David John Tupman - San Francisco CA, US
Assignee:
Apple Inc. - Cupertino CA
International Classification:
H02J 7/00
US Classification:
320132
Abstract:
A gas gauge circuit has a power supply pin, a power return pin, power-on reset capability, and a communications signal pin. A reset control circuit is coupled between the power supply pin and the communications signal pin, or between the power return pin and the communications signal pin. Protection Circuitry For Reversible Connectors

US Patent:
8542472, Sep 24, 2013
Filed:
Jul 26, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/191275
Inventors:
Scott Mullins - Morgan Hill CA, US
Assignee:
Apple Inc. - Cupertino CA
International Classification:
H02H 3/20
US Classification:
361 86, 361 911
Abstract:
An electronic device may include a connector port that accommodates reversible connector plugs. The connector port may include protection circuitry that protects other components in the electronic device from undesired power supply voltages. The protection circuitry may form a first branch and a second branch opposite to the first branch. The protection circuitry may receive control signals from power polarity detection circuitry. The power polarity detection circuitry may detect the presence of power supply voltages at the first branch and the second branch. In response to detecting the presence of a power supply voltage at a given branch, the power polarity detection circuitry may disable a power supply signal path through the opposite branch and enable a power supply signal path through the given branch.

Shielding Structures For Wireless Electronic Devices With Displays

US Patent:
8583187, Nov 12, 2013
Filed:
Oct 6, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/899509
Inventors:
Moon Kim - Palo Alto CA, US
Abbas Jamshidi Roudbari - Sunnyvale CA, US
Qishan Yu - San Diego CA, US
Wei Yao - Palo Alto CA, US
Scott Mullins - San Jose CA, US
Assignee:
Apple Inc. - Cupertino CA
International Classification:
H04M 1/00
US Classification:
455566, 4555751, 36167901
Abstract:
Electronic devices such as computers and handheld devices are provided. The electronic devices may have electrical components such as displays that are driven by driver circuitry. During operation, the driver circuitry may generate radio-frequency noise. Communications circuitry in the electronic devices may be shielded from the radio-frequency noise by radio-frequency shielding structures. The shielding structures may be mounted on portions of the display module, on a cover glass layer, or on other structures such as housing structures. The radio-frequency shielding structures may be formed from one or more metal segments. The metal segments may run along edges of the display. A device housing may have a ground formed from a conductive peripheral member that runs around peripheral edges of the housing and a conductive plate that is connected to the conductive peripheral member. The radio-frequency shielding structure may be connected to the ground using conductive structures.

Battery Gas Gauge Reset Mechanism

US Patent:
2012027, Nov 1, 2012
Filed:
Jul 9, 2012

Electronic Device With Multimode Fingerprint Reader

US Patent:
2013007, Mar 28, 2013
Filed:
Sep 22, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/240370
Inventors:
Scott Mullins - Morgan Hill CA, US
International Classification:
G06F 7/04
US Classification:
340 583
Abstract:
An electronic device may operate a fingerprint reader in a stationary finger mode in which the fingerprint reader captures a fingerprint from a user's finger while the user's finger is in a stationary position and may operate the fingerprint reader in a moving finger mode in which the fingerprint reader captures a fingerprint from the user's finger while the user is swiping the finger across the fingerprint reader. The electronic device may use the moving finger mode when performing sensitive operations such as operations related to financial transactions. The electronic device may include near field communications circuitry. When activity is detected using the near field communications circuitry, the fingerprint reader may be operated in the moving finger mode. The fingerprint sensor may be activated when a proximity sensor detects the presence of a finger. Different actions may be taken by the device in response to detection of different fingerprints.

During test mode operations, a tester may be coupled to the device connector using the reversible connector. The tester may generate voltages, resistances, time-varying signals, or other input that directs the device to configure switching circuitry to support testing. Monitoring circuitry in the device may be used to detect input from the tester. In response to detected input from the tester, the switching circuitry may be adjusted to couple the controller to the device connector.

Techniques For Configuring Contacts Of A Connector

US Patent:
2013011, May 9, 2013
Filed:
Dec 20, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/721522
Inventors:
Apple Inc. - Cupertino CA, US
Scott Mullins - Gilroy CA, US
Alexei Kosut - Mountain View CA, US
Jahan Minoo - San Jose CA, US
Assignee:
Apple Inc. - Cupertino CA
International Classification:
H01R 13/66
G01R 31/08
US Classification:
43962021, 324538
Abstract:
Systems and methods for configuring contacts of a first connector includes detecting mating of a second connector with the first connector and in response to the detection, sending a command over one of the contacts and waiting for a response to the command. If a valid response to the command is received, the system determines the orientation of the second connector. The response also includes configuration information for contacts in the second connector. The system then configures some of the other contacts of the first connector based on the determined orientation and configuration information of the contacts of the second connector.
