Symbol Position Monitoring For Pixelated Heads-Up Display Method And Apparatus

US Patent:
7212175, May 1, 2007
Filed:
Sep 19, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/666473
Inventors:
Patrick L. Magee - Portland OR, US
Richard S. Arlint - Yacolt WA, US
Thomas E. Hodel - Sherwood OR, US
David L. Wallac - West Linn OR, US
Assignee:
Rockwell Collins, Inc. - Cedar Rapids IA
International Classification:
G09G 5/00
G08B 21/00
US Classification:
345 7, 340945, 345690
Abstract:
An information processing system is disclosed. The information processing system includes a first processor that receives input data and creates a pixel data stream provided over a first channel and a second channel. The first channel provides a signal to affect the output of a pixelated display. The second channel includes location information and symbol information. The information processing system also includes a second processor coupled to the first processor. The second processor receives the location information and the symbol information from the first processor. The second processor receives the input data. The second processor computes a derived version of the inputs based on the location information and the symbol information.

Combiner Alignment Detector For Head Up Display System

US Patent:
4775218, Oct 4, 1988
Filed:
Apr 17, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/039513
Inventors:
Robert B. Wood - Hillsboro OR
Mark A. Thomas - Lake Oswego OR
Thomas E. Hodel - Beaverton OR
Robert E. Stockwell - Beaverton OR
Assignee:
Flight Dynamics, Inc. - Portland OR
International Classification:
G02B 2714
H01Q 128
H04N 718
H04N 572
US Classification:
350174
Abstract:
A head up display system includes a combiner alignment detector (24) that determines whether the combiner (22) and a cathode-ray tube (CRT) (18) are aligned within a preassigned operational tolerance. The CRT emits display symbology that reflects off the combiner toward an observer. The combiner is secured to a combiner bracket (38) which is pivotally mounted to a mounting structure (70) having a stationary relationship with the CRT. A light emitting diode (LED) (86) and a light-sensitive linear position detector (88) are secured to the mounting structure. Light rays emanating from the LED are reflected by a mirror (34), which is secured to the combiner bracket, and strike the position detector. Pivotal motion of the combiner bracket relative to the mounting structure results in movement of the mirror relative to the LED and the position detector. The pivotal motion of the mirror causes light reflected by the mirror to strike varying locations on the position detector, which provides corresponding output signals.
