Sending A File As A Link And/Or As An Attachment

US Patent:
6687741, Feb 3, 2004
Filed:
May 24, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/577651
Inventors:
Alan Ramaley - Seattle WA
Suresh Tharamal - Redmond WA
Sean E. McAteer - Seattle WA
Thomas W. Olsen - Issaquah WA
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 1516
US Classification:
709206
Abstract:
A desktop application program provides a single entry point for indicating that a file is to be sent to a recipient. In response to an indication that the file is to be sent, a determination is automatically made as to whether the file should be sent as a link, as an attachment, or as both a link and an attachment. If the file has not been saved to a disk location or if the file has not been saved to a shared disk location, the file is sent as an attachment to an e-mail note. If the file has been saved to a shared disk location, the file is sent to the recipient as a link in an e-mail note. In order to determine if the file saved to the shared disk location should also be sent as an attachment, a registry is checked for a send preference regarding shared files. If a send preference indicates that shared files are to be sent as attachments, the file is sent as both a link and an attachment. If a send preference indicates that shared files are not to be sent as attachment, the file is sent only as a link.

The edited electronic document is then sent back to the author having at least a first property. The application program executed by the author detects the properties and in response to the first property, retrieves the original electronic document from the memory and automatically prompts the author to merge the edited electronic document into the electronic document.

Edit Command Delegation Program For Editing Electronic Files

US Patent:
7107275, Sep 12, 2006
Filed:
Aug 21, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/225573
Inventors:
Andrew K. Quinn - Seattle WA, US
Mandira Virmani - Redmond WA, US
William Kennedy - Issaquah WA, US
Marc A. Olson - Seattle WA, US
Sean E. McAteer - Seattle WA, US

Abstract:
An edit command delegation (ECD) utility that provides a user with the ability to edit an electronic file in a creator application program while the electronic file is open in a separate viewing application program operable only for viewing the electronic file. In response to a user input to edit the electronic file, the ECD utility opens the electronic file and reads an application identification tag contained within the content of the electronic file. The application identification tag identifies a creator application program, which was used to create the electronic file and is operable for editing the content data of the electronic file. Once the ECD utility reads the application identification tag, the ECD launches the creator application program. The ECD utility then causes the creator application program to open the electronic file. Once the electronic file is open, the content data is displayed in a window controlled by the creator application program to allow the user to edit the content data.
