Portable Arc-Seeded Microwave Plasma Torch

US Patent:
7091441, Aug 15, 2006
Filed:
Mar 19, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/804601
Inventors:
Spencer P. Kuo - River Edge NJ, US
Assignee:
Polytechnic University - Brooklyn NY
International Classification:
B23K 10/00
US Classification:
21912136, 21912159
Abstract:
Arc plasma torch generated by a torch module installed on the bottom wall in the narrow section of a tapered S-band rectangular cavity, is used to seed microwave discharge where the microwave electric field is maximum. This tapered cavity is designed to support TEmode. With seeding, only low Q cavity and moderate microwave power (time average power of 700 W) are needed. The microwave-enhanced discharge increases the size, cycle energy, and duty cycle of the seeding arc-torch plasma considerably. This torch can be run stably without introducing gas flow or run just using airflow. Adding airflow can increase not only the size of the torch plasma but also its cycle energy, which may reach a plateau of about 12 J/per cycle for the airflow rate exceeding 0. 393 l/s. This microwave plasma torch may have a radius of about 1. 25 cm or more, a height of about 5 cm, and a peak electron density exceeding 5×10cm.

Plasma Torch Implemented Air Purifier

US Patent:
7621985, Nov 24, 2009
Filed:
May 24, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/126869
Inventors:
Spencer P. Kuo - River Edge NJ, US
Assignee:
Adventix Technologies Inc. - River Edge NJ
International Classification:
B03C 3/019
US Classification:
96 55, 95 70, 95 73, 96 63, 96223, 96225, 21912149, 21912151, 21912152, 422 22, 422121
Abstract:
An air purifier to improve air quality for breathing is disclosed. A magnetized torch module that passes a large air flow is designed. The emission spectroscopy of the torch indicates that the plasma effluent carries an abundance of reactive atomic oxygen (RAO), which can effectively kill all kinds of microbes. The invention employs two torch modules which run alternately to generate non-thermal plasma for air treatment via both thermal/non-thermal processes. The air flow through the on-torch module is mainly treated thermally. A controlling air valve is designed to direct the exiting airflow of the off-torch module to pass through the plasma torch of the on-torch module for non-thermal treatment. The controlling air valve also works to turn the torch modules on and off synchronizing with the closing and opening of the two air valves in the controlling air valve. This device purifies ambient air in a fast rate and kills microbes thoroughly.

Portable Plasma Sterilizer

US Patent:
7777151, Aug 17, 2010
Filed:
Feb 14, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/030982
Inventors:
Spencer P Kuo - River Edge NJ, US
Assignee:
Adventix Technologies Inc. - River Edge NJ
International Classification:
B23K 10/00
US Classification:
21912147, 21912148, 21912152, 219 75
Abstract:
A handheld air plasma spray is designed. Plasma is generated by a magnetized arc torch running at 60 Hz and is in non-equilibrium state; thus, the plasma effluent has relatively low temperature (touchable) and yet contains high energy electrons (>5 eV) capable to dissociate oxygen molecules to atomic oxygen. The emission spectroscopy of the torch indicates that the plasma effluent carries an abundance of atomic oxygen, which can effectively kill all kind microbes. Moreover, the experimental results show that this plasma can rapidly clot blood. This invention is for sterilization and blood coagulation applications.

Plasma Assisted Oxygen Decontaminant Generator And Sprayer

US Patent:
8115135, Feb 14, 2012
Filed:
Feb 14, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/030962
Inventors:
Spencer P Kuo - River Edge NJ, US
Assignee:
Adventix Technologies Inc. - River Edge NJ
International Classification:
B23K 10/00
US Classification:
21912148, 21912152, 21912159
Abstract:
An atomic oxygen generator/sprayer is invented. An array of three magnetized torches running at 60 Hz is used to generate non-thermal plasma; thus, the plasma effluent has relatively low temperature (touchable) and yet contains high energy electrons (>5 eV) capable to dissociate oxygen molecules to atomic oxygen. The emission spectroscopy of the torch indicates that the plasma effluent carries an abundance of reactive atomic oxygen (RAO), which can effectively kill all kind microbes. A cap holding three pairs of rectangular permanent magnets is used to spread torches laterally into fan shape, which extends to a width exceeding 100 mm. The flux of RAO exceeds 2×10cmsec; its flow speed exceeds 20 m/s and it reaches out more than 20 mm. This invention is suitable for applications such as sterilizing carpets, clothes, and bed sheets.

Methods And Apparatus For Generating A Plasma Torch

US Patent:
6329628, Dec 11, 2001
Filed:
Dec 10, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/458618
Inventors:
Spencer P. Kuo - River Edge NJ
Edward Koretzky - Rancho Palos Verdes CA
Lester Orlick - Wantagh NY
Assignee:
Polytechnic University - Brooklyn NY
International Classification:
B23K 900
US Classification:
21912154
Abstract:
A modular system for constructing an atmospheric pressure plasma source. A plasma torch module may be constructed by reassembling the structural components of two (2) different models of spark plugs. Each module can produce a plasma torch having a radius of about 1 cm or more, a height of about 6 cm, and a peak density exceeding 10. sup. 13 cm. sup. -3. A set of modules, each connected in series, may be used with a ballasting capacitor such that an array can be operated while sharing a common power supply to produce a plasma having a relatively large volume and a relatively high density. A system having a number of plasma torch modules may be used in applications for absorbing radiation, reducing air drag and igniting fuel.

Battery Powered Handheld Air Plasma Spray

US Patent:
2014018, Jun 26, 2014
Filed:
Oct 15, 2013
Appl. No.:
14/053619
Inventors:
Spencer P. Kuo - River Edge NJ, US
International Classification:
A61B 18/04
US Classification:
606 40, 606 49
Abstract:
A battery powered handheld air plasma spray was designed, developed and successfully demonstrated. The power supply includes a battery, a dc HID ballast and a series LC matching circuit. This matching circuit is designed to maintain the performance of the HID ballast while driving arc discharges, which are rotated around the electrodes by the magnetic field of a ring magnet. The produced plasma is in a non-equilibrium state; thus, the plasma effluent is low temperature (touchable) and yet carries abundant reactive atomic oxygen, which can rapidly activate blood coagulation processes and can effectively kill numerous microbes. This invention is for blood coagulation and sterilization applications. The device may be installed in vehicles and carried and operated in open fields without AC power sources. It may be used for bleeding control in a serious mishap to treat wounds without having to move the injured.
