predictable flight path for the rocket.
