Abstract:
A shielded surgical scalpel includes an elongate handle defining a longitudinal axis and having a proximal portion and a distal portion. A blade is fixedly attached to the handle. A shield is mounted onto the handle. The shield is movable between a distal position where the shield prevents inadvertent access to the blade and a proximal position where the shield exposes the blade for use.

Valved Intradermal Delivery Device And Method Of Intradermally Delivering A Substance To A Patient

US Patent:
7047070, May 16, 2006
Filed:
Apr 2, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/112756
Inventors:
Bradley M. Wilkinson - North Haledon NJ, US
Charles G. Hwang - Ridgewood NJ, US
Assignee:
Becton, Dickinson and Company - Franklin Lakes NJ
International Classification:
A61N 1/30
A61B 17/20
A61B 5/00
US Classification:
604 20, 604 46, 600573
Abstract:
An intradermal delivery device for delivery a substance into the skin of a patient has a fluid chamber for containing the substance, at least one micro skin penetrating member, and a valve controlling the flow of the substance from the fluid chamber to the micro skin penetrating member. An adhesive releasably attaches the device to the skin of the patient, the fluid chamber can be sized to hold a unit dose of the substance, and, in some embodiments, the fluid chamber can be releasably coupled to a housing of the device.

Hinged Needle Shield Assembly Having Needle Cannula Lock

US Patent:
7220249, May 22, 2007
Filed:
May 29, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/479811
Inventors:
Charles G Hwang - Ridgewood NJ, US
C. Mark Newby - Tuxedo NY, US
Assignee:
Becton, Dickinson and Company - Franklin Lakes NJ
International Classification:
A61M 5/00
US Classification:
604263
Abstract:
A needle shield assembly and method of manufacturing a needle shield are provided. The needle shield assembly includes a needle hub having a needle cannula extending therefrom. A needle shield base is pivotably coupled to the needle hub. A locking assembly including a needle engagement member is coupled to the needle shield base. One or both of the needle shield base and the locking assembly include a cavity for receiving the needle cannula. The needle shield is manufactured by providing a needle shield base and a separate locking assembly including a needle engagement member, and connecting the locking assembly to the distal end portion of the needle shield base.

Needle Shield Assembly Having Hinged Needle Shield And Flexible Cannula Lock

US Patent:
7537581, May 26, 2009
Filed:
Dec 12, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/609441
Inventors:
Charles G. Hwang - Ridgewood NJ, US
Assignee:
Becton, Dickinson and Company - Franklin Lakes NJ
International Classification:
A61M 5/00
A61M 5/32
US Classification:
604110, 604192, 604263
Abstract:
A needle shield and needle shield assembly are provided for preventing accidental needle sticks. The needle shield includes opposing sidewalls and is pivotable between an open position that allows use of the needle cannula and a closed position that covers at least the tip of the needle cannula. A locking member extends from one of the sidewalls of the needle shield and includes a relatively rigid base portion and a relatively flexible end portion. The needle cannula engages the relatively flexible end portion when entering the needle shield cavity, deflecting it with respect to the base portion. Upon any attempt to move the needle shield from the closed position to the open position, the needle cannula is directed by the locking member towards the relatively rigid base portion, thereby making it very difficult to reuse the needle cannula.

Blood Collection Device

US Patent:
7578805, Aug 25, 2009
Filed:
May 14, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/437510
Inventors:
Charles G. Hwang - Ridgewood NJ, US
Assignee:
Becton, Dickinson and Company - Franklin Lakes NJ
International Classification:
A61M 5/32
US Classification:
604192
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a shieldable needle device. The shieldable needle device includes a housing, a needle cannula, a tip guard and an elongated flexibly resilient drive mechanism. The housing includes a longitudinal slot that extends along a wall of the housing. The drive mechanism is bent within the housing and includes a first end which extends through the longitudinal slot and a second end which is anchored to the tip guard. Upon movement of the first end along the longitudinal slot, the second end extends and moves the tip guard from a retracted position to an extended position thereby protectively surrounding a tip of the needle cannula.

Luer Connector Assembly

US Patent:
7776018, Aug 17, 2010
Filed:
Oct 19, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/875178
Inventors:
Gene Fleischer - New City NY, US
Charles G. Hwang - Ridgewood NJ, US
C. Mark Newby - Tuxedo NJ, US
Assignee:
Becton, Dickinson and Company - Franklin Lakes NJ
International Classification:
A61M 5/31
A61M 25/18
F16L 19/00
US Classification:
604243, 604240, 604535, 285345
Abstract:
A luer connector assembly is provided for enhancing the frictional engagement between medical devices such as syringes and needle assemblies. The assembly needle includes a female luer fitting having a passageway and a relatively soft, resilient member bounding the passageway. The passageway is also bounded by the body of the fitting, which is harder than the soft, resilient member. A male luer fitting inserted into the passageway engages both the soft, resilient member and the body of the female luer fitting. A method of manufacturing such a connector assembly is further provided. A first material is injected into a mold to form the body of a female luer fitting, the fitting including a passageway and a recess extending into the body. A second material is then injected such that it extends into the recess and bounds the passageway. The second material, when cool, is softer than the first material.
